Happy Veterans Day

From Blackfive.com and the Warrior Legacy Foundation:

Re: Happy Veterans Day

Thanks for both posts, Steve. The story of the Racoon shows just how desperate we were to defeat the U-boat and Nazi threat.

As to the warrior ballad I'm reminded of an interview with a squadron commander in Iraq. Somebody asked him about "proportionality." He replied "My idea of proportionality is all my guys come back and NONE of their do." Got it.

Re: Happy Veterans Day

One of my AF drill instructors (Sgt Capps) wore a combat infantryman's badge and was quite clear about why he left the Army. He explained that with vitually no exceptions, in the AF you always get to sleep on a bed between clean sheets! :)

I also ran into a chaplain at OTS who wore gold wings. Well, AF devices are never gold, always silver. Come to find out he'd been a Navy dive bomber pilot in WWII. Yeah, I guess diving on the Yamato would give you religion, all right.

Amen to that!

Now, I want you to remember that no bastard ever won a war by dying for his country. He won it by making the other poor dumb bastard die for his country.

Re: Happy Veterans Day

This morning's column by Toronto Sun co-founder and Korean War veteran Peter Worthington made me chuckle:

I know that we of the Princess Pats felt the equal -- if not the superior -- of other units. We were only really comfortable when our flanks were protected by other Canadians, or Commonwealth units. The only foreign units we trusted were the U.S. Marines and 1st ROK Division. We weren't impressed with most U.S. soldiers.

A favourite memory is that behind our front lines was the U.S. 2nd Division. Driving to Seoul, you'd pass their units, all of which seemed to boast the motto "Second to None." On leaving their area was a small Canadian postal unit in a stucco hut that displayed the sign: "We are None."

No disrespect to the U.S. Army, but just flat out funny! :D
