SNC should be in the final 4 if they;
1 .Get off to a fast start (score first)
2. Stay out of the penatly box
3. Get 30 shots on goal and limit GUS to 20 or less shots
4. Good special teams and tough defence (limit odd man rushes)
5. Great popcorn
All of these = SNC 4 GUS 3
Swartout has better stats this season than Lopes had last season.I would agree the NCHA overall wasn't as strong as last season. As far as how that relates to this game, you speak of taking advantage of mistakes but SNC doesn't make a ton of them and they don't give up a lot of opportunities or shots period.
Everyone expected the Gusties to be good this year. I know the Gusties have a ton of guys back as seniors, but one key guy who helped them get to Lake Placid last year that isn't back is the tender. Stout was in Lake Placid last season as well, had a ton of guys back but lost their goalie. This season didn't end with a trip to Lake Placid. Two years ago SNC graduated only two guys who played regularly from their National Championship team, one being their goalie, and they didn't get back to Lake Placid. When this is all said and done, I think this will be your difference.
The list of games SNC loses in their building isn't very long. While I think Gustavus is a very good team and I expect nothing less than their best and a terrific game, I'm confident this game won't go on that short list. We'll see how Pulak's line looks against the Gusties' top line.
SNC team defense has been a very effective tool in taking away time, speed and space. SNC knows what it takes to make turnovers, mistakes, etc. and cash in on them. I would suggest coach Cogs and the group will have a nice game plan for the Gusties speed. My prediction SNC 4-2! Go Green Knights!![]()
Swartout has better stats this season than Lopes had last season.
When I was at Umass-Dartmouth, after they made the NCAA's my first year there, everyone said they would fold and be 'just another team' the following year after their starting goalie went DI. I'd seen their backup (Jeff Green) play while the starter was hurt (Burek is the second half, I'm not looking up how to spell the first half of his last name...), and knew he was pretty solid as well.
But everyone told me I was wrong and the only reason they were any good was because of Burek. The next year they went 25-2-1 before losing to middlebury in what was their closest game of the playoffs before losing to oswego. link
What does that have to do about this game? Well, not much directly. But last year Gustavus finished with 10 or 11 losses and didn't reach 20 wins. Discounting their chances because they lost their goalie (who didn't even start the whole year for them) is short-sighted at best, especially since you're not even considering the goalie they have this year could be as good if not better.
This time of year, I don't really come into games with expectations. It could be a blowout, it could be a 2-1 nailbiter, it could be a track meet like that 7-5 game last year. One thing I do expect is that SNC is that both teams will play hard, and SNC is very tough to crack at home. We'll see how it all turns out tomorrow.
Cards and stnick... C'mon, are you guys serious? This thread asks "who will represent the West", right? This is the FAN forum right? How would you prefer I present my opinion?
schtick, with respect, maybe you should go back to last years posts around this time and read how others have posted and I think you'll agree... its all in the spirit of competition.
If we cannot speculate here, then HOW ABOUT we throw out the entire thousand post "definitive tournament speculation thread" as well.
No matter who wins I will be cheering for the West at Lake Placid. My money is on SNC for the same reasons stnicx, MW4Bucky&SNC, Toe Blake's Brother, Hammer and westscout pointed out.

To be fair, most of the voters in the poll haven't seen *either* team play this year.So CV998, you are right that this a speculation thread. While my comment was a bit hasty, what I was hoping to convey was that speculation can come as a reasoned view back up with stats and experience without what seemed to me just plain "we are better than you talk". If someone just keeps shouting "we are better", how can I have a civil debate and speculate with or against you. I will admit I am a SNC supporter, and I will admit that on paper these two teams seem virtually identical. I have not seen GA play this year, but I have to reason that since SNC is continually being ranked above GA in the NCAA Uscho Poll supposedly by persons who understand hockey better than me, and the fact the SNC is on home turf that SNC has the edge to win this game. I think the game will be fast paced and will call on both teams to bring their best. Anything can happen in a game like this, but I see it going to SNC.
Then what good is the poll? If the poll sets rankings, and playing against ranked teams helps your stats to get better position in the NCAA, how can the poll be honest especially when so much weight is given to it? Is the polling just political and nothing more? Sorry to ask what might seem like a really dumb question. Just don't quite see the whole picture.![]()
Agreed -- Beware the Pulak Longley, Ryd lineThe list of games SNC loses in their building isn't very long. While I think Gustavus is a very good team and I expect nothing less than their best and a terrific game, I'm confident this game won't go on that short list. We'll see how Pulak's line looks against the Gusties' top line.
Cards Rule, late last night, burp! you said burp! "let them figure it out on the ice" burp!, today you're picking SNC... what's up with that?
I would agree with this statement, but only because any team that does these things (and it's possible even without the great popcorn) has a VERY high chance of winning any game.
Now, what I have seen of SNC in the stats and in the webstreams shows me that the Knights do these things on a relatively consistent basis, much moreso than the Gusties. SNC will very likely win, IMO.
