Gun Control 1: Kiss Kiss, Bang Bang

Follow up:

A gunman killed 10 people at a ballroom dance studio amid Lunar New Year celebrations and then may have tried — but failed — to target a second dance hall, authorities said Sunday. An urgent search was underway across the Los Angeles area for the suspect.

LA County Sheriff Robert Luna said the shooting at the Star Ballroom Dance Studio in Monterey Park left five women and five men dead and wounded another 10 people. Then 20 to 30 minutes later, a man with a gun entered the Lai Lai Ballroom in nearby Alhambra.

Luna said it’s still unclear whether the events are connected.

The incident in Alhambra “may be related,” Luna said. “We’re not quite there yet, but it’s definitely on our radar screen.”

A male Asian suspect entered the Alhambra club with a gun, and people wrestled the weapon away from him before he fled, Luna said. Investigators are interested in a white cargo van that was seen in the area, he added.

The sheriff declined to say what type of gun was recovered in Alhambra. He said investigators believe the gun used in Monterey Park was not an assault rifle.

The massacre, which sent fear through Monterey Park and Alhambra’s large Asian American communities, was the nation’s fifth mass killing this month. It was also the deadliest attack since May 24, when 21 people were killed in an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.

Just when in thought mass killings were on the decline the story states there's already been 5 this month.
When you look at the data, the vast majority of events that qualify as mass shootings aren’t capable of evoke repeat clicks to get the mass media’s attention, and so the vast majority of us don’t know about them. Everything in that prior sentence is frustrating beyond belief.

Just making sure your post gets up twice. How terrible is this country that there's a threshold for mass shootings to be actual news. Or it takes an odd combination of events for it to be huge news (see Moscow's murder of 4 students by a knife).

So Alec Baldwin being charged- it seems even more shady when you see the DA on fox getting her sound bites in. Clearly looks like she wants to run for AG or gov.

a few actual lawyers on twitter had some threads going and I’m not sure the case is very strong. Looks like they’re going after him for his role as producer and actor.

if he was a producer and took steps to make set less safe, then sure get him for that.

when you have armorer on set and someone who’s job it is to handle guns, I’m puzzled as to why the actor gets charged

Or the fact that suicides dominate gun-related deaths, which continue rising, yet mass shootings get all the media coverage. Talk about wrongly framing the debate (not from any of y’all).

It's not just him being a producer. That means nothing since anyone can negotiate a producer credit in their contract if their name is big enough. They'd have to prove that Baldwin had a hand in making decisions which made the set less safe and led to the incident, which if he did, then like you said by all means let him fry. But on the surface, this smells of an overly ambitious prosecutor looking to score points with rubes who are mad at "Hollyweird libruls" for making fun of Dump.

This makes literally no sense. She is in a state that just re-elected a Democrat as Governor. It has two Democrats in the Senate, and all three members of the House elected this year are Democrats.

The District Attorney herself is a Democrat, and is in a county that went something like 75% for Democrats, a county in a State that went for Biden by double digit margins.

I'm no political expert, but going after voters who are full gun-toting right wing rubes in New Mexico seems like sort of an odd choice.

I have no idea as to her reasons for charging Baldwin, but I would think it more likely that she is appealing to anti-gun voters than voters upset at Baldwin for mocking Trump

All that is beside the point. District Attorneys inhabit the same derpy world as RWNJ anchors and pundits. They love to project that tough on crime hyperidiocy. It's right wing virtue signaling. Lofo voters elect that kind of crap for some reason, even in Dem states. And it dovetails perfectly with Echo Chamber messaging.

This strategy could make you mayor of even a liberal, diverse city. People are stooopid when it comes to wars and law enforcement.

I don’t know, with the facts we know right now, I feel like I have to side with Hovey on this one. By all accounts, Baldwin is an elitist f-cking a—hole, but that’s not why he’s being charged. I don’t think there’s enough to convict him, but I don’t think that’s what we’re “arguing” here.

I was stunned that he was being charged. Civilly, sure, almost certainly liable. But the criminal aspect is very tenuous. They pay armorers to understand these things. Obviously that doesn't absolve them completely, but again, that's more civil IMO.

Unless it was Alec Baldwin who brought the live ammunition to the range. Then I think the case is less murky.

The argument is it's "sticking it to them libs, hurr har."
