Gulf Oil Spill 2010

Re: Gulf Oil Spill 2010

In fact, he's said exactly the opposite. Because the oil spill took place in international waters, the government definitely should be involved, according to him.

I believe Ron Paul's whole plank was on non-intervention outside US borders.

However, I think you could definitely make the case in watching the government's inept response to the spill, that government doesn't always have all the answers, which is definitely a point I'd imagine conservatives will be making a lot.

Shouldn't conservatives be welcoming Obama's performance? His response was pretty much 'stay out of it' to begin with.

Re: Gulf Oil Spill 2010

Palin can (at least until the fence went up) see a gas station from her house so she's an expert.

Re: Gulf Oil Spill 2010

Today she blamed environmentalists for the oil spill.
Yeah, it was some interesting logic too.

Basically the easy places to get oil are restricted so the oil companies have been pushed out to getting it in places that are difficult.

It will have a lot of merit with the "Drill, baby, drill crowd". I wondered how they would get out of it and I have to give her credit she found the simple down home spin.

Wonderful. However, Ron Paul's positions are irrelevant.

I'm not talking about Obama's performance exactly. There are some who seem to think that there is some magic button government can push to end crises, clean up oil, stop weather systems in their tracks, turn around economies in days. This should be a wake up call to them. The government agencies involved in this spill performed no better than any other agencies.

There's really only two things anyone need know about the spill.

1. BP's safety record.
2. The government didn't care and allowed the platform to be put out there anyway.

It's an epic failure fest on this one.

Re: Gulf Oil Spill 2010

Is this true?

I think the argument actually may have some merit. NIMBY is a major political force. Cripes, we blew nuclear with 3 mile island and now we won't try again because Nevada won't store it. Yet will build an oil platform and drill two miles deep and destroy the Gulf of Mexico without batting an eyelash till the disaster.

You tell me.

The problem is BP is a for profit company. While raping our coastline, ANWR and shallow waters, they'd still be operating the rigs like the one that has caused this terrible oil spill.

They're an equal opportunity environmental rapist.

Totally agree. BP is not (does not) care about the environment and has a horrible safety record. They should not be winning these contracts. I know there's a company out there somewhere that can do this cleanly and safely. Accidents do happen but this accident had no contingency plan.

BP deserves everything they get from this.

Re: Gulf Oil Spill 2010

Is this true?

Somewhat, but those places where it is easier to extract the oil also have severe environmental constraints. The full picture is more complex.

Of course, the larger issue is that getting at the oil still doesn't solve the long-term problem of declining production and rising prices.

This isn't Palin's idea, it's been pointed out a number of times; in fact, before the spill a common complaint was that we could get more oil cheaper if we'd drill close to shore. State restrictions prevent drilling within sight of the condos & environmentalists tack on "danger to shoreline ecosystems" regs to prevent any drilling in coastal areas. They've been pushed out to the deeps because of all these things.

I know it's not her idea. But, it appears to be her idea to use it for political gain at this time.

Along with many others but when Palin says it, oh my god, its nat'l news

We need energy, simple as that. If its going to be oil, its going to get spilled. Until its something else be prepared for more spills.

That almost sounds like a BP apology. There is no excuse for the magnitude of this spill. None. Spills happen yes, but **** ups this bad should not.
