Gulf Oil Spill 2010

Re: Gulf Oil Spill 2010

Obama says BP has been following the Feds direction in this clean up, no wonder its F'ed up.

Did he say that they had been following the feds, or that they had to start following the feds?

I remember him saying that BP had to do what the feds wanted, and thinking, "This will set off the people who think Obama is a Socialist."

Re: Gulf Oil Spill 2010

Let's hope that Kevin Costner has the cleanup solution.

Re: Gulf Oil Spill 2010

Jeeze... This whole oil spill is playing out like a season at Tech: No good news coming at all.

Re: Gulf Oil Spill 2010

Frankly, the only thing I think the feds can do that BP can't is to throw their hands in the air and nuke the site, hoping the heat seals everything shut instead of the blastwave busting two dozen holes leaking 10k a day.

Re: Gulf Oil Spill 2010

This bothers me, a lot. I hope this only spurs on more media coverage. It's amazing that the government and a private company are allowed to block media access. It's completely unacceptable for the media to be blacked out.

The media really needs to get on their *** about it, flat out say they're being restricted. Take them to court if needed. What's BP and the government hiding?

I could easily see a Pulitzer coming out of a story that exposes some cover-up or whichever paper best documents this disaster. The incentive is there, I just can't believe the media isn't salivating at the opportunity.

Absolutely, there's a cover-up going on, which is why they're trying to bar the media. A couple weeks ago I went to the Newseum in D.C. and was reminded the importance of a free and independent media and the major role it played in the founding of this country. Then again, it is British Petroleum we're dealing with!

Re: Gulf Oil Spill 2010

hey, cmon!! its not THAT bad!! ;) :)

Yeah, just wait. :D

But seriously, I keep hearing that this mud thing has a 60% chance of working. I'm calling bull****. This is from a company that every incentive to lie about the probabilities knowing full well this isn't going to stop until they drill the relief well. (Keeping in mind they said that this wasn't a very large leak when the news first broke.)

Edit: ANd this isn't just me railing on oil companies. I've been a huge defender of theirs for years. I'm just railing on BP. 26 deaths in five years stemming from two major disasters. Unacceptable. Maybe the other companies have records equally poor, but honestly, I can't think of another company that has had as many incidents.

BPs CEO on tv right now saying still another 48 hrs before they know if topkill worked. They use a vast array of pressure gauges on the blowoff preventer to know if the mud is doing its job. Apparently they tried blowing debris in their yesterday trying to bridge the pipeline, limited success. While they are blowing mud in, no oil or gas getting to the surface.

Now they have fund some slick 22 miles long underwater, they fear its from the spraying of dispersants. I'm shocked the oil sunk after spraying detergent on it.

Re: Gulf Oil Spill 2010

There is one thing that I've been wondering and reading the posts about a possible cover up has brought it back into my mind.

It wasn't that long ago that there was the debate about expanding offshore drilling and there were many people on both sides of the argument. There still isn't a definative cause for the initial explosion, only speculation. Is it possible that some eco-terrorist group caused the explosion in an attempt to stop the expansion of offshore drilling and possibly even reduce the current offshore drilling effort? I could definitely see the government and BP not wanting the fact that this was the cause of the disaster known to the public. It would likely hurt both of their interests if it was anounced to be the cause of the explosion and subsequent oil leak.

/conspiracy theory

that would be like greenpeace killing all the whales to end the Japanese whale hunts.

They wouldn't have known that destroying a oil rig would have lead to a huge gushing oil leak that seemingly can't be stopped. Besides, anyone who would consider something like that isn't the most logical person around.

I can understand that from the government's perspective. If it was done by ecoterrorists though, I would think BP would be shouting it from the mountaintops. What incentive would they have to keep quiet about it?

Re: Gulf Oil Spill 2010

we all know BP was in bed with Halliburton who is in bed with Dick Cheney who hates the environment and is thrilled to see oil coating our oceans.

Trashing Hummers didn't stop anyone from buying and driving them, it just required the GM to build some more (and use the resources to do it). Burning a ski lodge didn't make the mountains more pristine, it just required more trees to be cut down to build the replacement.

Yeah, I guess that is true. BP would seem to be on the other side of the thing.
