Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

UNH GH

Go Wildcats!
I did a quick search but turned up nothing, so if this has been done, my sincere apologies.

This is a simple question. What is the greatest sports moment/game you have ever witnessed?

This is perhaps best split up into two parts. Best witnessed in person (AT the event) and on television.

For me, my mind immediately jumps to the 2004 ALCS, Game 4. For a Red Sox fan, that moment is hard to top. I was watching with my entire family, including my sister, who is not much of a baseball fan. Once they won Game 4 I knew they were going to win the series.

In person? Marc Savard's OT Winner in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Semifinals. It was such a great moment, Savvy back from his concussion and all.

The Double OT Win against Buffalo is a close second. I'm glad it ended when it did, as it was getting close to the point where my father and I would have had to leave to catch Amtrak back to Maine.

EDIT: And, for fun/painful memories, the most depressing moment you've witnessed.

i dont go to many events. The best had to have been BU and UNH in the hockey east finals in 2003 - the last time UNH won the tournament. Scoreless game with chances up and down the ice for several OT periods. Tyson Teplitsky scores off ryan whitney to win.

Re: Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

In Person:

Game 7 - 1991 World Series.

On TV:

Sitting watching the 2002 NCAA Hockey Championship between Maine and Minnesota and in the waning minutes thinking I might have to accept a loss for the Gophers only to have Matt Koalska score the tying goal with 52.4 seconds left in the game. Then the game winner in OT by Grant Potulny.

Re: Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

In person 1980 Olympic Hockey (all US games)

2001 HE quarters Game 3. PC beats BU 4-3 in 2OT's.

It's been all downhill since.

Re: Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

in person- greatest play I've seen
1994- Colorado @ Michigan, last second heave to win the game. Killed me, and the rest of the Michigan fans, but without a doubt, it was a great score.

Game-
2004- Denver 1, Maine 0- that had to been one of the most exciting games I've seen, especially since I'm a fan of neither.

(of course, 1996 and 1998 have a special place, but that's different).

For TV- one of the best was the OT game between the Islanders and Capitols from the 80's- I missed a college party watching that game in my dorm room- that would be game, for the moment- Gibson homering off of Eck to win game one for the Dodgers- again, I hate both teams, but that was pretty dramatic.

Re: Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

As far as TV, this one is easy. Game 5 (the resumption), 2008 World Series. Brad Lidge striking out Eric Hinske, watching Ryan Howard make like a linebacker and tackle Lidge and Ruiz at home plate, hard to imagine anything topping that.

In person there is a tie. Sept 16, 1988 Tom Browning tosses a perfect game against the Dodgers. 2 hour rain delay preceded the game, and perhaps 9 or 10,000 of the 16,591 who bought tickets were left at the end. With only 18 of these things pitched in the modern era, I can safely assume I'll never see another one in person in my life. And then April 10, 2008 Calle Ridderwall, 5:44 of OT, from VeNard and White. Still waiting for the next step to happen, but nothing tops that one.

Re: Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

In person: ECAC championship 2003, Cornell scores with :27 left in the 3rd to tie, then wins in OT.

TV: Hmmmm... lots of hockey and football. One of my favorites still has to be watching BSU beat OU in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl.

Re: Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

In Person: 2009 NCAA Championship Game. BU comes back to win it OT. OR Northeast Regional: UNH/UND with UNH scoring a buzzer beater to take it to OT and then winning in OT.

On TV: ... Not sure. Giants win over an 18-0 Patriots team in 2007 was pretty awesome.

These are the only two NCAA title games I've attended, it would be hard to top either one for sheer drama & excitement.

Re: Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

In Person: 1) BU 2009 NC comeback from down 3-1 in last minute 2) Red Sox Yankees Game 7 2004 ALCS 3) BU-Northern Iowa D1AA Playoffs at BU - crazy ending

TV:
Pats beating Rams in SB whatever;
US Hockey 1980 (it was tape delay so it lost some of its luster);
BU 8-7 3OT NC Loss to NMU;

Re: Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

What about your most depressing moment?

Seeing the B's blow it last year hurt so, so much.

UNH going to 2 OT and losing to BC in 2008. A team that swept BC and was poised to win a NT pretty much did its normal playoff impression and stopped playing after being up 4-1. It was uncanny watching them revert right before my eyes.

Re: Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

Greatest personally or most historic significance?

In person - Pick an NCAA hockey championship game in the last 15 years or so - the best games that stick out were 1999, 2001, 2002, 2004, and 2009. And of course, seeing my team win in 1990 and 2006 was personally significant (moreso 1990, although it wasn't a very good game).

Seeing my favorite baseball team in the playoffs was awesome also, but not really of any historical significance for anyone else.

Historically, although I did not really enjoy the event :p, I guess it was unique to see Barry Bonds' 761st home run, because how many times do you see somebody's 761st home run?

Nolan Ryan's 300th win was pretty cool.

WeareND: being at a perfect game must have been awesome. :) I would love to attend a no-hitter - I don't even care if it's thrown against my team. Closest I've gotten was a two-hitter by Esteban Loaiza (and he lost 2-0 - both were home runs).

Re: Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

I still have my ticket stub from Game 6 of the 1975 World Series. That and BC's title in 2001 are the best two that I've attended.

Re: Greatest Sports Moment/Game Witnessed?

I'll add more as I think of them.

In Person:

1991 World Series - Game 7 (Minnesota vs Atlanta, Morris 10 inning shutout)
1991 World Series - Game 6 (Minnesota vs Atlanta, Puckett HR)
2000 Minnesota Wild vs Philadelphia Flyers (Game 1, Oct 11)
2000 Men's Ice Hockey West Regional (Niagara vs New Hampshire, Niagara wins 4-1)
2002 NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Championship (Minnesota vs Maine, OT MN Wins)
2006 WCHA Final Five (Minnesota vs St. Cloud State, 7-8 F/OT)
2007 WCHA Final Five (Minnesota vs North Dakota, MN Wheeler Goal)

On TV:

1986 Super Bowl XX (Chicago vs New England)
1986 World Series - Game 6 (NY Mets vs Boston, Buckner)
1986 World Series - Game 7 (NY Mets vs Boston, Mets win)
1987 World Series - Game 7 (Minnesota vs St. Louis, Minnesota wins)
2003 NCAA Men's Ice Hockey Championship (Minnesota vs New Hampshire, MN wins)
2007 Fiesta Bowl (Boise State vs Oklahoma)

I'm really curious about this one. I was at that game, and I was bored to tears. The arena was empty, the game was terrible. I'm interested in what it was about the game that caused you to put it on your list. :)
