Or bury them in legal defense costs. Go extremely “loose” with charges, pass them out like candy. Many will have lost their jobs so make them penny up for a lawyer, even if the charges are a reach with a conviction being a secondary goal.
This tactic is commonly used for far less crimes.

I'm not certain the public defender's office in D.C. will enthusiastically support this tactic.

Well that's disappointing.

I'll stick my head in the sand on this one because I just don't want to believe that that many people are so broken.

QAnon has proved that you can use a single good idea (anti-human trafficking), and use it to turn people into mindless thugs who will do your twisted bidding. Also see: Religious extremism and nationalistic fascism.

While it's a good idea to punish these morons, the real criminals are the inciters (Dump, Wood, Cruz, Hawley, Loeffler, Carlson) and it is difficult and problematic to hold those people accountable.

The Founders and Hayek did not anticipate that rightwing mass media brainwashing would poison the salutary effects of democracy or the market. We have a system where ultimately the people decide, and so far I haven't heard of a better one, but we have technology that allows reactionary ideologies to implant horrific ideas in the heads of the (large) portion of the population that lacks the basic mental and moral tools to protect themselves.

Until we recognize that brainwashing is violence and work out how to restrain that without also censoring legitimate discourse, we will be the victims of terrorists like Dump and Hannity.

And while fatuous Righties wink and guffaw about pwning the libs over this, remember: Stalin and Mao showed it's just as easy to use these tools from the Left. Unless you help us figure out how to inoculate the derps the next turn of the wheel may come up with a very different Echo Chamber.

As has been said many times before, read Gerald Ford's pardon of Richard Nixon. That's exactly what it said, including for any crimes not known at this time or any crimes not indicted yet.

To be fair, as someone who quoted that very text back in December or so, that language was of course never tested in the courts. It would have been very interesting if a an over-zealous prosecutor had arrested and charged him anyway. ‘Course, that was a time when both sides did genuinely want to move past Nixon and heal the nation.

I'm hearing from others that "people have been betrayed by their leader and we need to make space for them."

At the same time, I'm seeing those same people willing to follow Trump to the ends of the earth. No signs of feeling betrayed.

"6MWE." "Camp Auschwitz." "Civil War, January 6, 2021." Taking the American flag down and replacing it with a Trump flag. At this point, if AOC, Nancy Pelosi, or even Gretchen Whitmer wanted to step on the Nazi's throats with a 6 inch heel, I'm all for it.

It's not up to them. It's up to the prosecutor's office. Like Wayupthere stated, this is a very common tactic used for far less crimes. Go study how the criminal justice system works these days. The basic ploy is to slap as many charges against someone arrested as they can come up with, even for a simple bar fight. That gives the DA office plenty of room to plea bargain with the defense, who is stuck either accepting something or risk their client -- many of whom can't afford better counsel for drawn out cases -- going to a jury trail with all the charges weighing over their heads. It's a risk the DA knows 99% of the accused will never accept. Thus, the scales of justice are greatly swung in the favor of the prosecutor.

This strategy also provides the DA office with excellent stats when it comes to showing the public, who are going to vote for these DA officials, how tough they are on crime. Thus, there is a huge incentive never to change this policy.

The downside is society pays for this. We end up with a slew of people with "minor" crimes forever having the label of felon on them, thus having more difficulty finding a job, and thus takes them out of the taxpayer pool and into the welfare pool. And, we have a massive jail population again for "minor" crimes, which again takes people out of the taxpayer pool and into the jail subsidized pool which costs taxpayers way more money than it costs taxpayers for welfare support. Yet, the public loves to jail people instead of educating them...

I'll stick my head in the sand on this one because I just don't want to believe that that many people are so broken.

When more people who don't want to believe that that many people are broken finally realize that, yes THAT MANY people are broken, we might be able to arrive at a consensus about what to do.

I can't imagine what else needs to happen in this country for people to realize that the few thousand people who marched on the capitol in an attempt to overthrow an election are a pretty acurate representation of the 74 million people who voted for trump in November.

Half of trump's voters supported storming the capitol. Half of the rest at the very least are convinced there is a widespread conspiracy surrounding the widespread fraud they believe was committed to give Biden his "victory." At best 90% of the final quarter of trump voters are bigots who believe white Christians face more discrimination that a trans Black Muslim.

One thing that would have shown me there is actual real hope would have been had the insurrection in the nation's capitol on Wednesday been met with an appropriate amount of force as compared to what we saw at your average Black Lives Matter march over the summer. Which means there should have been widespread gassing, tazing, stomping and even shooting, since the average Black Lives Matter marches were peaceful up and until the cops initiated and instigated any of the violence we saw, whereas on Wednesday we saw a mob of traitors illegally storming the capitol with the expressed intent at interfering VIOLENTLY with a constitutional government function.

45% of this country is broken. The ONLY question is what percentage of that 45% is repairable.

Allegedly #tedcruzkilledacop was trending on twitter but I can't find it so it has probably been removed (though my twitter fu is weak)

If AOC steps on any throat in 6 inch heels I want it to be mine.

qanon is being used by conservatives to getting together all of the people who know authoritarianism is the way they have to be. Democracy means that you can't ban abortion (civil right), can't tax the poor- give to the rich, can't deregulate, they can't discriminate on race/gender/religion, etc. What's really stupid for the minions is that they can't see that their precious needs (guns) can be easily taken away with an authoritarian. To get what they want, the Constitution and Bill of Rights have to be taken apart- and that does include the 2nd.

(the tip off for that was an NPR interview I just heard pointing out that real/current conservativism can only live with an authoritarian.)

If they can verify that capital police gave directions to Schumer’s office, then you have to think it was a large plan to get pelosi, Schumer, pence and others killed

I read this, and the accusation is appalling but this would be virtually impossible to track down. Also, I'm not sure how much stock I put into the words of some second hand story on Twitter. I don't want to let my biases drive here.

But jesus tapdancing christ.

To be fair it was perfectly easy for those people to gain all that stuff through democracy... when they were the majority.

Conservatives cannot live in a tolerant democracy. They can only function politically as a majority because they believe only they are right (cuz ya know god's will or Dear Leader or whatever). So when the average American was a borderline illiterate rural white, they were fine.

But now the average American is urban. More Americans are educated. More are non-white. More are non-Christian. And these people with their eliminationist brain structure cannot deal with a democratic system where they don't hold a whip. It's not that they are "entitled" exactly -- it's that they literally lack the mental and moral sophistication to conceive of living in peace with people different from them unless they still get to decide all the laws and rules.

Conservatives are not equipped for equality and negotiation -- only brutal dominance or violent rebellion. The conservative mind is zero sum.

Yeah, I get that it's not up to the public defenders office. Basically what I was saying is that I'm sure the defender's office would be real pleased to see an influx of 500 cases, each charged with multiple minor crimes, against unemployed people as Wayupthere speculated. I'm sure that office is busy enough.
