What the Washington Post is reporting is by far worse than the Ukraine phone call. We have verifiable proof that trump yet again committed one of the most egregious illegal act by any president in the history of this country, and he is going to get away with it. This has gone entirely too far.
If the Democratic Party wants to send the signal that we are a nation of laws, and the Constitution and the rules mean anything, they must take the most harsh actions allowable by law against this president, both now (and I mean now, today, begin the investigations NOW) AND when he is out of office. But we know that isn't going to happen. The party will play nice. Many here, even some of the more progressive posters, think we should just ignore the law breakers and traitors in the republican party because at the end of the day nothing they are trying is either legal, or "working."
But it IS working.
They are burning down the norms and making a huge portion of the country completely doubt the electoral systems (when it is convenient for them anyway). I am on record as saying I'd take harsh, probably illegal actions against anyone who tried to prevent me from voting when I know I am properly registered and allowed to vote, or if they declined to count a vote I cast legally. Does anyone really believe the right in this country doesn't feel the same way? They believe their votes were not counted. It doesn't matter that you have to be an idiot to think there was anything more than isolated and miniscule anomalies among the nearly 160 million votes for the president in November, and not enough to change the percentages down to the 1 ten thousandth. What matters is these people believe it.
Illegal and traitorous actions MUST have consequences, even when committed by a sitting president. And those actions MUST go beyond simply electoral defeat for the name at the top of the ticket. But none are going to result from trump's latest lawbreaking. Frankly, I think this country is already finished. 10 years from now the world is going to look back on the first 20 years of the 21st century and realize it. This hasn't been about overturning an election, or the futile and ultimately failed efforts behind that. This is about undermining democracy so authoritarianism or fascism can take hold. That wasn't going to be accomplished by winning, or overturning one election. The only thing left is how many countries can we become and what makes up each one?
We have very few shots left and Democrats are about to see how little holding both branches of Congress and the White House mean anymore if they don't intend to be bold in the next few weeks and months. Much like the coronavirus this is going to get darker before it gets better. Right now I think the coronavirus pandemic getting better is much more likely to happen.
