Re: Gophers 2013-14 B1G Things To Come!

After our women's team loss yesterday, I'm already feeling let down. If the men were to lose to RMU, it might be more than I can handle!

You shall find me in a gutter with two fifths of whiskey spent, in my hands, and mumbling about tArrogance

Re: Gophers 2013-14 B1G Things To Come!

I don't know if I quite pessimistic enough to worry much about RMU..But given the US Juniors, the Olympic men, Olympic Women, My Alma Mata getting aced out in the section final and then the Gopher Women, I just don't have a good hockey vibe going....Just feels like another year when they don't meet expectations at the end.

Have the exact same sentiment, due to the same disappointments. We can only hope that the Gopher men can exceed expectations, unlike all the others we were cheering for.

The gophs have a great team this year. But my top worry is that the guys haven't shown they can consistently win a grind it out game that is so prevalent in the NCAAs.

A very valid concern, I think. But based on this interview with Mike Reilly, I'm optimistic that the team will be more determined to do what it takes to put a little winning streak together this post-season:

They had to play and win grind it out games against UW and MSU alone. I am sure there were others.

According to Guentzel there was a sense of "Anxiety and Urgency" in Saturday's practice. That's not quite as confidence inspiring as, say, a sense of "Anger and Resolve". But oh well, let's go out and show Robert Morris what an anxious Gopher squad can do!

Re: Gophers 2013-14 B1G Things To Come!

Since Women's hockey started at UMn, the men's and women's teams have never won a Title the same season. Women won in 2000, the men in 2002 and 2003, the women in 04 and 05, and now the women again in 2012 and 2013. So now that they've lost, maybe that means our men might win?!

Then why didn't the men win in '01, '06, '07, '08, '09, '10, and '11?

All this shows IMO is that IT'S THE MEN'S TURN!!!

Well, 2001 was a year the Women should have won a Title, we were defending Natl Champs, we won the WCHA Regular Season title, but weren't even allowed a chance to defend our title, they let WCHA regular season runner up UMD into the tourney and they won the Title instead.

As for 06-11, we were apparently too busy sending all of our best players into the NHL. And no program wins every year, not even UConn bb.

Re: Gophers 2013-14 B1G Things To Come!

The transitive property doesn't work. There isn't a single team they've played this year that they haven't beaten.

Wait, Colgate. Crap.

Re: Gophers 2013-14 B1G Things To Come!

Well I am messing up my NCAA view experience for the 3rd year in a row. First game - can watch in real time, but when your team plays an opponent they should beat, a victory just doesn't feel like much more than relief. Second game - same time as my last time to play hockey this year, so don't want to miss it. Frozen Four - out of country and not returning until the 21st. Another year of dealing with the dreaded Father-request-for-taping and hoping he actually captures game and then doesn't let slip a clue to the results. (Gophers win NC and there is no way he hands me the tapes without a big smile.) Then, assuming that works, I have to return late in the evening and will have to stay up late that night and watch what would hopefully be both games (if they were to make finals) before going to bed. Next morning I have to leave early for out of town meeting, and I run the office pool so no way I wouldn't hear results from someone once returning to work.

I realize it is all my fault. And I would rather have to put up with all this then have them lose this weekend. We shall see.

BTW- what is with Robert Morris having 3 guys with more points and 4 with more goals than the top Gopher? I realize slight difference in SOS and all, but does anyone know if they are essentially a one line team?

Re: Gophers 2013-14 B1G Things To Come!

My keys in no particular order:
1) Play smart at the blue lines
2) Stay out of the penalty box
3) Ugly goals count as much as pretty ones

They have a pretty good first line, but the difference in strength of schedule is absolutely night and day.
