Good Bye NCHA, Hello WIAC. Grab a life vest SNC and CSS!

Re: Good Bye NCHA, Hello WIAC. Grab a life vest SNC and CSS!

I would have to agree with GB Puck Fans about SNC going DI and playing in the arena. As she said the arena is a dump, if you took a recruit there to see where they were going to play they would turn around a leave. Most Jr. players played in arenas much better than the one in GB. It would take major money to update and I do not see that happening. Youth hockey leagues do not even want to play there.

Well, considering that the NCAA no longer allows play-ups, thus forcing SNC to move the entire athletic department to Division I (and jumping through the ensuing hoops) and the fact that there is no reasonably local D-1 league that would touch a school with a 1400 seat arena (don't even think about the WCHA), I think that pretty much ends this part of the conversation before we even talk about the condition of any facilities.

40% is not 70%....and 20% MSEP is not 40% MSEP....those are BIG gaps...while yes UWS does have an advantage (and probably a major reason why they are 2nd in the NCHA over the years), they are not in the 60% and 70% range and 20% range of MSEP....BIG difference.

It's also a lot harder to kick out a WIAC school then a private school....just saying....again trust me I'm not saying I don't dissagree....but if the other 4 schools can't finacially keep up and or give out the aid, this is their way out of trying to save face in DIII hockey...right or wrong I think this is one of the major issues. SNC hasn't won ALL their NCHA Championships and NCAA Championships just because of FA...but if they were limited to 3 or 4 foreign students a year on a roster, how would they look then?

Over the past several years SNC's roster has been 50/50 USA/Foreign, but many from states other than Wisconsin. Their head coach is from BC and has ties with several teams in Canada - thus the Canadian players. NE Wisconsin HS hockey is immature, so there is a limited base of local talent to draw from so they recruit kids from the NAHL - thus the diverse USA players. They've has success with a couple kids from Latvia and Sweeden, one who they found through the Green Bay Gamblers. European players are not a major source of SNC talent. Minnesota HS hockey is excellent and supplies a large number of players to the western WIAC schools - thus less dependence on Canadian players.

I don't pretend to know the FA side of it, but I think SNC has a solid coach who has molded a successful program that good hockey players want to be a part of. If this is an attempt to sabotage a solid program then all I can say is I'm disappointed in the leaders of the public academic institutions charged to teach our young people how to succeed in life.

I don't see it ever happening, but technically couldn't they move up to D2 then play D1 hockey since no comparable sport exists at that level?

Technically, yes. But wade back a few pages for someone else's comments on trying to find a D2 conference. And there's still no good facility option for the hockey team. The arena is a dump and Resch is managed by the company which owns the Gamblers.

Re: Good Bye NCHA, Hello WIAC. Grab a life vest SNC and CSS!

I trying to get a handle of the breakup of the NCHA which I have always considered one of the strongest D3 leagues in the country. Question how can getting rid of 2 non-state college teams save any money for the U system unless the idea is to go to a less competitive brand of hockey. Not being from out west would any other league want to a team that would win the league title and get the NCAA bid every year?

Also there is the big question of recruiting for the future. Are Canadian players and some top US talent going to commit to this league when there are other offers to a more stable league like the SUNY, NESCAC, and ECAC E. And I have always been told that there is always a lot of competition for the A++ recruits.

In mulling this over the past several days, it seems to me that the big $ savings will come on the Womens side for the "new" WIAC conference.
Trips, for the WIAC school women, to Finlandia (UP), Lake Forest (ILL) and Adrian (Lower Mich) had to be pretty costly.
I don't see that many $ savings on the mens side with the new conference...

If that's the issue, why not put it that way - "the women's teams are withdrawing from the NCHA because of travel costs." That would make sense, but it sounds like they are trying to use this move to put pressure for some kinds of concessions on the men's side, otherwise they would have planned it out with their NCHA partners.

I don't want to read too much into the reason for the WIAC men splitting away from the NCHA.
I am still sticking to my earlier opinion that: SNC and CSS will end up in the same conference, whatever that might be: WIAC, MCHA or the "new" NCHA.

I think the gb fox station story mentioned the women travel costs

Well, well, well...if I had to guess I would say that probably Superior, Stout and River Falls were probably the biggest instigators in the WIAC schools bolting from the NCHA. If Jim McKay was hosting the NCHA TV network tonight, he'd have a sad shake of the head and he'd say, "They're all gone." I wonder how those three coaches are going to spin not making the semifinals. Somehow this will all be St. Norbert's fault and the financial aid they (allegedly) give out. At least the weather has been mild this winter, they'll be able to get on the golf course sooner than usual.

Umm, yeah, I'm gonna have to go ahead and say that comparing hockey playoffs to the Munich Olympic terrorism is a bit of an inappropriate reach.

Sir Nubs used a quote. He or she did not compare the two at all. I have to agree with Sir Nubs that you are way off in your thoughts on Sir Nubs post.

OK, perhaps it wasn't a comparison, I'll give you that... but the context of McKay's quote was referring to the loss of human life in terrorist incident. It wasn't about a sporting event. I would think there would be some other famous call to use to illustrate his point rather than that.

"Down goes Fraizer, Down goes Frazier" could be used here.

I'll agree with your thoughts on this. I can also agree with Nubs post that it is ironic that the three schools are eliminated already. I am sure that the ice surface was somehow not level!

Re: Good Bye NCHA, Hello WIAC. Grab a life vest SNC and CSS!

Where's the USCHO release on this, by the way?

It is here

Someone might have previously noted it, if so, I missed it.

...
the five-team WIAC has already presented St. Norbert with the option of potentially applying for admittance into the conference in effort to satisfy its eligibility for an automatic NCAA berth ...

“There are a lot of good players who have come through and a lot of good coaches who have been a part of it,” said Coghlin, who’s the all-time winningest coach in conference history (395 wins). “The NCHA is a pretty storied league and if indeed it has gone by the wayside, it is what it is. Progress moves forward...
