Good Bye NCHA, Hello WIAC. Grab a life vest SNC and CSS!

Re: Good Bye NCHA, Hello WIAC. Grab a life vest SNC and CSS!

Oswego & Plattsburgh ARE "publics".

Whose state funding took a hit back in 08 or so as did the rest of the SUNY system. Something private schools don't have to worry so much about as I believe most of their governmental aid comes from the federal level.

Re: Good Bye NCHA, Hello WIAC. Grab a life vest SNC and CSS!

It is not like the UW's don't have any internationals students, they do, and at least in the case of Eau Claire, Point and Superior they give scholarships and aid to international students. River and Stout have international students as well but it is not clear what if anything they do to aid them.

For example - UW Stout has their International Student Tuition Scholarships

International Student Tuition Scholarships are available to qualified international students based on their academic achievement at UW-Stout, their participation in international cultural activities, and the availability of funding.

That said, IMO they are not on par with Plattsburgh, SNC, Oswego, etc.

Re: Good Bye NCHA, Hello WIAC. Grab a life vest SNC and CSS!

What would tickle your fancy? The fact that the Wisc schools have no foreign players % wise or the fact SNC offers up to a $12,000 intrernational grant?

What is the tuition + room and board at UW - Wherever, and what it the tuition + room and board at SNC? Comparing net costs is the only comparison that makes sense. I don't know the answer to this, and I suspect most people don't, but if my tuition is 12,000 more that yours and I give someone a 12,000 grant we are now even.

What is the net cost of attendance for a player at UWSP, and what is the net cost of attendance for a player at SNC? The amount of aid to reach a level playing field isn't relevant, except for the people spending the money.

You are correct if talking only the "bottom line dollar amount", but there are significant additional secondary criteria, including "top of mind awareness" and non-financial student services, etc. As long as the financial aid is sufficient enough to make the school a financially possibility it is relevant enough.

"Brand Name" retailers often offer coupons that still result in the brand name costing significantly more that the generic, but it is enough to sway many "customers".

I love how this somehow went from a good discussion to a pi** on the Plattsburgh guys thread.

Re: Good Bye NCHA, Hello WIAC. Grab a life vest SNC and CSS!

Ah, but they can be as a percentage of the tuition or better yet as out of pocket costs after aid is subtracted.

See post above, I totally acknowledge that MANY factors - including many beyond financial factors, that make up the "cost" of attendance, but:

That said, IMO they are not on par with Plattsburgh, SNC, Oswego, etc.

I believe this is a discussion on one of the significant factors the caused the WIAC hockey schools to make the move they did - the desire to play on a competitive playing field – both on the ice and in recruiting.

Re: Good Bye NCHA, Hello WIAC. Grab a life vest SNC and CSS!

I just went to look. The out-of-state tuition for UWSP is approximately 15,000 per year. The tuition for SNC is approximately 30,000 per year.

The Canadian incentive grant reduces the cost of attending SNC to be about even with that of attending UWSP. That is for all students, not just hockey players, and if it were primarily hockey player getting this grant, SNC would be in NCAA jail. Now as for other considerations, ("brand," academic perception, etc.) That's something that schools should compete on. If the WIAC schools can't compete with SNC on that basis, that's something that they need to fix, not throw SNC out of the league. There is more aid being spent at SNC, but for Canadian students, it only brings the financial costs to level.

IMO, they are returning to the porch.

I don't get the WIAC pity party either. First, these schools are very large and have a lot of departments and programs not offered at a place like SNC or CSS. On top of that, they have pretty generous admission standards, given their mandates. These schools can also offer in-state tuition to kids from Minnesota. Last time I looked, Minnesota produces a TON of good college hockey players and stocks much of the USHL and NAHL. Anyways, these schools have a ton going for them. If they don't want to work hard to exploit these advantages, that is not the fault of SNC or CSS.

I dont know if it is a pity party or an attempt to understand why WIAC schools might take their puck and go play without SNC and CSS.

Pretty much yes. I don't agree with it one bit as dropping a great program like SNC from your league doesn't make any of much sense. At the same token right, wrong, or whatever finacial factors can make a big part of a descision or an excuse to "not want to play with you anymore"
. There is nothing wrong with what SNC has done. A great program with one of the best coaches around. Another factor they draw in the players they do, but if you think finacials don't play apart your nuts. Its the loophole in DIII sports, and as long as its within the rules its legal. As I said its not a kawinki dink that the private schools have such a high % of foreign compared to state schools. Yes there are great Wisc and Minn players but after all the D1 schools grab them...the pool is MUCH larger in Canada...

Re: Good Bye NCHA, Hello WIAC. Grab a life vest SNC and CSS!

To keep with the level playing field theme, I think that Coghlin should be forced to coach at each WIAC state school at least 3 games per season. ;)

Re: Good Bye NCHA, Hello WIAC. Grab a life vest SNC and CSS!

Kind of interesting that no one has mentioned that most of St. Norbert's top players from last season's national champion are Americans. O'Brien and Longley are from Minnesota. Tabisz from Ohio. Bernardy from Utah. Keefer from Michigan. Soley from Elk Mound, Wisconsin. Pulak from Green Bay. Hammerbeck from Superior, right out from under certain noses. I'm guessing they got a lot of international financial aid too. With the exception of Ryd these were all of SNC'S top players from last year.

Utah would be a foreign country - after all it's located to the West of the "West Region." Got to be a foreign country :D

Re: Good Bye NCHA, Hello WIAC. Grab a life vest SNC and CSS!

I have been reading the past few pages and all I can say is that I don't see a way that this situation breaks up the MCHA.
The league as a whole has worked too hard to get as far as it has and, if it works out that the league adds SNC and CSS, all I can say is holy cow, the red-headed stepchild would be in charge of the west IMO.
I don't see any advantage anymore for any of the MCHA schools to leave the league.
The ones who would have been interested have already taken a ride on that merry-go-round and suffice to say, the grass ain't always greener.
