GM Closing down Saturn

Re: GM Closing down Saturn

Hmmm... Saturns were actually reliable and mildly interesting.

So basically... Cadillac is the only GM brand that's going to stick around that is actually worth buying? Good to know.

Re: GM Closing down Saturn

Meh... Saturns were interesting when they first came out, but have long since just been rebadged Opels and other GM corporate cars.

Shame it had to go like this, but I'd have saved Pontiac before Saturn.

My understanding is that over the past couple of decades, Pontiac has only sold well in the Detroit metro area. It has been a dying legacy brand for a long time, in spite of sustaining a small pool of loyalists.

Honestly, I am relieved that neither my grandfather nor my great-grandfather were around to witness the turmoil at GM in the past few years. It would've been embarrassing and depressing for both of them. The death of the Pontiac brand doubly so. :(

Re: GM Closing down Saturn

Pontiacs also seemed to well around St. Cloud for some reason...

I have a Saturn. Sorry to hear a lot of people will be out good careers....But the cars are junk and they won't stand behind them...I never know when my car might think it's being stolen. GM Passlock, very common with a number of GM cars. Randomly won't start and you have to wait 10-15 before it can start. But that's GM...

Re: GM Closing down Saturn

I liked the Saturn roadster that recently came out, whatever that model was called. EDIT: the Sky.

Always liked the Pontiac Grand Am/Prix series of cars.

The SC2 was okay, but I could never buy one, as my head either hit the roof (I'd have to tilt my head to fit in the car, and that was while driving) or if there was a sunroof, my head would be sticking slightly out of the roof. I like vehicles that I can fit into.

When I see a Grand Am/Prix, it's usually being driven by a chick in stone-washed jeans with big hair and smoking reds. Even in 2009.

My car is going to be an orphan. :(

BTW, this will continue my streak of having every dealership where I have bought a car close before I sold the car. (I tend to keep cars quite long since I ride my bike more than I drive. This is only my fourth car.)

Your bike company should be nervous.

Re: GM Closing down Saturn

I had an old 1993 Saturn. It was a reliable car until the bitter end, when everything went wrong. I dealt with the oil burning engine, the slight tendency to overheat, and all the other problems - but it was getting to be a real pain. The last straw was when I was driving with the sunroof open and it started to rain - so I go to close it, and the sunroof motor fails.

I was just thinking the same thing. I bought an Olds Cutlass Supreme; GM closed Oldsmobile down. I bought a Chevy Colorado; The dealership in Verona closed within a year. I had a Saturn; GM just closed IT down.

What car should I buy next??

I own two of them and have owned three. The last one is my last American car. Never again.

GM with its "May the Best Car Win" adds are probably the most laughable thing on TV.

Re: GM Closing down Saturn

American-branded cars deserved their beat-down -- they were crap for thirty years, and only the gun-totin', truck-buyin', Census-worker-hangin' crowd kept them in the game as long as they were.

However, I was in a fearsome wreck in '02 that completely totalled my Saturn, and I walked away literally without a scratch. I must have gotten their only safe vehicle -- a lemon. :D

Re: GM Closing down Saturn

By all accounts Saturn was doing a lot better. The Aura was very well reviewed.

From everything I've read the new Chevy Malibu is a great car too. I think GM is on the upswing with its product strategy and I wish them well.
