Global War on Terror Version 7 - The Nightmare that Threatens the World!!!

Re: Global War on Terror Version 7 - The Nightmare that Threatens the World!!!

I am in no way shape or form blaming the Europeans here, but questioning their internal security. Are there that many organized and radicalized persons in these countries that they can't keep track of them? Seems they can hit their targets almost at will...:(
They said they had/have 800 people under surveillance in Belgium

I hope not. I have zero faith in our legal and political institutions if there is ever a truly massive attack. I can imagine us abusing tens of millions of innocents to try to protect ourselves from a few thousand of actual terrorists. And that is of course exactly the situation terrorists are working for: use us to immanentize the eschaton.

Never let unbound fear and anger go to waste.

Yeah. She should come home. I'm sure it is an amazing experience but although I am not an alarmist I would say Turkey has moved from the green to the red column in the last two years.

I think you're being a little alarmist by telling her to vacate the city. Istanbul is a metropolis of what, 14 million people? I lived in Nairobi for six months last year and now live in Ethiopia. Two of Al-Shabbab's mortal enemies. You get by. Fleeing the region because of a terrorist attack, be it in Ankara or at Westgate/Garissa ignores the fact that even in these countries with "high" terrorist activity and low state police or intelligence support, your risk remains quite low. I was always more likely to be killed in a car jacking in Nairobi than getting shot in an Al-Shabbab raid.

I'd flee the region because Turkey seems to me to be at risk of hopping on the escalation crazytrain. An American is specifically at risk because of the symbolic value of an American captive or casualty. My neighbor's kid? I'll take that chance. My kid? Nope -- there are lots of places to get a world experience.

I wouldn't tell my daughter to leave Indonesia or even Pakistan (Dr. Mrs. has a close friend in Pakistan and we're not worried.). But Turkey, specifically, seems to be at risk of going to A Bad Place. It may not happen, but risk/reward is too high.

And yeah, Kenya and Nigeria seem a little too cray for my tastes right now, too.

Never underestimate the security provided to the US (and all of the Americas) by two giant bodies of water.

You can't control land borders nearly as well. Europe is always going to have the tougher job security wise.

That's a good point.

I don't know anyone who would touch Nigeria with a ten foot pole. Between the Delta, the North, and just basic petty crime in the bigger cities it seems like a stereotypical view of a hellish African country, even if it's somehow stuck together.

I'm mildly surprised you're not terribly worried about Pakistan. The mass protests is support of this guy doesn't seems a pretty clear marker of a place not to go.

One reason we're not worried is our friend is a devout-ish Muslim. Another is she just married into the third wealthiest family in the country. Why didn't I think of that?

But honestly I'm not that worried about Americans there as long as they stay in Sindh or the Punjab, and it's not like she and her husband are going to do poverty tourism in the north.

I have a brother who was the doctor at the U.S. Embassy in Ankara and responsible for medical operations at the embassies in some of the neighboring countries, like Georgia and Armenia (and possibly a 'stan) about 10 years ago. He and his wife, who is east Indian and raised Muslim, loved their three or so years in Ankara, including the people. But despite the affection he developed for Turkey, he recently expressed concern that my daughter continuing to live there. Turkey is just in a very difficult position right now, with the Kurdish issue, Russia, proximity to Syria and their location on the geographic, political, and cultural fence. Erdogan's recent domestic policy decisions have been troubling too. Historically and culturally a fascinating country to spend time in, but it's getting a little tense there, even though it appears the expats regularly receive pretty good security information from the US consulate. For instance, they were advised weeks prior to last week's bombing to stay away from political establishments and were warned to stay home, if possible, this last weekend. She learned Turkish and does some acting in Turkish TV, commercials and other commercial modeling, so she flies frequently to Izmir, Antalya, and Ankara for shoots and is in airports a lot as a result. That is the part that causes me to worry a little. Not a lot, but a little. She spent two years in college in NYC before trading that life in for commercial modeling in Europe, and I've always felt she was as safe in places like Barcelona and Istanbul as she was in Morningside Heights.

Another of Dr. Mrs. friends is in Kigali and he went there because he didn't want his family in Abuja. So yeah, when you're losing to Rwanda you may want to rethink your domestic security.

Ah in that case i stand corrected. Living out of a Lahore villa probably is safer than your standard western city.

At the risk of detailing my travels throughout the years, I lived for two years in Burundi (before the fall) and spent a lot of time in Kigali. It is ridiculously safe, even for a western city. Paul Kagame does not tolerate any potential threat to his attempt to build a post-ethnic, investor friendly paradise and the police treat crime accordingly. An African Singapore if there ever was one. I've stumbled around that town after 2am with no care in the world.

Yeah I would definitely not be thrilled to be traveling a lot near the Syrian border. Fascinating and my assumption has always been, with the brief amount of time I spent in Turkey, that even if the rest of the country was slowly going backwards, Istanbul was progressive enough and the security good enough, that you were more or less safe.

I guess my worry about Istanbul is that Damascus was perfectly safe right up until... it wasn't. And before that, Beirut.

Re: Global War on Terror Version 7 - The Nightmare that Threatens the World!!!

Come for the story. Stay for the Comments.

I hope as many knucks read that as possible.

Retired general Wesley Clark was interviewed after the Brussels attack and asked whether such an attack was likely to occur in the U.S. He answered that it is certainly possible but that one important factor that weighs in our favor and distinguishes us from many countries like Belgium is the opportunity and inclusiveness our society offers to all races and ethnicities, including muslims. He is a military animal, so he believes in other tools as well, but it was pleasing to hear those comments from him. Like the piece you quote, I hope it gets to the audience that can learn from it.
