Global War on Terror Version 7 - The Nightmare that Threatens the World!!!

Re: Global War on Terror Version 7 - The Nightmare that Threatens the World!!!

The bikinis and bars were back in the 1960s & 70s. Tehran and Mogadishu etc. have clearly regressed since and the regression is accelerating. What's to be done?

Drive the cretins out of power and back to their caves. It will work in Topeka, too.

Re: Global War on Terror Version 7 - The Nightmare that Threatens the World!!!

I think "Thou shalt not (kill, lie, steal, commit adultery)" are pretty good laws.

So do I. What does that have to do with Russell's teapot?

Re: Global War on Terror Version 7 - The Nightmare that Threatens the World!!!

Geezer's post that tC would pass laws from the Bible.

Those laws are in the Koran, too. Wanna elect a guy who wants to enact Sharia law?

Re: Global War on Terror Version 7 - The Nightmare that Threatens the World!!!

For clarity, it's Cruz who is the fundy "christian" who would pass laws from the Bible. Trump is the guy that said "Church? Is that where you eat the little baked goods and drink wine?" (or something like that... anyway, he's clearly the anti-Cruz. Not that I prefer either the hyper-religious (Cruz) or purely secular (Trump) brand of crazy)

The funny thing is how many of Drumpf's brownshirts are stark raving fundies, too. It's almost as if their political stance and even their religious affiliation has nothing to do with God or morality or principles and everything to do with a psychotic reaction against anybody who is not an old white male Christian knuckledragger.

Re: Global War on Terror Version 7 - The Nightmare that Threatens the World!!!

Topeka is in Kansas, not Missouri. Though I can see where this is headed...

Kep: "I came to Topeka for the caves."
Me: "There are no caves in Topeka."
Kep: "Perhaps I was misinformed."

There is no "Perhaps" in that quote, dammit.

Also, you didn't specify Topeka, KS in your response. :-)

So do I. But I'm an old-fashioned Lutheran (highly valuing the separation of church and state) so I don't think that being biblical is what makes them good civil laws, and I don't think the secular government ought to define spiritual morality, either... In cases other than killing very small children, which is so clearly wrong any way you look at it.
Of course there is a lot of overlap between sin and civil crime. But one shouldn't define the other, since the temporal and spiritual realms of existence don't control one another (in the Lutheran view).

Hey, even the Catholics quote the whole "render unto Caesar what is Caesar's" line quite regularly.

I know, and I've found that Catholics make great friends and neighbors. My problem is with the people we've taken to calling "Evangelicals" who want a religious civil government. In the first place, because outward conformity to a law in no way indicates righteousness, and to suggest it does is dangerous to the soul. (Matthew 5:28) But there are many reasons.
Matthew 23
(wrong thread? sorry)

Well, they have in interest in Rome getting Her cut. ;-)

My understanding of "evangelism" is that in theory it's just a spreading of the Word. And if I thought I had the secret to life, the universe and everything I'd probably want to spread it too. The problem creeps in when you claim you have a monopoly and everybody else is fair game because if they're not in your club they're ****ed. That when it stops being about faith and starts being just another depressing police state.

Agree. I have quoted this on more than one occasion. IMHO Jesus would throw a nutty about some of what people are doing in His name in politics (and a lot of other things.)

My Lutheran church belongs to the ELCA- Evangelical Lutheran Church of America- Synod. There was quite a discussion about whether to remove that part because of all the nutbags that have made being Evangelical akin to needing to visit Nurse Ratched for an attitude adjustment. It is not supposed to be related to radical, extremist, rabid Christianity. It is supposed to be a joyful sharing. they missed the memo

Keep it and take the word back. The Democratic People's Republic of Korea isn't going to win the fight for the word "democracy," and you shouldn't let the dirtbags steal "evangelical."

That is what they decided but it is difficult to get people to see past the first word. Immediate image is of Westboro Baptist Church types

Yeah, but that gives you guys a mission. Be happy -- worthwhile missions are hard to come by.

Would prefer the mission is not reclaiming a word that has been co-opted. More useful things to do than that
