Re: Global War on Terror Version 7 - The Nightmare that Threatens the World!!!
Borders are still a national responsibility and spending is at an all time high. You make it sound like all other administrations were serious...and Obama's not. Hardly the case:
"Under the Obama administration, the resources that the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) dedicates to security at the Southwest border are at an all-time high. Today, there are 3,000 additional Border Patrol agents along the Southwest Border, and our border fencing, unmanned aircraft surveillance systems, and ground surveillance systems have more than doubled since 2008. From 1990 to 2007, the population of undocumented individuals in the United States grew from 3.5 million to 11 million people. Since then, the size of the undocumented population has stopped growing for the first time in decades. Border apprehensions — a key indicator of border security — are at their lowest level since the 1970s."
With the debt, the federal government can't spend uncontrollably everywhere. Every department needs to tighten the belt...and it doesn't appear that there's too much belt tightening going on right now on this ledger. But if states feel that they need even more spending...they should fund it. And in the case of AZ, they can afford it...the state has some of the lowest taxes in the country and operates at a deficit with the federal government already.
Borders are an national responsibility, or at least they were under previous administrations. Maybe we should fund relief efforts like Hurricane Sandy, given that at least some of us don't get hurricanes. That's silly of course, just as border states having to pay for border security (and all the other attendant costs) is silly. Winter weather is hardly analogous to border security. Winter weather is more analogous to summer weather, where those of us in warmer climates deal with toasty hot summers, you northerners deal with cold winters, of course.
