Global War on Terror Version 7 - The Nightmare that Threatens the World!!!

The connotation of a private school is very much based around its agenda. In the 90's, the parochial schools (at least in NNY) really started pushing high educational values and not so much of the Bible thumping (although Roman Catholic theology was an important subject), and people flocked there. Once they started Bible thumping after 2000 or 2001, they started to contract, and eventually consolidated or folded. Sometimes there are other reputations, like how the parochial school near where FlagDUDETTE grew up has a "Please Sister, not the ruler!" reputation, but I don't know anything beyond that.

A Catholic school bible thumping? Surely you jest!

This is from somebody who had 11/12 years of Catholic education starting in 1961.

The nuns in orono certainly liked rulers. The brothers at John bapSt would hit you with a closed fist

My three eldest brothers' public school in Marietta, Georgia used to send out a random kid from the classroom to bring in a switch when a kid in the class needed discipline. My brothers' eyes would light up with the memory of finding those switches because you knew the next kid wasn't going to give you a wimpy one when it was your turn for discipline. The youngest of those three actaully ran away from class when the teacher sent out a kid to fetch a switch to use on my brother. The teacher and principal searched for hours trying to find my brother before finally calling my mom at home. I can't tell you how many times I heard that story as a kid, and how many times I was so glad to be raised in MN and not GA.

Corporal punishment pretty much disappeared in 2nd grade for me. However, I am convinced if the School Sisters of Notre Dame ever coached baseball they would be experts in the relay throw. Unerringly they would hit the perpetrator (usually a boy) with the eraser with a quick turn and peg.

Sr. Maria Vincent de Paul hit me with a couple of slaps when she caught me running out of the boys bathroom in 1st grade. When she realised that she'd hit the wrong kid, she gave me free candy.

That was 54 years ago.

Pat understands the tribal, spiritual warrior mentality so well because he shares it. There's something to the notion that the Middle East is one great Darwin Award. Keep feeding the tribalists and warriors of faith from all sides into its maw to thin the herd.

Very interesting article on the efficacy of the aircraft carrier in modern warfare and the contention that the Navy's building of bigger more sophisticated (and more expensive) air craft carriers and attendant equipment is badly misgauging the needs now and in the future. Seems pretty persuasive to me.

Bob! Something we agree on! :)

Yeah, a single EMP can disable an aircraft carrier pretty easily, it appears.

today's "war" is asymmetric war, much of it is being waged in cyberspace. we are far too vulnerable to a really simple easy attack, just like how the USS Cole was disabled by a simple explosive delivered by a small fishing boat.

We are always fighting the last war. we'd be far far better off if we were to imagine how others might want to attack us using today's tools and technology. It's really scary to me to observe just how easily our big-deal fancy weapons can be neutralized.

More War. Stockholders and CEO's made some money. Everyone else suffered and got no benefit. More War tomorrow.

Of course a single EMP can. Name a machine manufactured today that doesn't depend on some form of electronics.
