Global War on Terror 8 - Winter is Coming

Re: Global War on Terror 8 - Winter is Coming

A new magazine issued by the Islamic State advises lone jihadists to get over any squeamishness about using knives and embrace sharp objects as "widely available" weapons of jihad in nighttime stabbing campaigns.

That sounds familiar ... something about "mall" and "St. Cloud, MN" ...

And then there's this:

ISIS' Al-Hayat Media Center issued the second issue of its magazine Rumiyah, meaning Rome, in English, Turkish, German, French, Indonesian, Russian, Arabic and Uyghur. The design of the magazine is more simple than ISIS' English-language Dabiq. It's also much shorter: 38 pages compared to the 82 pages in the last issue of Dabiq.

The magazine's shorter? Must be a tougher ad sales market ...:rolleyes:

If every jihadist switched their gun, bomb, plain, train or automobile to a knife we'd see fewer fatalities. ;)

Lest anyone jerk their knee to that comment I am not saying knives can't kill, that jihadists are not still a realistic threat that require significant attention, etc., etc., etc.

Grant you your disclaimer. even so, there is an unspoken assumption in your first sentence that may or may not hold, which could affect your conclusion.

If gun, bomb, plane, etc. attacks took more time, plotting and co-conspirators to pull off, switching to random machete attacks in public places might not reduce overall fatalities all that much: fatality per incident might well be lower, as you suggest; but would the number of incidents increase since they would be so much quicker and easier to execute?

If that were the case, why aren't they more common already?

Do you <strike>cons</strike> [ex-Boy Scouts] ever quit thinking about [Be Prepared]?

I'd rather be prepared for an emergency that doesn't happen, than have a disaster strike and then not know how to respond.

The one single thing we have consistently done the past eight years (if not longer) is underestimate our enemies. That has been deadly. "Whistling past the graveyard" is not a viable strategy.

and no, I've never been in prison. I have no idea how prior incarceration figures into this situation.

I agree. We should take the 2003 Iraq approach more often. We did, however, underestimate how deadly electing Bush would be, and we must be vigilant about not making such a mistake again.
