Global War on Terror 8 - Winter is Coming

Re: Global War on Terror 8 - Winter is Coming

Many secular thinkers now regard “religion” as inherently belligerent and intolerant, and an irrational, backward and violent “other” to the peaceable and humane liberal state

It could never occur here.

Quite the peculiar retort in this context given the not so magnanimous aversion to all things Islamic from the right.

Re: Global War on Terror 8 - Winter is Coming

Good job. I wonder if the current mantra that "this country has always been tolerant of all faiths" is true?

It surely seems like it is true to me: people still seem very tolerant of other people's faith[SUP]1[/SUP]; what we do not tolerate is anti-social behavior.

[SUP]1[/SUP]except militant atheists.

Re: Global War on Terror 8 - Winter is Coming

After a skim, a decent article which identifies some straight forward (and in my mind correct) hypotheses.

It does not say why many of the relatively small percentage of violent religious fanatics exist to begin with. That is due to underlying tendencies in many for extremism/anger that already pre exist in say 10 to 20% of all peoples without adherence to any ideology. Religion (or nationalism or even fanaticism of things like guns) then attracts that extremism as it adds perceived rationale or other 'grounding' which is typically a huge leap from what these ideologies are all about. The article does identify that those with similar strains of judgment fall into the secular camp which then proceeds to mis judge the cause of extremism and directly blame the ideology. It is the misdiagnosis of the ideology that then cause moderate adherents to feel like they're ideology is under unwarranted fire (which it is) and this misdiagnosis plus pre existing extremist lobbying spreads extremism within that ideology. Rinse, repeat.

They also purged their universities. That typically doesn't end well.

There is typically an ultra-conservative backlash against intellectuals during frightening times. We have our own dances with Gleichschaltung here in the US whenever the people are scared and want to run under the skirts of the nearest head ape.

Re: Global War on Terror 8 - Winter is Coming

Why should we be tolerant of bigots? I'm so sick of bigots claiming they are being persecuted. They deserve to be treated like *******s because they CHOOSE to be *******s.

Yeah that little diatribe ranks up there with the whole idea of reverse racism...oh those poor WASPS!

Re: Global War on Terror 8 - Winter is Coming

So you think the best way to "stop racism" is by perpetuating racism?

Does anyone actually like you outside of your imaginary friends and the 12 people who listen to your podcast? (with your idiotic opinions you have to at least be planning one right?)

Another leader wakes up to the perils of leaving citizenry defenceless by their gun control stance. http://www.radio.cz/en/section/news/zeman-czechs-should-arm-themselves-over-threat-of-terrorism

You should be careful who you get into bed with. I know about this guy because being a quarter Czech I'm interested in Czech history and politics. Zemen is a pathological liar and a white nationalist. You just backed the Bohemian David Duke, congratulations.

Oh, he's also a criminal:

In 1999, one of Zeman's advisors, Jaroslav Novotný, allegedly blackmailed the director of the state-owned Štiřín Castle, Václav Hrubý. Novotný allegedly pressed him to falsify evidence in order to prove that former Foreign Minister Josef Zieleniec corrupted journalists. The police confirmed the blackmail, but nobody was punished, despite convincing evidence.[37]

Zeman has been often criticized for his contacts with the powerful Czech lobbyist and his former chief advisor, Miroslav Šlouf. During Zeman's prime minister-ship, Šlouf maintained contacts with the controversial entrepreneur František Mrázek, nicknamed the "Godfather of Czech Organized Crime". Šlouf and Mrázek met and exchanged information at the Office of the Government of the Czech Republic.[38] Mrázek was assassinated in 2006. In the leaked wiretapping records, he nicknames Zeman mlha ("fog") and claims that Zeman "could not be bribed, and wanted only a sandwich, three pickles and for people to like him."[39] In 2010, Šlouf and Martin Nejedlý, a representative of the Russian oil company LUKoil in the Czech Republic, were the main sponsors of his Party of Civic Rights – Zemanovci.[40]

Then you probably also know that the Czechs were one of the first to reinstate the use of firearms after the Soviet Union (which had banned firearms from the citizenry) had collapsed. It's not all that surprising from a country like this to see it happen. There's also nothing wrong with being a nationalist. A leader should want his/her country to be the strongest in the world, and that there are plenty of groups out there looking to destroy it.

Psst. That's not what "nationalist" means in this context. (You may want to follow the link...)

Oh, you mean your link to more race-baiting? You'll do anything to push the anti-gun narrative, won't you...

Re: Global War on Terror 8 - Winter is Coming

A German look at the world and its troubles.

So what can we do? The West's strength has always been in its ability to accept criticism directed at it and to change. The Western economic order -- capitalism -- has proven itself to be durable because it was flexible and capable of adapting. In the battle of systems against socialism, capitalism was also superior because it integrated social issues and transformed into a social market economy. The West will need to develop this force for integration again. That sounds provocative. How, after all, is democracy supposed to integrate its enemies -- the Islamists, the populists and the authoritarians?

Of course we cannot sacrifice the principles of democracy and rule of law, but our political system must address the fears and needs that are spawning a yearning for authoritarianism: the need for order and reliability, the longing for identity, clarity, a sense of place, the feeling of a loss of control in the era of globalization. Trying to talk people into believing that they are globalization's winners is of no help if that doesn't correspond with the way they perceive their lives to be. It discredits democracy when European integration is pushed forward even though a majority reject it. It subverts trust in politicians when they insist on open borders, while the people want to know who is in their country.
