Don't knock it. Most copy for mass communication in the United States (tabloids, talk radio, USA Today, network news) is written deliberately for an audience with the effective educational attainment of fourth grade. That is the CW for the marketing sweet spot.

Writing for high schoolers would be "elitist." :rolleyes:

The NY Times is written at what, an eighth grade reading level? And that's the standard bearer. Most other papers are like 6th grade reading level, I think.

As a former broadcast news producer, I learned to write at an eighth grade level. Use big words and people become too engrossed in said big words.
