Re: Global War on Terror 8 - Winter is Coming

Why do I have to read about this in the British "press"?
https://www.thesun.co.uk/news/18090...-after-checking-whether-victims-were-muslims/

Press is in quotes above because some don't like The UK Sun.

A Twin Cities source:
http://minnesota.cbslocal.com/2016/09/18/mall-stabbing-victim-recalls-encounter/

Perhaps the only positive to come out of the St. Cloud stabbing attacks is the local Somali community (which is substantial for a town the size of St. Cloud) came out to voice their opposition to such attacks, saying that they want to live peaceful lives. And it wasn't just one or two people, there was a large group of them denouncing the attack to reporters, including TV for their faces to be seen.

Re: Global War on Terror 8 - Winter is Coming

Think about what that says.

29 of their fellow citizens were attacked via IED and, meh, whatever, ...

This sort of thing happens on a regular basis in Israel. Should everyone in Israel be paralyzed by fear? Should they stop living their lives?

I believe you meant to say "murdered". 29 plus 9 were hurt.

You didn't read the link, did you?

Lets also give some praise to law enforcement and alert citizens. They tracked this guy down pretty quickly and bagged him even though he was armed and dangerous.

No, a police bomb tech plum-done-blow-ed-up a robot when he remotely manipulated it to cut a wire and picked wrong.

I'm am pleased that the robot took the hit and not either human (the homeless guy or the bomb tech).

Dang. I was getting excited for a minute on the prospect of artificial intelligence, even if the decision made by the AI entity got itself blown up! ;)

Re: Global War on Terror 8 - Winter is Coming

Side bar:

Things like "A robot cut the wrong wire" grinds on me like "An SUV plowed into a crowd of people" written into "news" pieces.

No, the robot did what was commanded. Wah-BANG! in this case. The SUV didn't do it; the < bleep > drunk behind the wheel did it.

This probably belonged in the "Gear Grinding" thread.

Be paralyzed by fear? No.
Stop living? No.

Demand better? Yes.

One you sure as heck intimated "yes" for the first two and demand better than what? We are no worse off when it comes to successful terrorist acts than we were before Obama took office. "Demand better" gtfoh

I'm sure I'm missing the basis for this, but since I am, I'll just say that I am.

Especially in the last two years, there has been a dramatic increase in attacks in the US attributed directly to Islamic extremists resulting in death and/or injury. Here's some numbers for two 6 year periods in the US:

2002-2008-- 12 terror attacks; (2 attributed to Islamic extremists) 19 thwarted attacks with 68 arrested. 74 killed, 64 injured.

2010-2016-- 42 terror attacks; (19 attributed to Islamic extremists) 10 thwarted attacks with 14 arrested. 214 killed, 592 injured.

A given individuals chances of being killed or injured in a terrorist attack are so small as to be totally insignificant, but at the same time, I certainly wouldn't say we couldn't hope to do better.
