Girls hockey

Could you briefly explain the co-ed teams? Are these boys teams that allow girls to play if they are good enough to make the team? Or are there requirements that each team have an equal number of boys and girls on the roster, and there has to be a certain number of each on the ice?

Yes essentially boys teams. I hesitate to call them that because there are definitely girls too. I don’t know if any of the girls that play are impact players. I think most schools don’t cut them but they don’t get to play much from what I’ve seen. No guardrails about keeping it 50-50 in terms of boys and girls.

In Connecticut, girls' HS hockey is not sanctioned by the state high school association even though a number of schools have teams and there is a tournament. Of course if you're a high school-aged player from here who's serious about playing at the college level, you're almost certainly not playing at a public school.

That’s really cool. Completely understand that the high level players aren’t representing a public high school.

I would just like to see something here for 7th to 12th grade girls who are beginners or house level players or who want to stay local but all girls. My team is a U12/u14 girls team. We have one girl who is a senior in high school and essentially plays in practices and in house scrimmages with us. She started hockey in 10th grade …. There was literally no girls option for her. A boy could have been ushered into a league. Really not feasible for a girl.
