Ginding away- stop putting sand in my oil... Part 4

Re: Ginding away- stop putting sand in my oil... Part 4

Here's one... Ke$ha.

How in the heck does anyone buy her awful music? Give me the days of the 80s with pop singers that could sing a la Tiffany, Debbie Gibson and Madonna or even the 90s boy bands. She sounds like she went on a weeklong bender and wrote her nonsensical lyrics on a napkin. At least Lady Gaga has some talent.

Here's one that grinds me each year, no matter how careful we are:

landlords in college towns. For anyone reading here who will have a college student living in off-campus housing this fall, make sure you document everything and take pictures when you move in, and when you move out, insist that the landlord or property manager walk through the place with you!

The past three years now, they've been able to manufacture non-existent "damages" when it comes time to return the security deposit. The first time, he bailed twice on scheduled walkthroughs, and so we took extensive photos of everything before vacating. Then hetried to maintain we scratched a table, except that we were able to show him the picture and ask him what he thought a Small Claims court judge would think, and we got most of the money back.

Then last spring, a different landlord tried to charge us for damage caused by Irene! We took him to Small Claims Court, but he's dodged service for so long, the trial date isn't until this fall.

Now this spring a third landlord is withholding "only" half the deposit, and doesn't even specify what for or why!

Grr...

Word must get around among the local landlords that you'll sue, therefore the third landlord is trying to avoid giving specifics. ;)

which is against state law. it was annoying to have to read through it but at least the state gives clear guidelines on who is supposed to do what.

We never had an issue getting the deposit back, and our landlord probably had legit reasons to keep it. :p

Re: Ginding away- stop putting sand in my oil... Part 4

The same kind of stuff happens to military families that rent up where I live. The Army gives $1,000 on top of pay to use for living expenses. The landlords up here make rents $850 or more for crummy apartments just to get all they can and it squeezes out non-military families. Also, I know they'll do anything to try and keep the deposit and will invent "damage" a la FF said.

Re: Ginding away- stop putting sand in my oil... Part 4

This is the detail about this year's dispute that really grinds my gears.

The house lost power during the winter for three days. The baseboard radiator in one room froze. As soon as power was restored, the damage was noted immediately and the heat turned off right away so that the damaged pipe could be fixed. Vigilence saved the landlord hundreds of dollars in water damage.

He is claiming that we should pay for the repair to the radiator because the lease specifies that the house should be kept at a minimum of 55 degrees F. That doesn't happen without electricity to run the circulator pump.

I told him that if we can't reach a reasonable compromise, not only will we ask for that portion of the security deposit back, we'll also ask for a portion of the rent to be refunded too, since there was no heat provided during the winter for several days. On the other hand, if he sends half of the money that he withheld, we'll accept it merely to put an end to the matter.

It is these individual landlords that are the real pain. We dealt with a property management firm for the older child's off-campus housing, and they were fine, returned everything, no problems. It's these people who own summer houses who rent them out to students for the winter who seem to look at it as a license to steal.

Of course, many of the college students they deal with are probably slobs who cause more damage than the security deposit will cover, and we are somehow expected to "average out" for these others.

Punch the landlord in the face.

There were a couple articles that highlighted how smart she is, and how she knows how to maximize her value in order to make the most.

Now, how far she's fallen into the rabbit hole, no one but her and her family know about. But she doesn't seem to be pulling a Lindsey Lohan. If anything, she's just an reprise of Christina Agulara's "Xtina" phase.

Re: Ginding away- stop putting sand in my oil... Part 4

We just dropped Waste Management as our sanitation company. A month after we closed our account we get a bill for $58. Their claim is this bill is for hauling our bins away. Um... what???? You are charging us more than a full month of standard fees because we left your service after over 10 years of never having a late bill? And what if we don't pay it? Are you not going to haul away our trash anymore? That's the whole freakin' point!!!

Needless to say we contested, got some lame reason that didn't make much sense. They fought us on it but eventually decided to waive the fee and close the account.

She still sucks something fierce. She looks like she got off a coke bender and sounds like a cat after being kicked in its privates repeatedly. Of course autotune can clean anything up. Like I said, I may hate Celine Dion, but she's at least real unlike 80% of the so-called pop stars.

Related, know from experience: this goes for ANY rental. Mark down EVERYTHING. My first apt, a large chunk of my roomate's/my deposit was taken for some damage done, that we didn't commit, but also didn't document. It was a scratch on the door or something. Being our first rental, we didn't know any better. After that? I've never had a problem. The places I've lived in, I actually don't even expect any deposit back, due to the length I've lived in the rental and the normal wear-and-tear.

I may have commented on this before, but what really chaffes my butthole is the lack of elevator etiquette. How hard is it to stand off to the side so people can get off the elevator before you get on? I work in a building that has 33 floors. Do people really think no one is trying to get off on the ground floor? Nope, just going to stand at the doors as they open so I can rush into the elevator.

Even worse on commuter trains, let the people off first!

Dear Little Baby EoDS,

You just fed. Your diaper is clean. I hear no hiccups or even any crying. It's 4 in the ****ed morning. You have no reason to be this excited. Please go back to sleep.

Love,

Dad.

Re: Ginding away- stop putting sand in my oil... Part 4

A co-worker just went to my boss to try and get me in trouble for skipping a project meeting. The issue is I missed the meeting because I was working on a tangible part of the same project. Where do you want me to be? Sitting in a meeting where maybe 10% of the time I'd be involved or out on the floor building something critical for the same project where I'm 100% engaged? Can't have it both ways.
