Arbitrary deadlines. There was no reason for my project to be done today since it won't be needed for at least another week, maybe even 2. So I didn't assign it priority to get finished today and something more important bumped it down the list. Now I need to answer to why it isn't done. My answer will likely be that it isn't done because it's not needed anytime soon.

The people complaining about their packages not being delivered on time. Granted, I will let you complain if it's been more than a week. That sucks and somebody *'d up. But the people that say "why don't they just hire more people?!?" SierraTangoFoxtrotUniform!!! Listen, when the weather sucks planes get delayed and trucks don't move as fast. When the number of packages exceeds the amount the system can handle things get delayed. There's only so many trucks, so many planes, so many containers to load into, so many spots to put said containers, so many pieces of equipment, etc.

Drivers are out busting their * for 12-13-14+ hours a day. Rampers are pulling 12+ hour days in crappy weather. I know we get paid for it and all but, give us break we're trying here!

The cacophony of bodily noises in the office this week is astounding. I'm not sure I'm going to make it to the weekend without lashing out. Literally and/or figuratively.

Re: Ginding away- stop putting sand in my oil... Part 4

I probably could just say "Microsoft" and that would be enough.....

I really get annoyed at their "automatic updates" even more than at other ridiculous things they do. Over half of these "updates' are for features that we never ever use. what I hate the most is, unless I am really vigilant and notice the microscopic icon near the "shut down" button, how they will automatically install the updates before shutting down. I carry my notebook copmuter from site to site, and sometimes work until it is time to leave in a hurry. The other day i hit the "shut down" button just a little too quickly and grr: "do not unplug or power off your computer: installing updates 1 of 52." GD nonsense, it took nearly 20 f^king minutes. I carried my computer with me rather than wait for it to finish.

We also are "up"grading from office '07 to office '10 and as far as I can tell so far, there is no improvement of functionality at all. they merely rearranged where you find things. they also put in so many useless pre-loaded "styles" and "formats" that take up menu space while providing nothing whatsoever of value. don't they realize that most businesses already have their own "themes" when it comes to font, color, spacing, etc.? What makes them think they know better than anyone else?

Back in the early 1990s I could do things in Lotus 1-2-3 that I still can't do in excel, or use WordPerfect to accomplish things that I cannot yet do in MS Word. How they can be second-rate in any one particular software application yet come to dominate the software market the way they have is something I'll never understand and always regret.

Grr.

There are some efficiency gains in Office 2010, which are mostly unnoticed by the majority of users. I do prefer the 2007 interface layout, however; while the changes were mostly small, they were impactful to me as I had to then teach a whole host of others on how to make certain changes.

No matter what I do I cant get USCHO to go back to the default layout as opposed to mobile. I deleted bookmarks, logged out, switched it down on the link at the bottom of the page a million times...nothing.

Do you have other browsers? How does it look on them? Have you deleted your history, cookies and cache?

I tried it in Firefox and it was the same. I was hoping to avoid deleting history and cache cause there is no reason this should be happening.

vbulletin sucks :p

Re: Ginding away- stop putting sand in my oil... Part 4

Two followups on my "automatic update" snafu. Hopefully it may be of help to others to avoid similar problems.

First, I looked further and guess what: there is NO option that allows you to shut down without installing updates! (at least not in this version of the operating system.... I recall an earlier version did have that option. Weird that they'd remove it.)

However, I asked one of our IT staff about it, and he told me that you can choose "restart" instead and then when the screen goes black, press the "power" button and it will shut off. I tried it yesterday and it worked.

Second, because I travel so much, the hard drive undergoes some wear and tear. Even though I use a padded case, I'm lifting the computer up and down a lot, vertical to horizontal and back, quite a bit. I've had two hard drives replaced in the last three years. They are going to install a solid state hard drive over the weekend to reduce that problem. We'll see how it works in practice, in theory it sounds like a major league improvement!:)

On my laptop it's ok, but I can't get it to switch to default on my Kindle anymore. Did all the tricks, and nothing. It randomly switched me over around NYE and I haven't been able to switch back. And the mobile version sucks.

"I can never find anything on our web page"

did you try the "all site content" page that lists every single thing on the entire site and links to each page? that I sent a specific email about? or maybe the... search box?!??

effing idiot. whoever said there is no such thing as a stupid question did not know my co-workers (specifically, this one).

Mine happened when I changed the time zone in my settings...apparently being in the Pacific Time Zone means mobile while Central is normal ;)

Re: Ginding away- stop putting sand in my oil... Part 4

I got an email from my old mortgage company saying I had a statement available. So I attempt to log on to look at it, and got locked out of my account. I called customer service and explained that my account was locked. She asked for my loan number, which I didn't have. I explained what happened, and she said "once your loan is sold, you can't log on to access your old loan information anymore". I asked why I got an email about a statement that I can't see, and she said "oh, everyone got that email". oh, well, then. She said if I call back with my loan number, they can mail it out. um, shouldn't you automatically mail it out to those who cannot receive it electronically? I guess that is asking way too much.

another fun note: the system let me change my password while my account was locked. THAT seems really safe. :p

Actually, no, they shouldn't just mail out the form. Simply put, now that you're not their customer, they don't know if you've moved or still reside there. Sending it to that address could put your information security at risk, and lenders are very leary of doing that due to potential lawsuit and reputation risk.

That does make sense, but I would like to bad mouth them anyway, please. :p
