Geneseo Ice Knights Off - Season Thread (First off an apology)

Re: Geneseo Ice Knights Off - Season Thread (First off an apology)

Jason Lammers is, without a doubt, the best coach in Geneseo's hockey history. He instilled a level of work ethic and confidence in the team that neither of the other two coaches I've seen at Geneseo come close to matching."

QUOTE]

Best coach in Geneseo's history? I find it hard to argue that considering he was only there for four years. Paul Duffey was the face of Geneseo hockey since it was born. Brian Hills won a championship with all his own recruits. IMO, it is difficult to say that Lammers was the best of the short list of coaches in Geneseo history since he had the smallest impact.

Look at how the team and program stumbled after he left. Lammers winning the SUNYAC can be attributed mostly to Hills' recruits. Sure, he still has to 'coach' the players, but when you're given a pretty stacked roster and defending champion, your chances for success probably outweigh those for not succeeding.

Before criticizing Schultz too much or giving Lammers more credit than he deserves, also remember that Schultz was a big part of Hills recruting when he was an assistant. In fact, he had more of a recruiting and player impact in winning the 2006 SUNYAC than Lammers did.

My main point is that Schultz has been dealt a tough hand since he came on board. He didn't have a healthy, stacked program just handed to him like Lammers had. Now he has to deal with this Canadian grant problem. I think Schultz is the best thing going for that program right now.

Depends on how you define "greatest coach in school history":

Option 1 - (Which it sounds like what Josh is doing) basing his rating on coaching ability/potential and success in the short-term

Option 2 - (Which is what others seem to be doing) basing it more on total resume and big picture

I certainly can see what Josh is saying and if Lammers becomes a big-time hockey coach I'll certainly be happy to say he played and coached for us. With that said, I'm leaning towards option 2.

I think it comes down to having the words "in school history" on that phrase. If it was just "greatest coach" then yes you can make a case for anyone no matter how short their stay was. Once you throw the "in school history" you need to acknowledge what someone meant to the big picture of the program.

I agree. I was considering the 'in school history' part. He may be a good coach in terms of hockey knowledge/skills, but is not the coach who has had the most positive impact on the program (IMO).

Exactly, say John Wooden coached 1 game for Geneseo's basketball team.

Yes - he would have been the "greatest coach" to coach in Schrader Gym, but can't say he was the "greatest in school history" next to guys who were there for 20-30 years even if they didn't have his coaching talent.

The distinction is important. I was referring to "greatest coaching ability/potential" not "greatest impact on the program." There is no doubt Lammers has had the *least* impact on the program of any coach in Geneseo's history (worth noting, which only includes four coaches).

Having played against Duffy coached teams, and watching his teams over the years I can say Duffy did a fine job getting the most out of his players. He managed to keep Geneseo relavent for years even though the talent level was not always there. If they were down, it was never for long.

Throwing the "GOAT" tag on a coach that was only there one year, in the face of a man who built your program seems odd. If Jimbo Fisher wins a National Title with Florida State next year does that trump Bowden?

Re: Geneseo Ice Knights Off - Season Thread (First off an apology)

I don't see the full list of the All-SUNYAC teams (this was also referenced on the Oswego thread), but here are the players named to the teams from Geneseo based on this article:

http://www.geneseo.edu/athletics/sunyac-announces-ice-hockey-all-stars

Jake Yard (So) - D - 2nd Team
Dan Brown (Sr) - F - HM

Congrats to both of them.

I heard the International Student's Office and Admission's Office both received (dis?)honorable mentions as Canadian Student Recruiters.:p

(In case anyone missed it in Russell's article)

The winner of the most defensive defenseman award (as voted on by the SUNYAC coaches) was Jeff Macphee (SR)

I'd have to imagine this was a landslide. Congrats Jeff!

I remember talking to a Geneseo student Jeff's freshman year and he said that Macphee was going to be special. Turned out to be a pretty good prediction because he certainly was solid at the time and became one of the best over the course of his career.

Big physical defensemen, never out of position, and can skate. Don't see a whole lot of those in D-III nowadays. Usually players with that build are playing in D-I.

Congrats to Jeff. Look for Plattsburgh's Cory Adams have his name on or at the top of this list at the end of next season.

Re: Geneseo Ice Knights Off - Season Thread (First off an apology)

For what it's worth, former Geneseo's Most Eligible Bachelor and "Greatest Coach in Geneseo History" Jason Lammers' name is being thrown around on the DI board as a possible replacement for embattled Ohio State coach John Markell, who was relieved of coaching duties at the end of this season.

Lammers was hired as an assistant coach at Ohio State after his single season as head coach at Geneseo in which he led the Ice Knights to a SUNYAC championship. He is currently an assistant coach at Colorado College. Lammers was a four-year letterman defenseman at Geneseo, team captain for the 97-98 season, and won second-team all-SUNYAC accolades that same year.

Here is the aforementioned DI board thread: http://board.uscho.com/showthread.php?p=4704582&highlight=lammers

All of this amounts to... absolutely nothing right now, and Lammers probably won't be Ohio State's next coach. But that said, it wouldn't shock me at all to see Lammers heading a DI club sometime in the future. He's a Geneseo Hockey Personality to keep an eye on for sure.

Re: Geneseo Ice Knights Off - Season Thread (First off an apology)

On a sad note, Senior Dan Brown's father passed away last week from cancer. Condolences to Dan and his family.

Re: Geneseo Ice Knights Off - Season Thread (First off an apology)

It is one of the best SUNYAC schools. I think it better to finish in third or fourth place and have a degree that means something at the end of the day. You should compare where all the Geneseo players end up after graduation with the other SUNYAC schools. They should use this as a recruiting tool. I hope they get through this because they did not deserve this kind of trouble.

Only if they can skate.

If you break the rules, you deserve whatever trouble you get into...

I agree everyone should sleep in the bed they make, that said, sincere actions taken in good faith (by those student athletes who believed they were doing nothing wrong, and the recruiters who felt they were legitimately doing their jobs) do not necessarily warrant severe consequences. Which, I believe is supported by the fact, that other than declaring them ineligible for post-season play, the NCAA imposed no sanctions, they merely agreed to the self-imposed actions by the institutions. Do they deserve the right to benefit by an unintended breach of the rules, no they don't, but do they deserve to "get in trouble", no they don't, and IMO, they deserve and got justice and fairness.

I think the past few points have been fair. I don't believe any one or group of individuals deserved punishment but rules were broken and harsh but fair punishments were dealt and that was that. Besides having to be "careful" for the next couple years the punishment is essentially over and now life goes on. I'm excited for next season and hope Geneseo can build on their strong finish from last year.
