Checks is one thing (they can still serve a purpose), but I'm not sure that having a flip phone is something to brag about. :p

Motorolas (particularly the Razr) and Nokias have a reputation for being made of indestructium.

I'm not paying $600 or whatever it is for a goddam phone, since all I use my phone for is for TELEPHONE CALLS! And ok, a text ONCE in a while.

I don't particularly like admitting this, but texting (whether it's actual texting, or Tweeting) is virtually all I do with my phone now. :o Some 4G Internet browsing when I'm on the road, plus data for my Delta and Hilton apps when I'm at the airport and WiFi is being squirrely, but that's standard.

Also, the prices for a new smartphone lately are more like $800-1000, which is why I haven't upgraded in 3 years. It really is an outrage now.

Texting helps on road trips, etc. "We're meeting here at x time" sorta thing.

Re: Gear Grinding 9: I Need a Wine!

Here’s the thing that bothers me. Today’s headline is “Man Fractures Boy’s Skull for Disrespecting the National Anthem” (actual headline) and I already know that there are people among my colleagues, friends, and family who will judge the actors not based on the horrifying facts, but on the racial identities of both man and boy, and on what The Donald might tweet about them, and on the exact nature and depth of the perceived disrespect. So we can’t even talk about it.

Re: Gear Grinding 9: I Need a Wine!

Just over $2k spent in last week on my 9 year old dog and we still don’t have answers. Hoping the tests coming back later this week have answers.

Re: Gear Grinding 9: I Need a Wine!

Being told by the in house chaplain (glorified counselor) at Tyson that "you're not a cis female, so I don't think you can do it" when I asked for a letter of reference for an internship. Joke's clearly on her; Monday, I got a call saying I got the internship.

I also believe this destroys 2.5 years of trust I built up with her.

Wait, what would that have to do with an internship?

Also, congrats on the internship!

Was she telling you "you shouldn't be allowed to do it, I'm not giving you a reference" or was she warning you "the people around here are bigoted AF so don't be surprised if they mistreat you"?

The former, yeah, she should be dead to you. The latter could just be a person on your side (hell, on the side of humanity!) delivering the unsurprising news that much of the world is still a bigoted pigsty of sh-t-fer-brains who've jammed a crucifix up their as-s.

The internship is with Every Woman's Place; it's a shelter for sexual assault, domestic violence, and human trafficking victims. Only women are allowed to stay there, but they serve men who are victims too. This chaplain told me that because I am not a cis female, I would not be fit for such an internship. Which is odd, because my new supervisor says being trans is not an issue for them, that the staff welcomes me, and as long as I keep learning, working hard, and asking the right questions, I won't have any issue with them.

I also believe this makes my place of employment that much more hostile of a work environment. The chaplain is supposed to be someone employees can go to if they have issues that need addressing. I only have two friends on the floor there, along with three supervisors who are attempting to learn and understand. This chaplain also led me to believe she wasn't like the rest of the people on the floor, that she was making an effort and improving. Today proves she wasn't, and I admit I'm struggling with this.

Cis, trans, whatever. You're a female now. The Chaplain needs some educating. It's not how you got there, it's what you are NOW.

I always was a girl. Either way, she'll be branded with "because you're not cis" and it'll be difficult, but I don't have to speak with her ever again.

Not meaning to pry, but it’s odd to me to hear about a workplace that has a chaplain. What is the nature of the job?

My paid job is Tyson Foods in Zeeland, MI. I asked the chaplain (basically a counselor) to write a letter of reference for me for Every Woman's Place, a domestic violence/sexual assault/human trafficking women's shelter that I interviewed at for an internship.
