Re: Gear Grinding 6: I'm So Over This.

If you are one to leave space between the car in front of you and the car behind you, and both those cars happen to move and new cars come in and box you in....smash away. I think that's the main issue here.

I always try and leave room so I can get out, but there were times that even my lil' ol' Jeep had some difficulty getting out b/c of arseholes.

Re: Gear Grinding 6: I'm So Over This.

My director's admin has taken to immediately replying to all his meeting requests as "tentative," so I have no idea what meetings he's actually planning to attend (mine or anyone else's). Grrrrrr.

This. I have a coworker who refuses to reply at all to meetings, so I'm in the same boat. She'll accept them, but not send a reply letting me know she's done so. Never know which one she plans to show up to. Drives me insane.

Do you use Outlook? If so, you should get a notice of acceptance or decline. If not, check your settings.

The person accepting or declining can choose not to allow the system to send the acceptance/decline decision. While sending notifications are the default options, it's very easy to not send them.

however, what you can do, assuming this is not a person who's often double booked, just look at their calendar. While you likely won't see what it says, you will see block of time available and free. If your meeting time was free before and shows as busy now, then you can be fairly certain she'll attend your meeting. It's a pain and more work for you, but it's something you can do.

Or just set the meetings and proceed without planning for her involvement. Minimize her presence there and that should scream loudly to anyone paying attention.

Re: Gear Grinding 6: I'm So Over This.

So-called "upgrades" that do nothing whatsoever to enhance software functionality, they are purely cosmetic (and an excuse to charge more money....).

Re: Gear Grinding 6: I'm So Over This.

Kinda the opposite of what was discussed yesterday, the parkers in front of my building are amazingly taking up as much room as they can with as few cars as possible. It's almost perfect, each gap just too small for another car.

On my outlook, even if the response isn't sent, you go look at the status of all invitees and you can see all responses.

Our version of outlook has 3 choices: accept, decline, and tentative. If he person picks tentative, it shows up that way on their calendar and on the list of invitees, so there's no way to know. This particular person probably gets invited to 50 meetings per week, so there is never any free time on his calendar, period. Tou You just have to pick a time when he's tentatively scheduled, wait for his tentative acceptance, then show up to the meeting and hope for the best.

I actually could just jump the curb, given my small wheelbase and not caring about jumping the curb. If I had a larger vehicle...things may have been different.

To my point, it was still difficult, but at least I had a way out.

So you chose not to be ********? I knew you were a good guy.

Re: Gear Grinding 6: I'm So Over This.

You know what grinds my gears, just about as much as left lane hogs? People who block side streets while waiting for a stop sign or a traffic signal. They are the sole cause of gridlock.

Re: Gear Grinding 6: I'm So Over This.

Back in 2012 I was involved in a project to update how one of our applications imported some data from our corp record keeping system, correcting a known vulnerability. Another application, older than the one that was fixed, also had some work done to it so that it would limit the exposure to the vulnerability though due to some logic/design issues it couldn't be completely fixed. My new manager keeps asking me for a write up in how the fixed application was impacted by an issue that occurred Tuesday, the very vulnerability we accounted for back in 2012. she simply will not accept the fact that one of the applications was completely fixed while the other was only patched so as to limit the damage. She's turned me into a scratched record, having to repeat myself over and over again. (Fixed App) had no issues. (Patched App) was the only application impacted and it was limited in scope because of the 2012 project.

Does management ever accept any bad news?

The one I just ADORE  is when they start requesting 11th hour changes for an upcoming release, completely ignoring basic Agile concepts.

This isn't refusing to accept bad news - she's refusing to accept GOOD news! The application she's harping on is the one that handled the bad situation perfectly, didn't even stumble for a minute when it all happened.

Executive: "But I thought we adopted this Agile, or Fragile, or Agility, or whatever because we don't have to wait three months for a new version? We can just request stuff whenever and you guys get it done."

:D

Re: Gear Grinding 6: I'm So Over This.

Driving to work, still haven't left my development, and I come up behind a guy in a newer Chevy Silverado (it was red, would that make it a Redderado?) (sorry.), he's going about 15MPH and swerving back and forth across the road. I couldn't tell if he was talking on his phone or drunk. Truthfully, I'm thinking drunk. He ends up turning to go north out of the development, just as I have to do, and he's going 45 in the 55, again with the swerve. I really think this guy was three sheets to the wind. Any rate, I get around him when the road widens for an extra lane each direction only to end up behind a guy who decided to go 50 in the left lane while the right lane was busy as all hell. It kept happening the whole way to the office today, like every fifth driver in this state woke up with a partial lobotomy that targeted their driving knowledge. Why do people not understand the purpose of the left lane? Especially during rush hour!

Did you call him in?
