Re: Games of 12/2 - The cast of Hamilton hates chickens! Are Bears for the Birds?

This is a very interesting year so far

Cortland is not awful, but Middlebury is?
Hamilton is good!
and Norwich is not as off as everyone thinks

It's going to be fun come March this year

Re: Games of 12/2 - The cast of Hamilton hates chickens! Are Bears for the Birds?

With all due respect (don't you just hate when someone says that), UMB....are they really that good?

5-3-1

Their 5 wins,
Curry - who just lost 0-11 to Endicott
UMass Dartmouth - ......
Castleton .... 3-6-1 (NCAA 1-6-1) (wins over Wentworth, St.A, and St.Mikes)
Daniel Webster 1-9-0 with their lone win over Southern Maine
Utica - And Utica ...the same team who just lost to Cortland who is 2-3 NC with wins over Fredonia and Plymouth State.
Tie against Morrisville - who is 1-7-2 and last in the SUNYAC and lone win over Fredonia.

Loss to:
Skidmore (decent)
Southern Maine
and Norwich....

I am not saying Norwich isn't better than last year, but my gosh it's one game. People jumping back on the bandwagon (which was never that far of a jump anyways) faster than Hillary can delete emails.....what's next? A win over Babson and we start securing a hotel room in Utica?? Take Oswego to the shed, and I'll start calling them a contender. And then they come to Plattsburgh the following weekend, a team that if their goaltending gets fixed (AKA Davies becomes the #1, and the defense gets more mature), is a much much dangerous team. And then a trip to Middlebury, who even if are 0-12 by then...it's still Middlebury / Norwich. I understand getting excited....but its one game. Never get to high on your wins, and never get low on your losses.

I will only comment on Cortland for now....

It's amazing what Canadians will do to your team (go figure). 12 freshman (50% foreign), 13 new players (Plattsburgh transfer). 6 of the top 8 scorers are Freshman. I am not sure they are SUNYAC Championship contenders, but I will be surprised if Cortland is not in the SUNYAC playoffs. Their blow out loss to Geneseo could be viewed as more of a growing pain, much like Plattsburgh is dealing with right now. Give these guys a year to gel, and if they can pull in another recruiting class.....

Never get to high on your wins, and never get low on your losses.

As a player, absolutely true. As a fan? That's what makes it fun. I have a tendency to resort to coach speak, too, "It's only one game," "Focus on the next one," etc. But, I'm not a coach, I'm just an anonymous dude on a messenge board. So I'm going to celebrate my team's wins with enthusiasm.

UMB lost a lot of good players from last year's squad. They've still got talent for sure. Colin Larkin is probably the best player in the NEHC and should be an All-American.

Goaltending hasn't been quite what it was from the guy they had last year that graduated.

It's not like this is UNE we're enthused about. It's Norwich, the team with multiple national titles and a dozen plus final (not frozen) fours on their resume. You're the buffoon, not us, if you don't understand the situation. I've made a number of "bandwagon" type posts this week, because I was more or less alone (not completely) last year trying to get everyone to pump the brakes on their "we've been passed by" and "we'll never compete consistently again" talk. Last year's team, when fully healthy, took the Cardinals behind the woodshed. My eyes tell me this team is much improved from last year's version, so I'm excited for a return to form for the program after one down year. Maybe I'm wrong and they aren't very good, but I doubt it

Do me a favor, go to the store and buy the next size up pair of panties. Obviously yours are way too tight. Please, oh please tell me how beating a mediocre UMB team (as shown by their results) and a Murray-less Babson team means anything other than you beat two pedestrian teams? Plattsburgh just looked like a DI team against Potsdam Friday night scoring 6 straight unanswered goals, must be they're back too right? I mean "my eyes told me so". I guess I should start reserving my room in Utica too...

Norwich has not been so much passed by, but caught up to. It's life. For years Plattsburgh dominated the SUNYAC while other teams put their resources in anything but their hockey programs. Plattsburgh used their FA packages, Canadian pipeline, and location to attract players that current day SUNYAC schools are able to attract with their new rinks/facilities, upgraded programs, higher resourced coaching staffs ect ect. When people come to the reality that there are now other "strong" programs in the league and you're going to have some more losses than usual, the quicker the pain will go away when you lose to the Skidmore's, UNE's, and Castleton's....

Last year's team, when fully healthy, took the Cardinals behind the woodshed.
Umm sure...shots on goal 27 - 27, was pretty even other than the 3rd period when the goalie, who is currently sitting behind a freshman started, couldn't stop a beach ball like this year. But Hey, congrats if it makes you feel good. You were that kid who always picked the slowest, weakest opponent and got the "W" to make you feel better too right? At least you didn't have to pull your goalie with :54 seconds left to break up a shut out this time...

Okay Don Cherry, I didn't realize you were an internet hockey expert. Once again, you're getting excited over beating a pedestrian (at best) UMB team and Murray-Less Babson team. No one is saying a win isn't good. It sure beats a loss. But just as Derek point out, this IS NOT the same UMB team as last. Yes they have one of the best players not only in the league but outside of maybe Collins, the best hands in DIII (East). But the team is not the same. Lost 3 of their top 4 in points, and both goaltenders....yet you want to act like beating UMB 2016-2017 is the same as 2015-2016, its not.

No one is saying Norwich is a scrub, their not. We had people calling for answers after the Skidmore loss...does it look that bad now? No. Again, bandwagon jumpers. Off the bandwagon after a Skidmore loss, back on with a UMB win. Like I said, faster than Hillary can delete emails. But getting excited over beating UMB is not the same as years past. Sure its still good, but those are games (when you actually look at what UMB is this year) Norwich SHOULD win.

And if and when Norwich loses/ties to another unranked/unpopular team, the bandwagon door will open once again. Norwich was never far out of a contender last year, they simply had a tough time in close games (2-4-2 in 1 goal games), this year they are finishing their comebacks (much like a few years ago).

As I said, if they can go 4-0 to start next semester, then you have something. If they go 2-2 it will be like the sky is falling again, bank it.

And by the way, this was never an attack on you about being a bandwagon jumper....but if you want to take it that way be my guest. Just as you pointed out last year to "pump the breaks" on the downward spiral, "pumping the breaks" on thinking your stock is now thru the roof works the same. I don't think Norwich has played an NCAA Tournament caliber team yet this year, so how you can judge how "good" your team is .....kind of hard....

Haha, too many gems in there to respond to them individually, especially on this tiny mobile screen. Again, my point is that an historically elite program, after a "down" year plagued by injuries, appears to be "back", with an 8-1-1 start to the season. Coming into the year, UMB and Babson were the "teams to beat" for Norwich to retake their place atop the conference. After a sweep, I think the fan base is excited about the prospects for the remainder of the year.

Your opinion is one thing. The fact is, on this board and in conversation, many people asked the question as to whether or not Norwich could "catch" UMB and Babson. I found that question absurd, based on the overall status of the program.

My post, while it certainly seemed personal, was not necessarily intended as such. It was more a reaction to your dismissive statements of a program which, in my opinion, on has earned a little bit more respect.

Finally, I prefer my panties tight. It helps when I jog.

Re: Games of 12/2 - The cast of Hamilton hates chickens! Are Bears for the Birds?

With tongue in cheek here, you accusing anyone of having panties too tight and being an Internet hockey expert are two of the most ironic things ever posted on this board.

I'll admit when I'm being a bit too ridiculous, but you should do some self-reflection as well. At the end of the day, a simple skim through these pages will tell you 100% of posters occasionally tighten their panties too often, and frequently think they're hockey experts. 100%.

And my point is, what is "back"? Back to the top of the Conference? Okay sure, maybe. Back to being above UMB/Babson (with all of their loses yea probably, again..congrats)...Back to the Kurtis Mclean / Keith Aucoin DIII Dominating program...jury is still WAY out.

People are judging the season on beating a mediocre UMB team and a Murray-Less Babson team.

Coming into the year, UMB and Babson were the "teams to beat" for Norwich to retake their place atop the conference. After a sweep, I think the fan base is excited about the prospects for the remainder of the year.

Based on last years results. Anyone who looked at what UMB loss, and knowing Murray was gone at Babson, combined with what Norwich was bringing back (healthy) would be almost a fool to think Norwich wouldn't be competing ahead of those two. And yes, I realize where UMB was picked at the start of the season, but 90% of the time pre-season polls are based on last years results, not what you have the upcoming season (I've addressed this before).

Again, if you want to be excited about being a top the NEHC, cool! But that's not Norwich. Just like Plattsburgh, Oswego, SNC, and probably Adrian now...goals are set higher. There is a reason why the SUNYAC Championship banners at the Stafford aren't much bigger than a piece of paper. So saying Norwich is "back" to that National standard with wins over a mediocre UMB team and Murray-Less Babson team is a little premature.

Your opinion is one thing. The fact is, on this board and in conversation, many people asked the question as to whether or not Norwich could "catch" UMB and Babson. I found that question absurd, based on the overall status of the program.

It is WAY beyond absurd to even think Norwich has been "passed", and that's my exact point. I am right with you 100%. Those same ones who were claiming that, are the first ones to jump back on the bandwagon now that Norwich has beaten a couple "good/great" teams from last year (key word last year). There is no passing Norwich, or any of the historic strong programs (except maybe Middlebury who has more issues that a coach). Other teams have simply caught up. Having said that, people need to come to the realization that Norwich is no longer head and shoulders above everyone in their conference and you're going to get a loss here and there. Stay the ship, stay the course. Don't get too down on the loss, and don't get too high on the wins... Maybe is the coach in me and Coach Cliche 101, but I am not putting Norwich on the pedestal of DIII royalty until they've actually played someone. Skidmore was probably the best competition they've faced and how did that go? A tie with Endicott (okay I know they are not a cellar dweller but I wouldn't call them a contender, they did lose to Salve and Nichols) and an OT winner over 0-6 Middlebury....As I said, if and when Norwich shows something against higher caliber teams, I will say they are back to a DIII Powerhouse. They have yet to do it....

With all due respect, its somewhat like a Plattsburgh fan getting all excited and saying "we're back" after a 6-2 win over Potsdam. I mean Potsdam beat St.Mikes (something UMB couldn't do), beat Morisville (something UMB couldn't do) swap wins and ties with Castleton....so that must mean UMB is pretty close to the same level as Potsdam, but you don't see Cardinal fans getting all gitty over beating Potsdam.....

My post, while it certainly seemed personal, was not necessarily intended as such. It was more a reaction to your dismissive statements of a program which, in my opinion, on has earned a little bit more respect.

Respect for what? All the respect in the world doesn't change the results on the ice. Should we then give NCAA bids based on past performance? I am not dismissing Norwich. It's a "pump the breaks" until Norwich plays and beats someone. Saying UMB and Babson "are" someone is more of a discredit to the Norwich program. Those are teams (with the current teams roster and make up) SHOULD beat. Put a 6-2 whipping on Oswego in December...come to the Stafford and put a 6-2 shelling on Plattsbugh the following weekend (with Davies in net please god) and then head to Middlebury and do the same...maybe. 3-1 to start the semester will raise eyebrows (assuming the skate with Oswego). If they go 2-2.... Yes I have respect for most of the Norwich program. But my lack of respect has ZERO to do with the kids who put it out there every game on the ice. Some cheap stuff in years past, but that's hockey. This is nothing to do with respect, more laughter when people get their panties in a bunch when someone says "hey your team might not be as good as they seem" or "your team is just fine, suck it up and keep the course".....and then watching people bounce back and forth on and off the bandwagon.

People also forget that just because you don't think your team is going to win a National Championship and you can acknowledge flaws and or issues with your team, doesn't make you NOT a fan. I am a realists. Always have been. Tell it like it is, now how I hope it is or think it might be. I don't simply look at the score board and base my judgement off of a goal difference.

Re: Games of 12/2 - The cast of Hamilton hates chickens! Are Bears for the Birds?

Plattsburgh's season boils down to one game.

Williams

Williams means jack diddly to Plattsburgh this year...They will end with too many SUNYAC loses to matter for a Pool C bid, unless some miracle Dak Prescott-ish player is under the Christmas tree. I will be shocked if they finish Top 3 this year. They might knock off someone in the playoffs, but I'm not sold.

If you're talking last year, while Williams was a big part, the SOS argument (because too many of Plattsburgh's opponents played DII teams which dropped their SOS below comparison) didn't help. Had we counted those DII games, Plattsburgh could have been in the Tournament, no matter what happened in the Williams game. Then again when you lose like they did to Geneseo, they didn't deserve it. I was also yelled at on the Plattsburgh Facebook page because I said 2 weeks prior to the Selection Show Plattsburgh was out and why after being told "Plattsburgh was a lock" lol. And when they didn't get in, and tried to explain why, someone got ButtHurt that someone was talking bad about his Cardinals. It is what it is. Some people just can't open their eyes to the game of hockey, and strictly focus on one team and one team only. I've told it like I see it for years. No PC, Kumbiyah, Here's a Trophy way around it...
