8.3 Penalties Per Team called on opening night.....

I don't want to hear the "they're finally calling things" bullcrap some people have tried on other boards. This is not hockey. When you're in the box on average for nearly an entire period, it's not hockey. Just as someone else said elsewhere, if they want to create more offense start putting regulations on goaltender pads. Having teams play 5 on 4 takes away from the 5 on 5 team game that is hockey IMO. Teams should be deciding the game, not special teams. I am all for the obvious calls, but this is crazy.

End of rant Night #1...

15 minors called here tonight. I actually expected more.

12 minors in Northfield tonight. Wasn't as bad as the scrimmage.

I'm going to respectfully disagree. Right now, Hockey is like football, where you could call Holding on just about every play if you wanted. But I think if the refs start calling things, it'll take a month or two, but those bad habits will start to go away.

Your guy is about to get into an open passing lane? Either beat him to the puck with your skates (rather than slow him up with your hands) or get there to deliver a check to separate him from the puck once he has it. Or if you're on offense and your puck-carrying teammates about to get checked, your focus should be on getting the loose puck yourself, not on getting in the defender's way to avoid the check ever being given (And perhaps try to bait him into an Interference penalty, too).

If players can get through their thick skulls (they are supposed to be bright college students, right?) that they can't put a free hand in the guy or run into someone not carrying the puck, I think you'all eventually find that the game has MORE flow to it.

But hey, that's my opinion. You're entitled to yours.

SNC built a 5-0 lead after one and beat Marian 6-0

21 penalties called in all. SNC 1-12 on the pp, Sabres 0-7.

Same two teams tonight but in FDL

Only got to watch 2 periods of the Oswego game and yes a few ticky tacky penalties called

You're going to see it all year unless teams start adjusting. Norwich went from 12 minors in the exhibition to just four last night. Pretty big improvement.

yes discipline will win a few games at the start of this season for sure, maybe the refs will let up a little as they get an earfull as the season progresses.

The UVM-Michigan game last night featured a reasonable 14 total minors, and most of those were not Obstruction-Restraining type calls. There was 1 Hold, 1 Hook, 1 Interference, and Michigan took 3 straight tripping penalties in the 3rd (one of which even left the Vermonters sitting around me wondering what game the ref was watching...). The majority of the penalties were Slashing, High-sticking, Charging, or Too Many Men. The stuff that's being called just as it always has.

I thought the game had a pretty good flow for the first 2 periods, and the differences were the quick crisp passing of UVM, their ability to disrupt Michigan in the Neutral Zone, and a few spectacular saves by the Lekkas in net for the Catamounts

So I think some DI teams have already started making significant adjustments to the way the rule is being implemented. I think most DIII teams should be able to do the same, and I still stand by my belief that the game will benefit from this in the long run.

Nonsense. Just like last time...a month from now everything will be back to "normal." It's basic psychology and systems analysis.
