Game of Thrones, Season V: Arya Ready?

Re: Game of Thrones, Season V: Arya Ready?

Usually when someone gets their head chopped off, they just show it. The fall of Stannis did seem awfully quick though. Things went bad. Fast.

Re: Game of Thrones, Season V: Arya Ready?

What purpose would Stannis living serve? His army's smashed or deserted, his family dead, his witch abandoned him. He risked everything and lost. Sure, he could be alive, but he's certainly not relevant.

He's not relevant because we don't know the manner in which he might be relevant. He still has the name Baratheon, which will carry some weight in some circles in Westeros.

Especially since the rest with the name don't actually have any Baratheon blood in their veins.

But I don't know why Brienne would essentially pardon him. Anyone have ideas there? I can see reasons why the writers would want Stannis, for future plot, but how do they explain why Brienne didn't do it. I'm not against the idea of it, but it would be nice to know what Brienne's reasoning would be.

I think it'll have something to do with Stannis telling her to do her duty, not cowering away from fate, fighting against the inevitable or trying to talk his way out of it. Given the honor bound nature of Brienne, that could have saved Stannis.

Ok, I suppose. I do think it would be really odd if he is dead, and they didn't show it. I am just struggling with the reasoning behind it.

I do like the theory that Melisandre did have to sacrifice Shireen, but not because of Stannis, but to save Jon instead. So, that is why Stannis failed.

Also,

Robb Stark was killed and he and his direwolf were physically joined. They sewed Grey Wind's head onto Robb's body.
Jon Snow was killed and he and his direwolf are spiritually joined. Jon wargs into Ghost.

That would be some sweet foreshadowing right there.

Have you read the books? I've seen an idea that makes pretty good sense if you're familiar with the books.

I'm at about 70% of Feast.

Well then, this shouldn't be a spoiler for you:
He could take over the Lady Stoneheart role that's missing from the TV show as leader of the Brotherhood Without Banners (since what bannermen does he have now?). He'll be bent on revenge if he is alive and that'd be pretty much his only play.

Re: Game of Thrones, Season V: Arya Ready?

He pulled a Ned. Did the right thing, but did it oblivious to those that surround him.

The Starks only survived this long historically through isolationism in the North, I'd guess, because they've been waves of incompetence any time they touch anyone.

I wouldn't say that's entirely true. Robb Stark was doing a dandy job in his war until Roose Bolton and Walder Frey betrayed him.

And Eddard had a huge role in Robert's rebellion. He could have been on the throne, had he wanted it.

Re: Game of Thrones, Season V: Arya Ready?

The Starks, being isolated and having roots from the beginnings of time in the North, are just too trusting, honorable and moral to consider the machinations of others around them who just aren't quite so noble.

They're like the hicks out for their first visit to the big city. Never ends well.

Until he dipped his wick in the wrong pot and did "the right thing"

Maybe naivete instead of incompetence.

Re: Game of Thrones, Season V: Arya Ready?

Okay, tough to type this with one hand while I feed eods jr, but here goes:

Jon receives funeral pyre.

Melisandre does her thing.

Jon comes out of pyre alive and unscathed, a la Dany.

Somehow salt is involved.

Boom, Jon Targaryen/Azor Ahai is (re)born of salt and smoke.
