Game of Thrones, Season V: Arya Ready?

Re: Game of Thrones, Season V: Arya Ready?

Ok, so why did Jon and the wildlings have to march back to the tunnel from the north, when they sailed north on Stannis' ships, on the sea, around the wall, in the first place?

Stannis' men drop them off short in a hurry to get his ships back to him?

I was wondering the same. About the only answer I have is just for the sake of telling a story on TV, to create a semi-tensious scene for Ser Alliser to admit Jon and the Wildings south of the Wall.

Re: Game of Thrones, Season V: Arya Ready?

The obvious answer is that they couldn't get Wun Wun onto the ship, and he started getting hypothermia swimming in that icy water. And Wun Wun is way too awesome to abandon.

While thrilled with the way episode 9 ended, it was heart-wrenching to witness the previous scene.

I cannot imagine Davos functioning in the same capacity with Stannis anymore. He either dies on the way back to Castle Black, brings back evidence that the Flaming Sword really isn't legitimate - thereby breaking Mellisandre's hold on Stannis - or finds a way to do what Stannis' previous maester died trying to do.

Re: Game of Thrones, Season V: Arya Ready?

Dorne did not go as I expected. Doran must have something up his sleeve, since I can't believe that having Tristane on the small council will be enough to make Dorne happy.
Doran is a tired prince with an incurable condition that may kill him - and wants peace for his country. I don't think he has any greater ambitions in mind because he may not live long enough to see them fulfilled. He (mistakenly?) believes he can't keep Jaime captive and incur the wrath of King's Landing, nor of course execute him because of the same (and, well, because Myrcella). So his only option is to let him return, and take the princess with him to complete his mission. To keep both her and her betrothed happy, Tristane gets to go with her. And since Tristane is a nobleman in his own right, have Jamie convince Tommen to seat him on the small council. Dorne thereby remains "in the game" for years hence. Since Ellaria really has no leverage here (she has been TWICE forgiven for her near-treason by Martell), she doesn't really have any say.

The last scene was pretty good, been waiting for that for a long time. I loved the look on Tyrion's face. Looks like Jorah has worked his way back into Dany's good graces. But overall, I'm really confused about the Sons of Harpy. We have been led to believe that they wanted the fighting pits back open. Well, they're open, and they're taking their attack to the next level. So, what are the Sons' real goal, and who is behind them?

Lots of gold, and military backing from about half a dozen city-states around Slaver's Bay.

Lots of good stuff in that episode. I'll have to digest it a bit.

I will say that I'm on the side of the argument that we haven't seen the last of Jon Snow. Warging into Ghost + Melisandre will end up bringing him back. And without his vows, because his watch will have then ended.

Re: Game of Thrones, Season V: Arya Ready?

Depending upon the outcome of John Snow, there are no good guys left as main players in The Seven Kingdoms (can't really count Dorne as part of the kingdom, Brienne as a main player, or Sansa either until she actually starts to act like one).

I'm curious to know if Arya's condition is permanent or just a hard learned lesson that will resolve itself once/if she's able to truly become nobody. Does Jaqen H'Gar face appearing upon a second person mean that his body died long ago and that what we see is just his default mask? Same question might then apply to the blonde girl who's been chiding Arya all season long. Perhaps a "first death" is required to become a Many Faced Man.

They didn't show it, but did Reek and Sansa leap into a river, a bed of snow or hay? I have to assume they didn't jump to their deaths, it wouldn't fit the personality of either character.

Cersei Lannister learned nothing from her time in the High Sparrow's cells other than names to add to her enemey's list. Qyburn and Frankenstein's monster saw to that. And something tells me he's not like Young Frankenstein's monster at all.

As soon as the kiss came, it was obvious Myrcella was down for the count. Sadly, that was far too predictable. The only question is whether or not the Sand Snakes will face any retribution upon simple suspicion or walk away without true consequence.

Re: Game of Thrones, Season V: Arya Ready?

I think Sansa and Reek made the jump into the snow beds. It's ambiguous whether they survive or not at this point. It was either:
A) Stay and face certain death (or worse)
B) Jump and have a shot at escaping

Re: Game of Thrones, Season V: Arya Ready?

Oh yeah, and Cersei's story is going to go one of two ways:
A) Scorched earth
B) Total change in character broken by the humiliation and loss of her second child

If I was a betting man, I'm guessing A.

Re: Game of Thrones, Season V: Arya Ready?

Option A it is. Given the type of person Cersei is, she's incapable of change.

Re: Game of Thrones, Season V: Arya Ready?

Also, how can the reunion of Varys and Tyrion not be considered an awesome moment? That short scene was great!

Re: Game of Thrones, Season V: Arya Ready?

But did Brienne actually dispatch Stannis? The way they cut from that was a classic misdirection.
