Future Frozen Four Sites

Not anymore. The enabling legislation was killed by a single vote in the VA Senate.

That being said, I personally don't think the proposed move to Alexandria, VA made much business sense. For all of the downtown DC problems, CapOne is immediately proximate to five subway lines that bring droves of fans in from MD and VA. The proposed new arena would have been served by only one. Basically, ownership would have effectively cutoff a goodly chunk of the Caps and Wizards Maryland fan bases.

I agree that the move to VA would have made no sense from a business POV, but Potomac Yard is served by two lines, yellow and blue. They are on the same set of tracks. The Gallery Place stop is served by three lines on two sets of tracks, red, green, and yellow. If you count Metro Center which is not far away, then all six lines are accessible to the Capital One Arena.

It is high time to bring the FF back to DC in any case.

Agree. I didn't know about the vote to kill the plan. I'm glad it happened. My best friend from college lives in Mclean, VA, and when I go down to visit him and his wife, we usually take in a Caps game. Hop the Orange line at West Falls Church and within 30 minutes, we're at Metro Center to walk to the Arena. Super simple.

There are 300k NFL fans here for the draft who disagree with you.

I was watching clips of those fans of teams that traveled for it and remarked that most of them are deranged people. It made me wonder what kind of people dress and act that way. They are not normal to go to those extremes.

We're seriously justifying a FF in Albany? That arena is a dump. It was not significantly upgraded recently, the seats are decades old and uncomfortable, the concourse is overcrowded and has no bathrooms - they're all in the basement. The videoboard is tiny and it only holds 15K. This should not even be a consideration for anything beyond a regional.

Who's pushing for Albany? I'm confused.

Tampa was fine, but not as good as it's made out to be by some. I'd much prefer Nashville over that.

Tampa is great. Now go away. :-)

As for Nashville, many of us have called for that. But I keep hearing Nashville hasn't actually put in a bid. Unless they do, we can all wish all we want...

Earlier in the thread, someone was justifying Albany as a potential option. Absurd.

Sorry, I don't agree on Tampa. I didn't hate it, I didn't love it. It was fine. An overall average city, not much open around the arena afterwards. The whole area is sprawled and spread out. The channel area around the arena was really nice. It was overall very OK.

Many others in my group who have been feel similar. A couple of friends love it, no one universally hated it. I think there's a bit of a bubble here of people who love it for one reason or another.

I know Nashville hasn't bid, but it's a significantly better version of what folks here like about Tampa without the drawbacks.

Albany will be hosting a regional in 2026, but you're correct that its too small host a Frozen Four. From the 2027 and 2028 NCAA DIVISION I MEN’S ICE HOCKEY CHAMPIONSHIP SPORTS SPECIFIC INFORMATION bid packet:

1. Conditions and Availability.
b. The facility must be modern, clean and accessible and must have at least 17,000 seats. Playing conditions must meet NCAA regulations and must be of championship caliber.

Looking at current NHL Arena capacities it looks like 29 qualify, with only the Prudential Center (New Jersey), Canada Life Centre (Winnipeg) and Mullett Arena (Arizona) too small. Of other arenas able to make ice you have:
Tulsa - BOK Center
Glendale - Desert Diamond Arena
Columbus - Value City Arena
Portland (OR) - Moda Center
Cleveland - Rocket Mortgage FieldHouse

also these, but I have no idea if they can still make ice:
Phoenix - US Airways Center
Uniondale - Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum
North Little Rock -Simmons Bank Arena
Atlanta - State Farm Arena
Houston - Toyota Center
East Rutherford - Meadowlands Arena
Greensboro - Greensboro Coliseum

The Barclays Center (Brooklyn), along with it's sight line issues, doesn't meet the NCAA seating requirement. Neither does Fiserv Forum (Milwaukee).

I would love to see it in the Phoenix area, but I doubt it would happen until the Coyotes build that proposed arena in north Phoenix. The Glendale arena is decent, and has a lot around the area. The fact the 'Yotes couldn't make it work is more an indictment of location compared to fan base plus shitty ownership than anything.

Exactly. Even before COVID, Detroit was having trouble selling tickets.

Anecdotally it feels like interest in live sports attendance, including college hockey, is up overall post-Covid. Not sure if that'd affect things with Detroit as a candidate, but that plus the generally increasing positive spin on the city's safety, and the NFL draft being there this year, seems to bode well for it.

those were tourists who trucked in? or locals?

About 50-50. Many fans were not really local but were from rural Michigan or Ohio. Also fans of each NFL team, so a mix. The local TV stations interviewed quite a few of them and most were very pleasantly surprised by what they experienced. You all of course are entitled to believe whatever you want. I mean we all know the earth is flat.

I must be one of the few New Englanders who is a fan of Detroit. Good Greek food, the Tigers stadium is not a dump like Fenway, Ford museum, Motown museum, Mike's Famous Ham Place, the best ham sandwich you will ever have. Can visit Toronto. As long as they don't hold it in Ford Field, what a terrible decision.

Tampa is our favorite venue. Nashville would be great. Not a detractor of Columbus, there is an excellent German restaurant there and Keeneland, in Lexington KY is usually running that time of year. Even if you are not a horse racing fan it is worth a visit.

Agreed on Detroit. In 2010, I was pleasantly surprised at what the city had to offer to visitors despite its decay. One of the reasons I was heartbroken at the cancelling of the 2020 FF was that I really wanted to see how the city was doing post-bankruptcy.

Salt Lake City will be moving up the list and become a prime candidate to host a Frozen 4 but not for maybe about 4 years when the rebuild of the Delta Center is finished. Combine that with today's announcement of SLC as the host for the 2034 Winter Olympics.
