Future D3 (and D2) hockey programs

Might as well keep some off-season discussion going. D3HKY posted asking what schools would people want to see start up or revive hockey programs. There are a few new teams on the men's side with Beloit, Hiram, Roger Williams, St. John Fischer, and West Connecticut.

Whether speculation, hopes, or dreams, what schools should get some NCAA hockey in the near future?

I would think a few more schools in the MAC could add a team. It will be interesting to see how Hiram does, and if they can get any more teams to join. Chatham is on an island, now Hiram is as well. Though I would have thought Adrian and Trine would have influenced someone else in their vicinity.

I'm very curious about Hiram's goal for adding hockey. There's a good handful of private schools around Ohio and the vicinity that have sizable endowments, so maybe they want to be the first through the door if other schools are looking at starting their own programs. Should be a good base of recruits from in state, but we'll see how they manage.

I don't think you will see West Conn anytime soon. That place is a mess right now and might not even survive as an institution

Looks like Rutgers is looking to move to DIII in a year. I didn’t know it was possible to have a DIII program when all other sports there are D1.

I have always wondered why Syracuse does not have a mens ice hockey program, I know they have a women's,and it's not like there is no hockey in the area, and they are a d1 school??? off topic I know

The same reason they dont have baseball title 9. 105 football scholarships is not easy to balance out on the womens side with the split being 7 mens teams and 11 womens teams. The lax team is far too established to consider cutting. Rowing track/cross country are also olympic sports theyve sent multiple athletes too so theyre not getting cut either. and the soccer team won a national title 2 years ago. Plus any money they get for sports for the foreseable future is going towards NIL funding for football and basketball instead of expanding the sports they participate in

That's awesome if they're able to get an NCAA program started. No clue how that would work with the NCAA... has there ever been a D3 program at a D1 school (hockey or anything)? Have to assume it's a precursor to a D1 program in the near future.

You can't do that anymore. That's exactly why the D2 schools are all in limbo with their hockey teams. They have to be classified as D2 and cannot compete in a D3 national tournament.

Rutgers can call their team anything they want, but it will be considered D1 by the NCAA, and any D3 school which plays them can't count the game on their schedule in the NPI. And thus, like the D2 schools, they won't find a conference to play in.

Rutgers is referring to D3 of the NACHL which is a competitor to the ACHA when it comes to club hockey. From my understanding they have so much interest and success with their DII NACHL club they are launching a second club in the lower division. Kind of like how Adrian has (or had, havent looked in a while) multiple ACHA club teams because they have different divisions.

Oh, well in that case, I don't care.

Actually there is one way they could do it. Rutgers University - Newark and Rutgers University - Camden campuses have their own athletic depts separate from main campus Rutgers in New Brunswick, and both play NCAA DIII in the NJAC multisport conference. They would have to have a team at one of those campuses and not main campus.

Granted the post on Instagram references the Department of Club Sports and being open to students at all three campuses (which wouldn't fly for NCAA) I still stand by this being a club endeavor without any imminent plans for NCAA DIII hockey at Rutgers - Newark or Rutgers - Camden.

Rutgers - Newark is situated 1 mile from the RWJ Barnabas Hockey House which is behind the Prudential Center and serves as the Devils' practice rink and the former home of the Metropolitan Riveters of the NWHL/PHF. The Ironbound Elite girls hockey program that has been placing girls in DIII and DI programs operates out of this facility.

Rutgers - Camden would likely have to play at Rizzo Rink in South Philly (right across the Delaware River from campus) or the Pennsauken Skate Zone north of Camden which is home to the AAA level Philadelphia Flyers Elite programs....

Sure, but that's no different than SUNY Potsdam vs. SUNY Albany. Or Penn State Behrand vs Penn State. One is D1 and one is D3. And they don't share budgets.

Thanks for the details.
