Re: Fun With Numbers '14-'15: USCHO Posters Poll, Pairwise What-Ifs, and Other Goodie

Anyone know how many players from each of the top 5 went to 4-Nations? Just curious because some are giving Minn a bye for missing players. In alpha order lol... BC, Harvard, Minny, QU, Wisco. Thanks.

I guess Minny is 3 based on earlier post.

Re: Fun With Numbers '14-'15: USCHO Posters Poll, Pairwise What-Ifs, and Other Goodie

I believe Minnesota had all their players on Friday. Some were missing on Saturday.

Who are the 3 players from Minnesota? I know Brandt but don't know the others.

Wisco was missing Turnbull and Clark for both games, Pankowski on Saturday, and Sylvester after she got hurt on Friday versus UND (who was missing Krzyzaniak).
I think Q was just missing Darkangelo.
Harvard was missing Picard on Saturday and Maschmeyer all weekend.

Re: Fun With Numbers '14-'15: USCHO Posters Poll, Pairwise What-Ifs, and Other Goodie

Everyone handled their business except Minnesota, and they struggled to get the tie in that first game. Regarding opponents, I understand that Bemidji is formidable, but so is North Dakota. You've got to give some credit to Harvard and BC for dominating weaker opponents. The jury is out on Cornell, but QU did what it's been doing - they shut them out and scored goals.

I think it's fair to say that the results reflect quality of depth. While the stars carry teams to great records, it's the depth that helps those stars win championships.

Having said all that, it's also fair to say that the job of how to order 1-5 looks like it will be a season-long process.

Re: Fun With Numbers '14-'15: USCHO Posters Poll, Pairwise What-Ifs, and Other Goodie

It's chaos!!! No-one has a strong argument for being #1, lots of teams chasing the #2 spot...

1) Minnesota, yes despite everything. I asked myself the question "who do you most fancy to take the national title?" and I think it still has to be Minny, BC and Quinni haven't been really tested this season and Minny seem to have Wisco's number and the right big-game mentality.
2) BC -- Wins against Providence should have a .000001 weighting but the Saturday win showed exceptional depth.
3) Wisco -- solid results against a solid NoDak team despite being down players
4) Quinnipiac -- Cornell is a good win, but it's not clear how good Cornell are this year; otherwise the diet is as cupcakey as BC's, with only Clarkson 11/21, StL 11/22, Harvard 12/6 to really tell us something before Christmas
5) Harvard -- and of course they have a bye week this weekend. But the coming games against Clarkson / STL / BU / BC / QU will be a big help. Tough schedule!
6) Mercyhurst -- gotta respect the win %
7) Clarkson -- above their record here but they're getting it together and have the right history
8) BU -- good hustle at the end of the UNH game but shouldn't have let it get so close
9) Bemidji -- Respect
10) Cornell -- need a convincing win over Yale on 11/15 to stay here

Also receiving consideration: North Dakota, Dartmouth (racking up goals against weak opponents), UMD, Maine (can hang with anyone, have the Belt).
Surprisingly not receiving consideration: Northeastern. What's up?

Re: Fun With Numbers '14-'15: USCHO Posters Poll, Pairwise What-Ifs, and Other Goodie

1) Boston College impressive scores with depleted roster but need to play better teams to deserve #1 ongoing
2) Minnesota falls based on record vs Bemidji this weekend
3) Wisconsin nobody's proven they're better yet
4) Quinnipiac still looking good but the jury's out yet on whether beating a depleted Cornell is as impressive as it may seem

5) Boston U two wins vs Clarkson keeps them ahead
6) Clarkson solid results, other than BU series it's their goaltending that's making the difference
7) Harvard only beating cupcakes at this point, and not impressive vs RPI; relying on individual effort & goaltending so far
8) Bemidji impressive results vs Minn, close games with Wisc, plus win against a solid Vermont merits ranking

Honorable Mention (Tie 9-10):
UND SO Win vs Wisc, plus OT win vs UMD
UMD SO Win vs Minn
SLU Tie with BC and one win vs Clarkson; discounting loss to Brown based on use of backup goalie to start

After the odd results that have been occurring picking a top ten is extremely difficult this week. There are really only 7 maybe 8 teams that actually deserve a top ten spot then there are another 5 or that really should be just outside the top ten but since there's still 2/3 spots to fill, it's basically draw out of a hat for the last few spots.

I like that you give a mention to Maine and it's well deserved. I think they've got remarkable goaltending. As a result, it's hard to score on this team. They will be able to hang with anyone. Having said that, they won't crack top 10. Regarding Northeastern... they are a mess... that's what's up!

That has been a long time coming.

Lots of work to do though.

If BC-lite were to lose to Vermont minus Pelkey (more likely than Northeastern minus Coyne/Savage at the moment), should the Eagles drop, given everyone in shouting distance of them is resting?

Great goaltending seems to be a Maine tradition. For my money, Brittany Ott is the best American goalie who wasn't invited to the National Camp, and possibly the best goalie in the world who isn't playing in Kamloops or for a men's team.
