Re: Fun With Numbers '14-'15: USCHO Posters Poll, Pairwise What-Ifs, and Other Goodie

Sheesh, I didn't mean to poke any bears or **** anyone off, I was merely making some conversation - one of the hardest things about women's hockey is that with nothing ever being televised and webcasts costing $ those of us in opposite conferences (and opposite sides of the country) don't get to see many other team's games, so it's incredibly difficult to make team comparisons. I can really only look at the talent on paper and read the recaps and board posts and then see the results at the end of the year.

I was talking overall, not just this season. It's October. Your shot at the title is as good as anyone's. That's why they play the games. I'd love to know where you're seen/are reading folks say "this is the year" for Wisconsin. I know myself, I've said I find this team exciting and they have me feeling the most expectations I've had in a few years, but I certainly haven't said they are definitely going to win the title. I have said they could. We're embarrassingly lucky and any year, if the puck bounces right, we could. But Wisconsin can't beat Minnesota, so til they clear that hurdle, I'm really never going to go around assuming any sort of post-season success.

Hey I have no hard feelings, I like your stuff! And I enjoy the banter of it all.

As for BC, I don't think anyone is making the assumption that 'this is our title to lose' or anything like that. We have this huge hurdle to get over of having a ton of talent and then not coming through when it matters. My feelings on BC -- as well as the feelings of other BC fans I know -- is that 1) with the talent on the roster, this is the best shot we've ever had to finally break through and 2) given our lack of success in the past, another loss in the Frozen Four would be a huge disappointment.

Is there something wrong with those statements? And would anyone feel any different if they were rooting for a team that had never won and that, on paper, has more talent than their teams have had in the past?

I think one thing that we are all guilty of is that we see our team's talent every week, we're blown away by what our players can do, and we forget that other teams have talent as well. We know that they do, but we often lack an appreciation for how much talent they possess. I don't know that BC has failed to live up to its talent on any of its Frozen Four trips. I thought the Eagles lost to better teams. My criticism would be that BC tends to fade a little bit down the stretch leading up to the NCAAs, making its path in the national tournament harder than it otherwise might be.

It really doesn't matter how much talent we have compared to our past teams, only how that talent stacks up against our opponents.

when it gets down to the final 4, they all have the talent to win, often it comes down to which one is hungrier for it, which one gets lucky (or more accurately makes their own luck) or does the little things that make a difference

And then there's which team has the hot goaltending...

The Gophers found that out tonight.

Good lord help us all... TTT's aura is going to be huge if BC gets the #1 ranking on Monday.

Bemidji beats Minny. Wisco beats Bemidji. Minny beats Wisco. The mess has officially spread to the top of the order. Good luck this week with your top 10 boys and girls.

To further confuse everyone, here is the Pairwise as of this morning.

What? BC's not #1? Oh the humanity! Surely that will be the only ranking where that will not be the case, well, that one and my top 10.

3) Wisconsin (Lost to Minny)
4) Quinnipiac (Beating the cup cakes with just enough offense and great defense and shut out a supposedly  good Cornell)
5) Harvard (A good start but need to see a few more games)
6) Boston University (Poulin-ton University??)
7) Ohio State (They beat Bemidji)
8) Bemidji (Impressive weekend vs the Gophers)
9) Clarkson (Lost to Poulin-ton U or they would be higher)
10) Mercyhurst (they are winning against the cup cakes with a minor hiccup)

1) Boston College – undefeated and playing well
2) Harvard – undefeated and should play well (on paper anyway)
3) Quinnipiac – undefeated and now has offense to go along with defense (scary)
4) Minnesota – you have to fall because of Bemidji weekend (tie, s.o. loss, loss)
5) Wisconsin – if Minnesota is 4, Wisconsin has to be 5 (two losses to Minn)

Grand Canyon

6) Boston University
7) Clarkson
8) Ohio State
9) Bemidji
10) Vermont

Really tough this week.

1) Boston College -- Providence is terrible but encouraged how they played short 5 players.
2) Minnesota -- 2-4 are tough to pick. Minnesota was missing girls versus Bemidji so I'm not going to drop them too much.
3) Quinnipiac -- Man. They are looking really, really good.
4) Wisconsin -- Tie to NoDak gives QU the edge. I can't justify them above Minnesota right now either... yet.
5) Harvard -- Good start
6) Mercyhurst -- No reason for me to move them down at this point.
7) Boston University -- I guess. But they are on their way out.
8) Bemidji State -- O hay
9) Clarkson -- Welcome back. Much improved.
10) Vermont -- Time to give them a shout.

Re: Fun With Numbers '14-'15: USCHO Posters Poll, Pairwise What-Ifs, and Other Goodie

1. Boston COllege
2. Minnesota (Only because they were short players otherwise they would have dropped further)
3. Quinnipiac (They are looking pretty strong)
4. Harvard
5. Wisconsin
6. Boston University (I guess for now, only because they beat Clarkson)
7. Bemidji (Even though they were lucky enough to take Minnesota while they were short 3 players)
8. Clarkson (They are looking pretty good so far, should only have the 2 losses to BU, that first loss to SLU was just poor goalie choice in my opinion)
9. Mercyhurst
10. North Dakota (I guess, was originally planning on SLU or Yale for here but Yale Lost both and SLU lost to Brown)

It's really tough after #5. I know what teams I wanted in there (Ohio State and UMD were the only others I considered) but the order is a complete crapshoot.
