Love the what ifs....
I can give you more if you have any other ideas -- you can run them too on the simulator.

How about this one --

WHAT IF? 12/25/14: CHRISTMAS MIRACLE: Crowley, Johnson announce surprise Christmas matchup in Cancun; Eagles catch Malaria and fall to Badgers, 3-2.

:D :p

Add'l game: Wisconsin defeats Boston College

1) Minnesota - .6612
2) Boston College - .6587
3) Wisconsin - .6573

Sure, UW beats BC heads up and does not pass them...that's where the computer goes haywire. Anyway, you hit the one I was most interested in, beating the rodents in OT. That was a bitter drive home.

Oh I'm sure. Also I seem to remember following that game, didn't Wisconsin carry play for the most part in that game?

Just pulled up the box score, shots 41-35, geez, talk about high octane.

I'm losing my mind with no hockey so I'm trying to find ways to pass the time.

Also, Wisconsin totally dominated 2nd period in the first game in Minnesota last year and didn't score. Gophers vs Wisconsin games tend to be great games. Fast and clean. There were lots of penalties in one of those games earlier this year but that was the officiating, I think the games were clean. Also, I don't think the coaches insert lots of defensive schemes, Turn them loose and they each play their games. Fast and Clean!!

We have this conversation every single year and I'm sorry to bring it up yet again.

What constitutes a flight vs. a bus trip for NCAA purposes? My question stems from wondering about the distance from Mercyhurst to BC.

Re: Fun With Numbers '14-'15: USCHO Posters Poll, Pairwise What-Ifs, and Other Goodie

The cutoff is 400 miles for all NCAA D1 sports except men's and women's bouncy ball. D1 hoops has a 350 mile cutoff.

You may be right but I do know that Mankato is bussing to Lindenwood and that is a 500+ mile trip.

Are there loopholes to the rule?

Bemidji State is also bussing to Lindenwood. What teams choose to do out of their own budgets during the regular season and what the NCAA will reimburse come tournament time are two different things.

This is the NCAA requirement for the NCAA Tournament since the NCAA is footing the bill for travel. As for the regular season, it is up to the school as to how they want to spend their travel funds on getting somewhere.

During the regular season, the only requirement the NCAA has is when you can leave on a trip. But those rules, I believe, only apply when school is in session.

*edit-I now see ARM had pretty much said the same thing* :)

So that means it is very likely that a CHA champion Mercyhurst would play Minnesota or Wisconsin (assuming they are both top 4) unless a fourth WCHA team makes it into the field.

Penn State could bus to Quinnipiac but that's about it (of the likely top 4).

It's a lot more than 400 miles from Erie to either Madison (597) or Minneapolis (800+)

Yes, but given that Mercyhurst would be a flight regardless, they will pair the 2 eastern teams in the top 4 (again, assuming UM and UW are the other 2) with 2 eastern teams in the bottom 4, sending Mercyhurst out west.

EDIT: That's assuming there are 2 eastern teams in the bottom 4 (i.e. not 4 WCHA teams in the tourney, which seems exceedingly unlikely)

Re: Fun With Numbers '14-'15: USCHO Posters Poll, Pairwise What-Ifs, and Other Goodie

So now that Yale is a TUC, it's started to affect the Pairwise a bit because USCHO is not calculating them correctly.

USCHO's Pairwise: http://www.uscho.com/rankings/pairwise-rankings/d-i-women/grid/
My Pairwise: http://www.bcinterruption.com/2014/12/15/7398979/PairwisePredictor

In USCHO's, Yale doesn't win any comparisons because they are losing the TUC and CoOpp to Princeton, the only team lower than then in the RPI that's a TUC.

In my Pairwise, Yale's all the way up in 15th in the RPI which wins it a couple of comparisons. So it swaps around a lot of the bottom of the Pairwise.

Yale probably won't climb high enough to affect the top 8. The worst case scenario is if USCHO has Yale as a non-TUC and my Pairwise has them as a TUC. Then you could have a ripple affect all the way up to the top of the rankings.

1 Boston College -- Looking forward to the game against BU, but looking forward to QU even more.
2 Minnesota -- Starting to look a lot better than they did in the beginning of the year.
3 Wisconsin -- Top three is very close.

4 Quinnipiac -- Once again put up a ridiculous shot differential against bad teams. That's the biggest reason they're here. Game against BC will be a fascinating one.
5 Harvard -- Crimson on a rapid climb right now.
6 Boston University -- Nice little winning streak against some unimpressive teams.
7 Minnesota-Duluth -- Split against Bemidji toward the end of the first half looking a lot less impressive.
8 Clarkson -- Was deciding between Ohio State and Clarkson for this spot. Went with the team that didn't get shut out by Mercyhurst.
9 Bemidji State -- Look out below...
10 Mercyhurst -- Look out below...

So if you lose the battle for 8th, then two teams below you pass you by? I guess you just wanted to use that "look out below" thing twice.

Yes. I had some convoluted logic that made sense at the time, which was that BSU and Mercyhurst had awful weekends but I didn't think I should drop them completely yet, but I wanted them too be in the bottom two as punishment for being bad hockey teams.
