Frozen Four 2015 Where do we go from here?

Re: Frozen Four 2015 Where do we go from here?

For those of you that are looking at Chicago, we'll see how the Hockey City classic sells in 2 weeks... As of now, I am thinking I'll be able to just walk up and get decent seats for under $20... As much as I would like to see the Frozen Four here, I just don't see it happening...

you realize most of the tickets are sold via lottery and locals don't really get a chance to even purchase tickets? it's like a hockey annual conference with the same losers showing up year after year :p

I understand that part of it... They can put the event wherever the hell they want and they will sell 20K tickets... I was commenting on the idea that Chicago would embrace the event and support it outside of the actual games...

they wouldn't open the bars and let the beer flow? what else do we need?!?! :D

What's wrong with Washington, D.C. again? From what I recall, that was a success, wasn't it? How did it go in relation to Tampa? (I was only in DC).

One thing I remember is that, years later, locals from DC still remember the frozen four.

From what I've been hearing around Notre Dame, tickets are selling quite well and a large crowd is expected. It probably won't sell out, but those who walk up for tickets may be surprised at the choices left. Right now it's mostly 3rd deck, singles or limited view.

Re: Frozen Four 2015 Where do we go from here?

The City of Omaha has taken a run at this every time bids have been asked for since we've had a program.

The last time, one of the ideas floated by the Omaha Convention and Visitor's Bureau to the NCAA was the idea of conducting both the men's and women's tournament's here--at the same time. The men at what was then the Qwest Center, now the Centurylink Center, and the women at the Omaha Civic Auditorium. The NCAA was actually kind of intrigued by this idea, I was told, but we haven't gotten a bid yet, obviously. It may be that having the CWS here every year might even be hurting our chances. The rich getting richer? Here's an article touting our cause, though:

I heard they're expecting 50,000+?

Well, I certainly hope that it comes back to DC, but I am not convinced that locals paid much attention to it back then, let alone remember it now. :) [Obviously dedicated hockey fans remember it, but it hardly made the news here.]

It did quite well, and seemed to have mainly positive reviews here on USCHO, but not as good as Tampa.

I really don't think Ted Leonsis will put much of an effort to have it in his building. Much like I posted about Boston earlier, DC has made a push to host regional finals of basketball repeatedly, which brings much more revenue than hockey. DC is much more of a hoops town than hockey (except the bandwagon Caps phenomenon that is currently going on). I would love to have it here, but it is extremely unlikely.

Certainly DC is more of a basketball town. It is even more of a football town and currently a baseball town. However, I do think that it will eventually come back here -- the question in my mind is how soon. What it takes is someone to organize the bid. If you remember we even had posts here on USCHO from a member of the organizing committee, which I don't think has happened from any other FF. As to Leonsis -- how much would he have to be involved? Isn't it more the city, and for them the question is how much money it would bring in. Although a regional basketball would also do well, I would think a larger percentage of locals would attend that, and they won't fill hotels. OTOH, it is cherry blossom season, and there will be a lot of tourists anyway.

Ted has a ton to do with the process. Its his venue. I'm sure if an organizing committee came to him with a plan to pursue a Frozen Four he would not be opposed, but the area schools currently have his ear with hoops. The area schools still get a cut of hosting regionals in multiple sports, and Georgetown for one is keen on getting that dough for hosting the Men's Basketball Tournament. DC is holding the East regional finals for the NCAA's this year, and has hosted numerous first and second round weekends recently.

They should host the Conf tourney for the new big east catholic conference.

I thought D>C> was very good. Lots to see and do, plenty of places to eat and drink and the weather was good too.

While I liked DC as a venue, both the arena itself and having a good excuse to take a week off to see the city, as a Frozen Four host, it was severely lacking. I stopped at two different bars within a couple blocks of the arena pre-game. In both of them, I had the bartenders asking what was with all the strange jerseys. They honestly hadn't even heard that the NCAA tournament was in town.

Compare this to the past several years, and it was night-and-day. As much as I hated the site of the games in Detroit, all the bars and stuff in the area were well aware that the tournament was there, staffed accordingly, etc. Tampa was absolutely amazing in how they prepped for it, St. Paul was a natural of course, and prior to DC, all the sites had much better awareness of the event happening, going back to when I started in Boston 2004. (Not really sure about Columbus, to be honest, I didn't hit many of the bars around the arena, but even there, the hotels on the outer portions of town had signs up welcoming FF guests, so I'm going to guess the bars were in good shape).

Do bartenders make better drinks if they know there is a hockey tournament that you are there for?

Probably stronger ones. Although I don't know whether they think that's because you can handle them, or because you *need* them.

Re: Frozen Four 2015 Where do we go from here?

I go every year and I can't figure out what's going on with Boston. There are dozens of Division I programs within a stone's throw of TD Banknorth and we haven't been there in 9 years. The only thing I can think of is Boston is not bidding. I don't get it though. You don't need a city to bid, you need a program. You mean to tell me if one of the Beanpot schools bid, TD Banknorth, the Bruins and/or the city of Boston wouldn't be on board?

If I remember right, there has been a Boston bid subsequent to 2004, and they lost because it was half-azzed.
