Frozen 4 Minny-Like's, Dislike's, Other Comments

Re: Frozen 4 Minny-Like's, Dislike's, Other Comments

Ridder - great facility; managed to avoid the rink food (walked to Dinkytown, Mesa Pizza........yum) Understand the ice was soft, thus the number of players down or falling by the player benches.

Minny - I think anyone flying it would have appreciated the access to a major airport, unlike Placid where you fly and then still have a drive; would like to see the championship stay in an area with decent air service/connections.

Our hotel was downtown Minny, about 3 miles from Ridder, easy drive there and parking was no issue either.

Not sure who controls how tickets are distributed, but don't you think they would allocate tickets to the four teams by center ice; but no they stuck everyone behind the goals or in the corners; thus why we purchased tickets on the blue line were we like to sit! But ended up still by lots of SNC fans.

This is the way it's done for every NCAA championship hockey tournament, including Division I. I think one reason is they want the more rabid fans, i.e., the students, separated as much as possible no matter who makes it to the finals.

Russell, are those figures attendance or tickets sold? That can certainly account for how the arena looks.

Beats me...

But the NCAA got their money one way or another. :-)
.

Tickets sold, without a doubt. Championships manual says that the official attendance figures are based on ticket sales, and that a "turnstile" count may be provided in addition to, but not in place of, that figure. Which accounts for 2009, to an extent. You see, with Plattsburgh hosting in LP, and the Cardinals being as dominant as they were that year, half of the Plattsburgh fan base had already bought their tickets... and then just didn't go...

So it may say 3,000-something... but I'm willing to bet there were a lot fewer than that. (I wasn't there... it was Friday-Saturday that year, and I was still in HS) :p

Are you talking about when Gustavus and Neumann made it to the finals?

That game still drew 3141, more than any other non-LP final. Granted, in a bigger arena it may look less. The semifinals (with Hobart also playing that day) drew 3036.

The first year when Plattsburgh played St. Norbert in the final, it drew 4770. The semifinals drew 5600 when Norwich and Elmira were also playing that day.

No one entered attendance figures for the third year -- idiots. But, I thought I remember reading a LP press release that stated the largest crowd ever for a D3 final.

This year in the Ridder, the semifinals drew 1761 and the final drew 1741. Definitely better numbers than I was afraid we were going to see.

Russell:

I agree that the Western venue will never match the Eastern venue in fan attendance due to the number of teams particularly clsoe to LP and the local interest in D3 hockey. I can say that the figures are a bit off at LP as last year specifically, many tickets were given away for the Final to the many Can Am hockey teams and followers in LP for various tourneys. Either way, I personally like LP for the Eastern location and Ridder for the Western location. Adding the womens D3 Frozen 4 may be interesting.

I made it a two-part trip and brought the family. Hit the Mall of America and visited family that live in the area as well.
Rink was great, I thought it was an ideal facility for the event. Crowds were great, final was loud.
We stayed in Roseville, easy drive to the rink.
I will definitely go back if/when it returns.

OZ Likes Minneapolis; the town, facilities and people were great! Experienced downtown and uptown and the U of M. Explored by Skyway! Excellent food and beverage at Hells Kitchen, and the Local. We also went to a U of M bar near BW3 called Herb and...(?) where we quaffed a few Summit Pale Ales with some SNC fans. Caught all three games, never once sat in my seat. Good to finally meet MJBeckman, Webb, and Mark from Adrian. I prefer the Frozen Four stay in larger MSA's. Only dislike was Oswego's early exit--good job Adrian. Great Weekend of hockey, and DIII fans, parents and players are the best. Maybe next year the East will show up.

$13.50 for two shots of Southern and $10.00 for a table dance. Something isnt right when the liquor is expensive and the women are cheap.

RPI has over 5,000 seats. It is a D-III school in all sports but hockey. But, it's in Troy.

Hey, they've got a Dinosaur Barbecue there now, and...well, their crime rate dropped from 152% of the national average to only 144% from '08 to '09...yeah, that's all I've got.

Troy's not so bad... if you stay inside you vehicle, with the doors locked and windows rolled up, looking straight forward at the road the whole time... park really close to the arena, to minimize time spent waling out in the open, and make sure to lock your car and hide from sight anything that might suggest value. As long as you do all that, you should have no problem in Troy :)

Arbor Hill? Been there once, never going again :)

"Let's be careful out there..."

With a rate of only 33.4 crimes per 1000 inhabitants, the Basque Country has one of the lowest crime rates in Europe.
Crime rates can, however, vary significantly between rural and urban areas, though urban areas are still not particularly dangerous. Avoid the San Francisco area, however. Violent crime is extremely rare, but the usual precautions will keep you out of trouble.

It is advisable not to wear any Spanish symbols. Spain national football (soccer) tops, Spanish flags or Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid club paraphernalia are best avoided. Alhough no assaults on people wearing them have been recorded, some people might be upset about them. It is also best to avoid referring to the Basque Country as Spain.

Take into account that inhabitants of the Basque Country are divided between those who support independence or autonomy from Spain and consider themselves primarily or entirely Basque (the majority, at 51%) and others who consider themselves primarily or entirely Spanish (a 49% minority). Within these currents, there are further subdivisions of opinion ranging from supporters of the Terrorist Group ETA at one end to those who supported the fascist regime of General Franco at the other (though most people fall somewhere in between these extremes).

These political issues have dominated life in the Basque Country for generations and you will still find coverage of them in news media across the Basque Country every day. Also certain bars will have a distinctly Basque nationalist clientele (such bars will generally have posters and slogans on the walls) where pro-Spanish opinions will be unwelcome. If speaking to strangers, bear these divisions in mind and try not to cause offence.:eek:

If you go out in Bilbao, you'll notice that a lot of people smoke marijuana very openly, even inside bars.:D:D:D:D:D

Most of that is absolutely 100% true.

When we got our tour to "introduce us to the city", we walked across the river from the neighborhood known as San Francisco. The tour guide pointed over there and said "If there is any possible way... ANY... avoid going here. Especially at night, although stuff happens there in the daytime, too."

As for the Basque Country/Spain... yeah, it's a fairly easy-to-avoid subject. It's funny, in a way. These people will discuss just about anything in the open. Sex, politics, religion. Anything goes... But most people avoid this subject with foreigners, although from some discussions with students in the dorms, I've gathered that you're either for ETA or completely against ETA. Some rather pro-Independence people will tell you the hate ETA. The 2004 Madrid Bombings have been determined to have been related to an Al-Qaeda cell in Spain, but there are still those up here who insist that ETA must have been involved. Despite the fact that it completely differs from ETA's MO (there was no warning ahead of time, there was no video released immediately claiming responsibility... just the opposite, they came out denying responsibility... it also would have been the largest civilian casualty by a European-based terrorist organization ever). But I'm here in Spain during a cease-fire declared by ETA in order to focus on a democratic solution to the issue. But as for independence/non-independence... it's hard to go anywhere without seeing Basque Nationalist Propaganda. I've ever seen in displayed at town hall buildings and such (not here in Bilbao, but elsewhere in Euskadi). But a lot of pro-Basque Propaganda is also used as symbols of Athletic Club Bilbao, the local La Liga team. Basque Nationalist or not, everybody proudly waves the Ikurriña, and large "Euskal Presoak - Euskal Herria" flags are everywhere in San Mamés.

The marijuana thing is also true. But they don't smoke marijuana in bars a anymore. In fact, they don't smoke in bars anymore. As of January 1, 2011, it is illegal to smoke inside a public establishment in Spain. First offense will get you a fine of 3.000€. So now it's being smoked outside the bars :D :D :D

PBG (Plattsburgh Int Airport) is growing very rapidly and is due for a large expansion. I think you may see getting to lake Placid become much easier and less expensive as more airlines and flights are scheduled.

Except for Colgan Air's 19 pax turbo props, most of their flights are semi-regularly schedule flights on airlines like Spirit and Allegiant - (2X per week to Orlando, Vegas, etc.)

PBG would be the third leg on a bad flight... Fewer jets fly upstate routes anymore...small planes + low volume = not enough seats
