Re: Friars 2009-2010 Season

What can I say? scrambledlegs is a natural prophet! (Were you also right about Lacasse too or have they even announced that yet?)

I didn't see it on the Friars' website and it hasn't been announced yet, but I would guess not :( Oh well, she got my vote :D

Re: Friars 2009-2010 Season

I've seen Lacasses' last three games, and IMHO, I think she certainly earned an award - either POTW or DPOTW. She has been much more than "notable".

Re: Friars 2009-2010 Season

A great week for the Friar Faithful :D

Alyse Ruff Named Hockey East Player of the Week

It was announced by the Hockey East Association that junior forward Alyse Ruff (Tualatin, Ore.) was named Pure Hockey Player of the Week on Monday, January 4. Ruff led Providence to a 1-0-1 record at the Easton Holiday Showcase with three goals, including one game winner, and an assist. Ruff scored both goals in PC's 2-0 victory over Minnesota State on Sunday, January 3 and added a goal and an assist in a 4-4 tie against St. Cloud State on Saturday. The assist on Saturday marked the 50th point of her career.

Genevieve Lacasse Named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week

It was announced by the Hockey East Association that Providence College sophomore goaltender Genevieve Lacasse (Scarborough, Ontario) has been named Hockey East Defensive Player of the Week on January 4. Lacasse led Providence to a 1-0-1 record with 66 saves on the weekend including 31 in a 2-0 shutout over Minnesota State in the Easton Holiday Showcase on Sunday, January 3. Lacasse recorded 35 saves in a 4-4 tie against host school St. Cloud State on Saturday.

More good news...

DEFENSIVE CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK
GENEVIEVE LACASSE - PROVIDENCE COLLEGE
Sophomore Goaltender; Scarborough, Ont.

Lacasse led PC to a pair of victories over No. 8 Cornell including a 3-0 shutout on Sunday. Lacasse finished the weekend with 51 saves and a 1.51 GAA and a .944 save percentage.

and...

Providence College: Providence recorded its 600th victory as a program when it defeated No. 8 Cornell, 6-3, on Saturday afternoon... The Friars now join UNH as the only two schools with 600 victories...

Congrats! It looks like that has required a lot of years of consistency -- I was surprised that PC has exceeded 22 wins in a season only once, while UNH has done so a dozen times. Obviously, that's due in large part to the season being much shorter not that long ago.

Which is why UNH is in spitting distance of 700. You measure 20 instead of 22 as the standard and the number is a lot closer in seasons at that level, but the difference win wise in UNH's 16 20 or more win seasons and PC's 14 is a heck of a lot of wins. Plus the fact since they moved to a 32-34 regular season schedule PC has not carried the success from their earlier years. The other difference is the head to head which really is not close I believe UNH has won about 30 more games.

I know you have championed her quite a bit and made the case recently when she got Dec defensive player of the month. Even though her numbers are not as strong as they were last year from what I've seen she has been the prime reason PC has hung tough as evidenced by so many ties and excluding empty nets 1 goal losses.

Her season to me reminds me a great deal of Sara DaCosta's junior year whose number did not match up with Ali Brewer's but who did not have the team in front of her that Brewer did.

I suspect that unless the defense steps up and plays more consistently this team is no where near truly being a ranked team. I know you have stood up and said last year it wasn't necessary for the defense to be a big part of the offense. However not only are you getting limited offensive contributions but you really don't have someone who has even stepped in and filled Brittany Simpson's skates never mind Smith/Gigliotti's who did not measure to Halcisak/Roth

With the experience moving into the junior class next year coupled with more talented seniors I certainly hope the 2 defenders Deraney has brought in for next year can jump and and adjust quickly. There is offensive potential on this team, it has just not been totally exploited.

The scores may not say it but Providence needed Lacasse to hold the fort both games. They got sloppy on Saturday maybe because they saw they could roll out four lines and basically break down the small numbers and absent stared Cornell team. Sunday they should have had a worn down Cornell team and they looked like they pushed only on a limited basis. (though I'll grant you getting 3 3rd period penalties might have put a damper on building some finishing momentum--however they also didn't exactly light it up on 2 pp chances of their own that period.

I think you may be mixing apples and oranges. In the past, the PC powerplay defensemens' MO has been to fire pucks at the net in hopes of a goal or a rebound. As such, this greatly improves the chance to get a goal or assist. This year, however, the strategy seems to be for the defense to move the puck up front and keep the PK unit on its toes. The defense are usually the 4th person to touch the puck and as such don't get the "credit" however, given the success of the PP unit, I don't think you can totally ignore their role.

In 5 on 5 play, I do think that the forwards rarely use their defense to generate plays. I often think they should be passing the puck to the blueline but instead they keep the puck low. This limits the d's ability to jump into the play.

Finally, with regards to production, the 60 goals scored so far make them on track to meet the 86 scored last year.

Cornell's PK unit, at 97.9% didn't help much either!!

Re: Friars 2009-2010 Season

Congratulations, Friars on a hard-fought, close game! Given the number of games we have let tie up in the last few minutes this year, this was especially breath-taking to watch!!

Re: Friars 2009-2010 Season

We beat UHN again?!??! I supposed the only bad news is that UnhCat07 is going to be hard to find for the next week...

Re: Friars 2009-2010 Season

And again! Congratulations on the series sweep, keep the streak going.

I believe this is the 5th time PC has gotten at least 3 wins in one season against UNH. The last time they got 4 was the year Chris Bailey was captain and that year it was a best of 7 series.

Since it would not be unusual to cross paths once more this year the only time PC swept 4 games was the year Jackie Gladu (Barto) senior season.

The last thing Coach Deraney said to me after today's game, when I congratulated him on his #200, was "We'll meet again real soon, and not just in the same rink." Post season play is just a month away!

At least PC didn't have to listen to that gawd awful obnoxious chant which is usually followed by that ridiculously concieted dance routine driveled about by the UNH followers when they're winning:mad: !!!

Hey - I challenge you to keep in step with the Litter Box for a game. That's a highly choreographed, and physically demanding routine they have. (You should have seen it Saturday night at the Men's game at the Verizon Wireless Center, as they hopped up and down in the first row of the nosebleed section!)
