Well, less than 2 hours to the first puck drop seemed to be a great time to retire the old thread and start this one. :)

Good luck to the Friars tonight as they play McGill University.

In Minnesota Providence has created some buzz with recruiting of F Bacon 2008, F Anderson 2009, F Buie (especially) and D Pendleton for 2010.

What happened in the opener is McGill that good?

LaCasse was great (I missed the 1st period though) she stopped about 30 shots and let in but 2 goals. She also had to go back into the game about half way in the 3rd. How she goes is how the season goes. By year end she is going to make the work load of Sara and Jana look like they were part timers.

Still bad with taking penalties and in killing them. They were missing several players which might have affected the offense and the stamina come 3rd period.

Other big disappointment he had 5 experienced dmen and they didn't show that experience. They are really going to miss Simpson and the versatility Normore gave them last year in tough situations.

McGill had a winning record last year against NCAA D1 schools (3-2 IIRC ) and that included playing against top 10 clubs like Harvard and SLU.

McGill had a winning record last year against NCAA D1 schools (3-2 IIRC ) and that included playing against top 10 clubs like Harvard and SLU.

According the Friartown Free Press:
"Meanwhile, McGill, the two-time defending Canadian Interuniversity champion, could easily be wearing a Wisconsin Badgers “W” or a Golden Gophers “M” with a tiny maple leaf stamped in the middle of it, denoting them as a Canadian chapter of college hockey excellence.

They, like the Badgers, will even be missing their head coach, Peter Smith, for the duration of the 2009-10 campaign as he attends to Olympic duties.

All that just made it an enticing recipe for the Friars’ annual preseason extramural scrimmage. The old practice of facing a Provincial Women’s League team was clearly not giving them the launch pad they needed to ignite their NCAA run, hence the drastic change in select Canadian invitee of the year.

“McGill’s a very good team, and if you did the research on our record against them, it’s a much different team than they’ve ever had before,” said Friars’ skipper Bob Deraney. “They’ve got a terrific coaching staff that’s attracted a lot of great players. That was a really good test for us and that was the idea. I wanted to see what our weaknesses were."

I think you are reading a tad bit much into this one game. PC was playing a college team that has already had a couple of games and a couple of weeks of practice under their belt.

That being said, in the first period, McGill was held scoreless despite being given 4 power play opportunities. In the second period, PC scored 3 goals to McGill's one. It was only the third period with numerous line changes being made at all positions coupled with way too many penalties that brought about their downfall.

I think you will see a very different game this weekend as they open with HE action against Maine.

Re: Friars 2009-2010 Season

The Providence College women's hockey team announced the captains for the 2009-10 season. Senior defenseman Colleen Martin (Woburn, Mass.) has been voted team captain. Junior forward Jean O'Neill (Strafford, Pa.) will represent the Friars as the assistant captain.

Congratulations, Colleen and Jean!

Can't believe they lose at home to a team that's only in year 2 of D1 play.

Cav, any reports on this one.

Re: Friars 2009-2010 Season

What happened in the Brown game today 5-1 since like a huge surprise?!

Friars were a little shorthanded...but looked good early when Brown was out of sync. Brown came out of the gate in the second with a lot more jump, and tied the score in the first minute. Providence still kept up the pressure, but Brown's goalie kept the score tied.

In the third the tide had shifted and Brown was on a role. They played with confidence and determination and kept the Friars to the perimeter. Their transition game was night and day different than in the first and they moved the puck well in all three zone, but especially in the offensive. They got LaCasse moving side to side and were able to light the lamp.

Basically they got a shot of confidence and adrenaline and it was off to the races.
