Friar Hockey 21-22 - Reach for the top

Chris Peters @chrismpeters

Sources tell @DailyFaceoff
the #Blackhawks have signed goaltender Jaxson Stauber out of Providence. Stauber, 22, had one more year of NCAA eligibility - but Hawks convinced the undrafted FA the time was right. Stauber's father, Robb, played for the #LAKings and #Sabres.

Friars have been evaluating netminders in transfer portal in case this happened. They have Bruins 4th rounder Philip Svedeb?ck of Dubuque coming in

I just want to know, is Leaman all in or not....if his head is somewhere else then might be time for him to seek the somewhere else. If you think the new AD is going to get rid of him your whistling up the wrong tree there and it's really not warranted based on his 11 years here and as the other poster pointed out.

The USA thing is just completing what they couldn't finish back in January, doubt USA hockey would make any changes in staff for that. Based on his last radio show didn't get the impression he was all for restarting the WSJ tourney 8 months later but committed to continuing to coach that team.

This league has gotten a lot harder with UMASS and now UCONN much better. UCONN will have a new on campus arena I believe next year making that game an even harder road test. Thinking Vermont and UMAINE will improve as well under new coaches. So it's not getting any easier in a competitive league that has taken it's lumps outside of the league last few years. I don't believe Leaman shies away from playing Western teams and has/is trying to get some of those better teams to play at Schneider, shouldn't have to be a one way street with the West.

Hope he gets renewed spirit.

You can spin it however you like, but with a 16-12-6 record in ‘19-20, they would have missed the tourney had there been one. Record the past 3 years has been quite disappointing considering Nate’s ability to recruit more high end talent with each passing year, and let’s not overstate the success of this year’s team based on a 22 win season. 11 wins against sub .500 teams and 9 of those against teams near the bottom of the pairwise. Perhaps scheduling tougher OOC completion would serve them better in the long run.
Scoring was more of a problem this season than goaltending IMO…gave up 3rd fewest goals in HE and were near bottom in goals scored.

PC finished FIRST in Hockey East in goals scored in the conference. (I know the numbers are screwed up due to some games with PC scoring 6+ goals)

Agreed. Leaman has brought the program to new heights during his tenure - with two frozen four appearances and one championship - but along with that comes higher expectations as a result. Yes, they may have had bad puck/ref luck this year, and the NCAA certainly screwed them last year by giving the final playoff spot to Notre Dame (even though PC had a better record and PW ranking) and then not replacing ND with PC during the tournament within a reasonable timeframe due to Covid.

However it's no coincidence IMHO in the last two/three consecutive years that PC has missed the NCAA tournament, Leaman also coached other teams and thus his focus was not 100% on advancing PC's program. Nate has been personally successful during that time, and PC less so as a team.

** Added**

And so it continues: Nate Leaman, Theresa Feaster Return To 2022 U.S. National Junior Team Staff - Providence College Athletics (friars.com)

So Nate is going to miss 3-4 weeks in the middle of the summer when he could be out evaluating potential 2023-2024 recruits....Take that for what his focus is on.

So now we're frowning on a coach's professional development ? Doesn't coaching against teams with the best young players from all over the world add to a coach's experience ? Rand Pecknold will miss two weeks this coming season to coach the USA Jr. National Team at World's. His AC's are from WMU (Ferschweiler)and Dartmouth (Cashman). Are they also neglecting their squads ? C'mon man.... The reason guys like Leaman and Pecknold are tapped for these roles is that they are GREAT coaches.

PC has/or would have missed three straight NCAA tournaments now. The trend since 2019 has not been good and he deserves to be questioned on his decisions.

He has spent now three straight summers focusing on the USA program instead of the PC program.

In the last three seasons, who has he really recruited that has elite talent?

Berard isn't a recruit as he was coming to PC no matter what with his family connections.

With Barry Trotz out with NYI, is it possible Lou takes a look at Leaman? My gut says he at least interviews for it if he can. I'm surprised I haven't seen him linked with Detroit other than a couple speculative blogs

Well, Bennett got hired and Isles coaching job is taken. I'm sure that will disappoint no more than one of you here.

Hi All. Been hanging around here for past few years and not posting much. Decided to start a twitter account focused on PC hockey while also touching on other Hockey East and other NCAA hockey news. Have future roster projection in first few posts based on recruiting commits. Feel free to follow at TheCollegeHockeyHoodlum or @CHHoodlum. Let me know what else you would like to see discussed on Friars Hockey.
