Friar Hockey 21-22 - Reach for the top

Minimally a split with UMass is needed, and a sweep would be optimal. I think UMass is ripe for the picking, especially given that they've struggled in their wins against lesser teams.

Well they proved why they are one of the top teams in the league and they continue their dominance of the Friars at Amherst with the 1-0 win. Makes tomorrow night critical for this early season matchup.

Just throwing this out there... anyone looking for tickets to tonight's game, three available. Let me know. Would rather they not go to waste.

Good bounce back after the UMASS weekend. Should be interesting to see how they play in Burlington, which has not been terribly kind to PC over the years.

That was another great weekend, aside from the bad first period on Friday where they spotted the Catamounts a 3-0 lead. The Gutt is such a tough place to get wins for this program that those six points look massive.
And on a national level, PC somehow drops 2 spots in the polls after sweeping their way through the weekend. More worrying is that PC is solidly stuck in the 18-21 range in the Pairwise which means that if the season ends, we're left out again. Hockey East might only send one of the UMASS schools to the NCAA tournament which is bizarre.

According to Mike Logan, the Gutt has not been a bad place for PC during Leaman's time as the HC....although it can be a tough place to win....didn't seem to be big crowds for the 2 games there...

Friars have to continue to rack up OOC wins from a PWR point few, so the IVY weekend is big. Then big Northeastern weekend followed by 2 at home with Princeton to end the first half. Chance to go on a good winning streak before the tourney at end of December. After that it's all HE until the exhibition game to finish the regular season against the development team.

UVM hasn't been that good for a while, so that probably has something to do with the smaller crowds. The only game I went to at UVM was their first Hockey East game ever so that place was packed. I'm not that surprised that Leaman's teams have a decent record at the Gutt - they also have the ability to win at Alfond, the Whitt, and even - this will shock 1999 Jon - Meehan Auditorium!
Speaking of Bruno, Brown and Dartmouth are both okay this year, so PC needs to be careful. It does seem like Quinnpiac and Cornell are carrying the ECAC right now. Clarkson and Colgate might be right behind them and no one knows that Harvard will do in any given weekend. On the other side of the standings, Yale is close to being unable to field a team.

Happy Thanksgiving all you Friar fans, from PK and the rest of the Korea's, just not the north one.

And just like that, the Eli manage to get their first win of the season and it's against UVM. Just in case you thought Hockey East was going to scrape out a winning out of conference record.

PC down 3-0 in the first period again.
And now it's tied. We really need to stop doing this.
I almost feel bad for Dartmouth because they were skating circles around PC in the first. Almost.

PC 7, Dartmouth 4. Closer than the score indicates and the Big Green out played PC for stretches and there were 2 empty net goals.

Can we please stop giving up 3 goals in the first?

Dartmouth has been giving up goals left and right this year. No surprise they blew the lead and then some
The loss against UVM where the Big Green had a five minute power play and still couldn't score? Yikes.

If any PC fan misses post 2003 era of PC hockey, Wisconsin's interpretation of the both the Dump and Watch and Shots on Shin in the Saturday night game against Clarkson would rekindle fond memories.

If they do that again with NU this weekend, I do not think outcome(s) will be as fortunate. Both the defense and Stauber need to button up and play better in the 1st.
Levi is not the goaltender you want to spot a 3 goal lead to.
The polls continue to amuse me. PC, UMASS, UML, and NU are ranked 13-16 to make Hockey East teams easier to find. BC just needs to go up a few spots to make 5 Hockey East teams in a row. More importantly, PC moves up to 16 in the pairwise.

Stauber was nowhere near fault on the first two goals....

Perhaps, but what about his play against Vermont, Denver, and UMass? He's given up some soft goals for sure, and the Friars in most cases have come back. Stauber is not solely at fault here, and as I said the defense in front of him needs to play better as well.

Perhaps??? I can't comment on the Vermont or Denver games since I wasn't at those games. There are a few goals he would want back but AGAIN as I always say, the upper classmen continue to regress under Nate.

Has Ben Mirageas gotten better at PC throughout his career? Is Callahan any better today than he was as a sophomore? Bunz is on his fifth year now and just there.

I watched all of the aforementioned games and attended one at home vs. UMass. There is a trend of giving up early goals that cannot be disputed. Stauber is part of that. The others in front of him can certainly play better early on. The games against NU are a key test and may indicate how the second half of the season could go, especially against the quality HE opponents.

Big weekend coming up against Northeastern. I looked at the goalie stats for this league and while Savory is has a ridiculous GAA at UML, Stauber is closer to Murray and Levi than I thought. I'd like to see at least a split. Part of that is not having the crappy first periods we have had in some of our wins.
There's also been this weird thing in some of PC's games where the refs will not call penalties? PC is winning most of the games so it's not too much of a problem but it's still bizarre.
