Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2016: Because "blob" is not an acceptable shape.

Made an appointment at a sports clinic to have my knee(s) looked at. I fell pretty hard at hockey a few months ago, and my right shin swelled up HUGE, like a second kneecap, just below my knee. It went down, but there's still some swelling or.. something there, and it hurts like a m-effer if I have to kneel. Hasn't really affected hockey or cycling or most other things, but it feels a little sore afterwards. Other knee also sore afterwards, but no second kneecap. I've been wearing volleyball knee pads under my shin pads, and that helps a ton, but I'm wondering if I have to get it cleaned out. This kind of pain does not usually stick around for months for me, and I haven't really had knee problems before. I can't imagine there's any ligament damage, but maybe bone chips or something.
Sounds like bursitis.

I started ultra marathon training this week. Things for me to remember as I prepare to run 50 miles through the woods:

1. Run on dirt. Asphalt will not help me here.
2. Eat the food. My reading tells me aid stations will have things like pretzels, candy, PB&J sandwiches, as energy gels and bars will not be enough to sustain.
3. Go slow. Terrain will dictate pace.
4. And I'll have an automatic PR, so "time on my feet" trumps the clock.

Have you ever thought about applying to do the Barkley? :)

The documentary is on Netflix, if you are a subscriber.

No, but now I'm curious...

For the record, when I was REALLY skinny, I wouldn't have dared to even try.

Down 6 lbs to 226.25. Figured once I got back into a routine that I'd start losing again. And there is no need for extreme measures, either. Here's my plan:

Lots of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, and legumes.
60 minutes of physical activity, 5-6 days a week.
Plenty of home cooking.
More water and coffee, less pop and beer.

Got my knee checked out. Could be calcified bursa, could be bone chips, could just be inflamed bursa that is taking a really long time to heal. He didn't think it was anything serious (although neither did I), and they gave me a foam donut (mmmmm, donut) to wear around it so I can kneel and not put pressure directly on it.

Unrelated, I almost threw up in the gym parking lot last night. Tough spin class. Good times. I don't know if it's the humidity, or if I got out of shape, but it's been more of a struggle lately.

Yeah, it was a little hard to do some work out in the sun today. kinda tapped out to get some more fluids in me and cool off. I don't want to say it was hot today, but it sure as hell could have warmed up a little slower to allow us to switch over to our summer oil. :p

My shirt was soaked yesterday at the end of my run.

First duathlon this weekend. Goal is just to finish and get to the food (there will be a picnic post-race for athletes).

And what will they have for the runners? :D ;)

After seeing myself in the mirror while at the hospital with my dad (he had his hip replaced in March after years of marathon-ing and activity), I made a conscious decision to get in better shape. Put it off for a month, then went on vacation for the Frozen Four, but have actually made an effort since we've been back to eat less, eat better, and exercise. Have lost 15 lbs since making that commitment. Am a hair under 250 (249.6) for the first time since I started dating tcbg (8 years ago) and 5 lbs lighter than my wedding (about 2 years ago). Started the C25K today. Have tried it in the past, but have had unrealistic expectations and less commitment previously. I actually did some reading this time before starting and never before had seen the recommendation that during the jogging parts, you start with the slowest jog possible. It's getting used to moving and the activity rather than speed or distance that the first few weeks are supposed to condition you for. We'll see how this goes...

Good! Hopefully, you've signed up for a race. As someone who's been at this for the last 8 years, I agree with the Oatmeal, "running a race assigns a point to a sport that can seem very pointless."

September will be a month of AWESOME for me: Marquette Marathon, Reeds Lake Olympic Duathlon (5K run/40K bike/10K run), Hungerford Games 50 Mile Ultra.

On the left, in October 2004, I weighed about 360-370, and I was killing 6 grilled cheese sandwiches in less than 5 minutes. That was from a time where all I wanted to do was EAT ALL THE FOOD.

In the center is when I took dietary Puritanism too far. I thought fat was bad, I thought sugar was worse, and and I bonked at mile 22 of the Grand Rapids marathon that year.

And on the right is where I'm at now. Yes, I eat gluten, yes, I eat butter, yes, I treat myself to massive muffins from coffee shops and local bakeries. And I am in the best shape of my life.

And for those of you just getting into running: this is my medal rack. It's what I've earned in 8 years of running, 7 of it in long-distance. You can have anything you want, as long as you keep going, even when it sucks.

Week 11 of ultra-marathon training. 14 mile runs now fall in the middle of the week, instead of on long run Saturdays. Eat all the things?

Also, because my calorie intake hasn't kept up with my activity level, I went from 232 on May 31 to 220. My size 36 pants fit again, and in terms of measurements:

31" waist
36" hips
38" chest

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2016: Because "blob" is not an acceptable shape.

High blood pressure is my biggest health threat. There's other things at play, but given my genetics, this was by far the most urgent. When I went for help on my migraines a couple years ago, my BP was ~150's over ~110's. Not good at all. One day I put up a 163/115 in the neurologist's office. He wasn't overly confident about letting me out of the office that afternoon. I felt fine, so off I went.

But I think I've finally cracked the code on how to get my BP down. It's simple: get up early and get on the treadmill before I go to work.

My thought process used to be "Hey, exercise is exercise. Doesn't matter if you do it at 6:30 AM or 6:30 PM. You don't like to get up in the morning, so get it done at night. Just get your time and work in, and things will take care of themselves."

Bzzzt. Wrong. Since the end of April I've been weighing myself and taking a BP reading every night, about 10 PM or so, and putting together a little spreadsheet. About 4 weeks ago, I was fed up. My weight was over 200, and the BP was back over 140/100. Nothing was working, and I was just about done trying. The treadmill wasn't working, I couldn't run because my knee was barking at me, and the hour-long walks around the local college campus were not moving the needle one bit. But then a week ago, I decided to get up earlier in the morning and hit the treadmill for 30 minutes, either walking or doing 1st and 2nd week Couch-to-5K runs. I still cannot run for extended periods of time due to the knee, but if I don't overdo it, I'm fine.

The weight hasn't budged. Stuck around 197-199. I'll probably show up at the doctor's office at the end of July at 205 or so. HOWEVER, my last BP reading, done 10 minutes ago, was 123/82. The 5-day moving average is now 126/87 at night, and 114/81 in the morning. The big change started when I finally started getting my lazy butt out of bed at 6:15 AM and getting on the treadmill before I start my day. I don't know what it is about the morning exercise that makes it different from identical evening exercise. I do not care. All I know, and all I'm concerned about, is the result. And I'm okay with it so far. This is NOT the finish line, and there is still work to be done. But it is progress. Finally.

Hammer, that is interesting and I am glad to hear. I am curious too what the difference is between AM and PM exercise. No other diet changes?

As far as the knee have you tried other cardio stuff? Swimming or the rower? I have on again / off again bursitis in my knee and I find the rowing and swimming as much less impactful on it.

The diet has actually gotten a tad worse. I've got a lot of work to do there. Weight jumped up tonight, due to eating pizza like a pig. BP is still in a good place.

As for AM vs PM, I don't know. All I do know is that when I started exercising in the morning, the BP numbers dropped. I don't know if it's correlation or causation. Either way, I'm fine with it. I don't know if it works for everyone. I just know that it appears to work for me.

Regarding other exercises, the reason I chose what I did was because I had the equipment in-house, and a college campus within 3 blocks. The pool requires a drive. The treadmill requires a 10 step walk.
