Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2016: Because "blob" is not an acceptable shape.
High blood pressure is my biggest health threat. There's other things at play, but given my genetics, this was by far the most urgent. When I went for help on my migraines a couple years ago, my BP was ~150's over ~110's. Not good at all. One day I put up a 163/115 in the neurologist's office. He wasn't overly confident about letting me out of the office that afternoon. I felt fine, so off I went.
But I think I've finally cracked the code on how to get my BP down. It's simple: get up early and get on the treadmill before I go to work.
My thought process used to be "Hey, exercise is exercise. Doesn't matter if you do it at 6:30 AM or 6:30 PM. You don't like to get up in the morning, so get it done at night. Just get your time and work in, and things will take care of themselves."
Bzzzt. Wrong. Since the end of April I've been weighing myself and taking a BP reading every night, about 10 PM or so, and putting together a little spreadsheet. About 4 weeks ago, I was fed up. My weight was over 200, and the BP was back over 140/100. Nothing was working, and I was just about done trying. The treadmill wasn't working, I couldn't run because my knee was barking at me, and the hour-long walks around the local college campus were not moving the needle one bit. But then a week ago, I decided to get up earlier in the morning and hit the treadmill for 30 minutes, either walking or doing 1st and 2nd week Couch-to-5K runs. I still cannot run for extended periods of time due to the knee, but if I don't overdo it, I'm fine.
The weight hasn't budged. Stuck around 197-199. I'll probably show up at the doctor's office at the end of July at 205 or so. HOWEVER, my last BP reading, done 10 minutes ago, was 123/82. The 5-day moving average is now 126/87 at night, and 114/81 in the morning. The big change started when I finally started getting my lazy butt out of bed at 6:15 AM and getting on the treadmill before I start my day. I don't know what it is about the morning exercise that makes it different from identical evening exercise. I do not care. All I know, and all I'm concerned about, is the result. And I'm okay with it so far. This is NOT the finish line, and there is still work to be done. But it is progress. Finally.
