Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

Cracked 10.0 MPH on the bike today. One thing I'm doing to increase speed: whenever I see nothing but open path in front of me, I pedal as hard as I can.
I think you try to keep a steady crank rpm all the time, uphill, downhill etc, I use to try to keep it in the 90s, Tour de France guys in 120s, something like that anyway

That's what I've been trying to do. The goal for the Grand Rapids Triathlon is just to finish.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

we went to a OrangeTheory workout this Spring with the daughter in Denver. google it. quite the workout. both kids are doing it and having great results.

Bob - you are an animal!!

I spent the winter eating Southwestern food and am now paying the price. had hoped to run a 5k this summer ... not so sure now.

I just push it a little further every day. By next year, I plan on doing an Olympic triathlon, a 50K, and a 50 mile race. By age 37 or 38, I took inspiration from Sloe Gin and Quiz and I want to complete an Ironman.

Also: today's crop of diet gurus makes me miss Richard Simmons and Susan Powter.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

Enrolled in a clinical weight loss program on 3/27 per a recommendation...actually, an order by transplant staff. They had removed me from the "active" list due to a BMI in excess of their threshold for transplant recipients. The HealthEast weight loss clinic is fairly simple / straightforward. Education along with some specific guidelines. Mine are simply a limit of 1800 calories daily. no more than 75 grams carbohydrates and at least 130 grams of protein. Education is regarding good sources of fats vs. bad as good fats promote weight loss. Stay away from refined carbs especially. I'm not made to monitor fat consumption closely as long as I stick with good fats and stay below the 1800 calorie limit. They figure staying under 1800 calories will keep fat consumption in check and advise of a change in doctrine in that fat is not the culprit it was once thought to be...it's carbs. I am to start each day with pretty much pure protein intake. Puts your body in the desired mode for the day...vs. starting with carbs (wrong mode). Any carbs you do consume, the rule is "white is not right" per refined carbs in particular. So basically natural carbs as in fruits are preferred.

Down 22 lbs. since 3/27 and have been reinstated on the active list. Stuck there after six weeks of steady weight loss. Expected by the clinic Docs so now it's time to add increased physical activity to the equation. Time to get back on the bike plus do some walking, to start.

Edit: Haven't had a soda since starting. Pretty key component.

Good job, brooky, it's not an easy thing to do.

If you've not tried it yet and have a smart phone, the MyFitnessPal app is good for monitoring caloric intake. Its food database is pretty comprehensive, even having specific menu items at a lot of restaurants.

Thanks...and yes, the clinic staff advised of the MyFitnessPal site. I use that and fatsecret.com regularly.

600 meters in the pool today. I'm feeling better in the water with each trip.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

You know that commercial where the guy trains to get his heart rate low enough and catches up with the female runner? I have noticed at the gym that my heart rate has been getting lower on the elliptical. Guess this means that I should increase the ramp level and the resistance level.

Now to do that with the treadmill. The speed is one thing, but the incline at the same speed is a different story.

Also, I am on the 4th notch of 6 on my belt.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

Second time back at the gym was better than the first. I feel like a big pansy because I'm lifting half as much as I did before the concussion, but I'll get there. I'm trying not to rush it, but it is frustrating (I am going to be terrible at getting old, if this is any hint). I'd like to go to kickboxing on Saturday, but pulled a quad... and I think I need to rest it, as what I'd REALLY like to do is play hockey on Monday.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

Reeds Lake 5K: 28:07... still not the 5K personal record I've been chasing, but I am pleased that my 5K time keeps falling with every attempt as of late.
Reeds Lake 10: 59:27, which is a new PR by a whole 9 seconds. I am surprised I did this well, considering I haven't been able to train as much as I'd like. Sciatica is a genuine pain in the ***. That being said, I'll do better at the Coast Guard Festival run. Also... running in short shorts is when Body Glide comes in handy. At least my man nipples didn't bleed today.

Thundercat is coming back.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

One more week until my first triathlon. I'll get my wetsuit on Tuesday, and then I'll hit Muskegon Lake for an open water swim. Thought about Lake Michigan, but I'm not sure about the current right now.

Nerves are starting to kick in...

Are you buying or renting the wetsuit?

If buying, be very careful to not nick the material with your fingernails when pulling it on... You will know what I mean when you get it.

Renting. For my first, I was advised to rent.
