Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

That sucks - agree that BMI is not that useful. So many other things can affect your BMI, including how much muscle you have. My company requires that we meet 3 of 5 measurements involving BMI, blood pressure, glucose, cholesterol and smoking to get the "enhanced" benefits - otherwise you have to go through a "wellness coaching" program. That seems a little more fair than just basing it on BMI and programs that people don't have time to complete or track.

Hey Jen, how are you feeling anyway?

Hey Jen, how are you feeling anyway?

Doing better all the time, but still not 100%. Occasional mild headaches, so no exercise yet (have to go 24 hours without symptoms before any exercise). Off the Tylenol now, so I'm hoping to get a better picture of how I really feel soon (very slow process to stop taking it - blah). It's really frustrating to feel ALMOST fine, and be able to do ALMOST everything - but still unable to exercise (it's the only thing I CAN'T do). I did some pretty heavy yard work yesterday, and I'm not quite there yet. If it was anything other than my brain, I'd have gone back 2 weeks ago and toughed it out. Thanks for asking. :)

Ugh. Lower back strain/piriformis syndrome. Doctor was very clear about no running or bike riding until this passes.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

Also, you're not a man (I'm assuming, based upon our meeting, unless you're going wild Bill from the Silence of the Lambs). Our increased testosterone levels give us an advantage in dropping weight over women in the early stages of the process. Greater muscle mass translates into greater weight loss during that period of time. Women, on average, will drop more in inches early on, though their weight won't drop as rapidly. That's according to the women who run the fat man clinic I used to drop my weight.

This is true that I am not a man. I tend to eat better than my hubby so I have been coasting for the past couple of months. I have noticed some difference with losing inches, especially when I have to start wearing a belt. With previous yo-yoing weight loss experiences, I should be melting fat towards the end of summer. Like usual, plan is to keep it off for good.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

Picked up a weight set today after looking on Craigslist for a while.

It's a Weider set that has a bench and a squat rack along with curl bars and attachments for leg work and a pulley system for shoulders etc. I mainly got it for the boy, but am quite excited to join him in this.

He's getting quite a bit bigger than me and that can't be allowed to stand!

:D

Been working out on this quite a bit.

LOVE having this right in my basement.

I don't appear to be any bigger, but the weight I'm using is going up and I notice that I am stronger when I play hockey.

The best part is playing hard rock or metal while lifting and feeling like a flashback/meathead from the early 80s. Working on the mullet...

Ugh. Lower back strain/piriformis syndrome. Doctor was very clear about no running or bike riding until this passes.

That being said, she did allow for yoga, swimming, and "gentle activity," whatever that means. While I'm thrilled I can now float and doggy paddle in the pool now, I am going to learn the breaststroke for the Grand Rapids Triathlon and Tri Del Sol.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

Yoga and kickboxing are helping heal my lower back. Still need to wait a few days for the pain to completely disappear before I can run again.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

Banged out 5 miles last night in about 49 mins. Felt pretty good. Closing in on my 6 mile record before disaster struck last year with the broken ankle.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

Yea, I try to stay under 10 even though the program I am on now say run at a like 11:30 pace. Just seems too easy.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

I play hockey with a guy who has, on more than one occassion, run a marathon in the morning (usually Grandma's Marathon in Duluth) and then played a couple games of hockey in the evening. And he's skating strong throughout both games. He's a freak of nature, all the more so because his dad looks like Ernest Borgnine.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

For swimming, I am getting better... I went about 6 laps in the pool today, and it took me 30 minutes. It's still not very graceful, but I feel I can move the 750 meters the swim portion of the tri.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

Did a drop set on bench for the first time on Sunday.

Start at a high weight and go til fail and drop 5 pounds each set (till fail) until you do just the bar.

My kid was my spot and afterwards he said, "Try a pushup."

Couldn't lift my face off the carpet. Had to roll over to get up.

:D

THAT was a workout.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

I was able to do a Plyo workout tonight with no pain. My back is feeling better, enough to where I can go for a bike ride on Saturday and start Twin Cities marathon training on Tuesday.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

8:30 pace for 3.6 miles last night. Really didn't even feel all that uncomfortable and probably could have gone on for a while longer at that pace.

Re: Fitness (Diet/Exercise) 2015: Define Yourself.

Note to self...

Don't start a bench workout at midnight.

Had a hard time getting to sleep.

Feel great today though that I got it in!
