First College Hockey Game Attended

Re: First College Hockey Game Attended

My first would have been at RPI Field house in the late 60's. Probably a JV game with free entry and all the game pucks we could run down.

Re: First College Hockey Game Attended

:o The first college hockey game I went to, it was more to see a family member play in America's Pep Band than to see the game itself, in Hamden 2009 to watch the visiting team. The game however was far better than I expected and I became hooked (no 2 minute penalty though) and I've been to quite a few since then.

Re: First College Hockey Game Attended

My first game was UMaine at the Cumberland County Civic Center. I don't know the year or the opponent, but it was in between 1999 and 2005.

Re: First College Hockey Game Attended

Gophers vs Mankato just after Mankato joined the WCHA.. No one else at work wanted those tickets.

In the late 60's, when freshmen were not eligible to play on varsity teams, RPI had freshman teams, rather than JV teams.

Although I remember that there was at least one year when the freshman team had to use an upperclassman as its goalie, because the only goalie who had been recruited that year left school before the hockey season started.

You are probably referring to Bill van Leeuven. He was an upper classman on the freshman team more than one year.

It would have been 10/12/13 - Western Michigan at Notre Dame. My girlfriend, now fiancée, took me and now I love college hockey. Went to numerous games that year and last year. She was happy I liked it, but now I'm more addicted than she is. Irish won 4-0 I believe.

Second game was the following weekend with Michigan Tech visiting Notre Dame. ND won 7-4 and I've hated Tech with a passion ever since.

Thanksgiving day in 1960. Michigan State at St. Lawrence. My mother worked for the 4-H department and SLU would give them free tickets because the students were all out of town. State won by something like 8-5 and I was hooked. Still have season tickets.

And now this year's goalie leaves school before even becoming a freshman. But that's for another thread...
Anyway, my first game was January 1973 at RPI Field House against Middlebury as a birthday present from my brother. I was hooked 4Life but my brother never went to another game.

Re: First College Hockey Game Attended

A good a time to finally jump in. My son and I went Feb. 21, 2014 BC 3 - UML 0. Got hooked. Went to 4 or 5 reg season games last year, went to the HE Championship game and the Frozen 4.

What a newbie....explains a few things....lmaooo!!
I wouldn't call a fan of ten years a newbie...on the other hand I just finished my 30th season of going to college games and I still consider myself a newcomer! :) Most of my friends from BU have been attending games for far longer, some only to the late sixties, but others back to the early fifties.

Merrimack @ NU December 2006. I was a very casual hockey fan coming into college and then I saw a game live and I was hooked. I've missed very few NU home games since.

Re: First College Hockey Game Attended

October 19, 2002. UAF hosted Ohio state at the Carlson Center which ended in a 1-1 tie.

Re: First College Hockey Game Attended

UW-Superior at Bemidji State in 1990 (freshman year of college), BSU won, but I would have to go look up the score.
