Fire red!!

Re: Fire red!!

Hear and see what you are saying...still feel that he should stay for his 4th year...but after that..????...I still think he(Gendron)may need to tinker with his Staff, by that and I hate to throw Leach under the Bus...BUT bring in a Goaltending Coach/Assistant Coach who would be hands on with the Goaltending...be out and about looking at other recruiting goaltending prospects...and JUST STAY with 3 Coaches...Head Coach/Assistant Associate Coach(Guite) and bring in a NEW Assistant-Goaltending Coach and NO MORE Volunteer Goaltending Coaches...and if I remember correctly Gendron did say when he was HIRED...If I can't get it done in 4 years then I should be Fired/not renewed. I maybe wrong on the wording but he was talking that he needed to get it fixed and fixed in that time period. And he felt confident in doing so IIRC...(???).
The NCAA only allows three full-time coaches including the Head Coach. A fourth must be a so-called volunteer.

Re: Fire red!!

Maybe some, but not the intelligent fans. Denver is only .500 this year and Monty inherited a lot more than Red. All of us love Monty but I'm not sure he was the answer. It was always going to take a lot of time regardless of who was hired.

I disagree to a point. I don't think Monty would have been the answer but if you look ay UML, Merrimack...to an extent, and the Friars they went from the outhouse to the penthouse real quick. It wasn't because they all of a sudden had 15 NHL'ers on the squad. What was the difference? Coaching. Just my observation.

Re: Fire red!!

The Maine program was officially toast the day Shawn Walsh passed away.

Don't necessarily disagree ... but Standbrook propped up Whitehead for almost a decade's worth of very competitive hockey, including two more trips to the FF Finals.

As recently discussed in the "HE What If ... " thread, it's amazing to think where UMaine was when Walshy started, and where he took the program afterwards. Maybe even more amazing in the aftermath, if the present condition of the UMaine program is in any way to be considered "water finding its own level". The one constant pretty much through all the successful times was Standbrook though, and Red's perception as being a 'happy passenger" when assisting Walshy becomes more and more apparent with every passing season. :(

Re: Fire red!!

BTW, the real "Red" (Berenson) will most likely be stepping down after this year. Nothing is really changing though (as far as we know)....

Program after that was never the same and truthfully we may never see the Program at the top or near it like the Walsh era...but I don't see why "someone" can't come in and make it a whole lot better then it has been in the last 10 years...still think a young assistant with some moxie can make a go of it @ Maine...at least I hope so...but for now the future is not in good hands...as you said in another post, Merrmack/UML/Providence have been jump started and it did not take 4,5 years to do so...another PLUS for those Programs is they have HOCKEY PEOPLE in charge now...know the in's and out's...Coaching/Recruiting are the name of the game...and for the last 10 years Maine has fallen off the map in that Department.

Don't forget that Whitehead also has Shawn's boys for 7 years or so if you count committed recruits. Yes Standbrook was a huge asset esp when it came to goaltending. The true freefall was when all of Walshys boys graduated or left for the pros.

If you look back the 2005 recruiting class was when things really took a nose dive. There were obviously some good players that came in after that but the classes overall were never that great again and Maine didn't bring in many guys that developed into good players like Lawson, Schutte, etc.

And now we have a Freshman class that has contributed a grand total of 2 goals. I don't think Red is a horrible coach or hockey mind. I think he truly loves Maine and cares deeply for the program. He and the rest of the staff aren't the right combination for this massive restoration project. As has been said by me and others Maine needs a smart hungry young coach to come in and jumpstart the attitude and actually have a plan. I've never heard Red lay out his specific plan. I don't think he has one and it shows.

Maine competed for a Hockey East championship and a national title as recently as 2012. If Maine had a goal tender they may have won either or both. Walsh or Standbrook had nothing to do with that team. As great a recruiter and teacher Grant was, he did not have great success with Matt Morris. He may have improved his skills, but so far he is not an elite goal tender.

I think you're being a little harsh on the freshman class. How many times have you actually seen them play in person? There is some talent there and I think they will come good. Not being surrounded by much talent doesn't help their cause.

Who would you hire? I think Guite should and will be Maine's next coach. Do you have someone else in mind?

One last thing I would add, look at who was already committed for 2014 and 2015 when Red was hired. This is the first year where his options weren't limited.

I've seen them live 5 times and on TV. I think there could be some talent there but not 1st line talent. As far as who I'd hire...can't answer that at this point. When Red was hired I liked it because of the direct link to Shawn, he's a great hockey mind and I believed that he could work some walshy magic. I think the next hire, like I said before has to be a young asst from somewhere that is super motivated, has new ideas and innovations, can connect with recruits and players better and has no connection to Maine's past. I really think it's time to wipe the slate clean. This program is at a point where it can go one of 2 ways. It can't afford 2 or 3 more years of 6 to 10 win seasons. Nobody will come play at Maine. The program will fall into an abyss it can't climb out of. There are already too many negatives it has to overcome ie: location, $$, facilities etc. Past success has made those a non factor until the last few years. It's at a point where a new vision has to take hold or R.I.P Maine hockey.

What freshman impresses you. I've seen them plenty at Alfond. I keep waiting for Gibson to show me something, so far nothing. Perez I like, Robbins can skate, Muelbauer absolutely not ready to play, Rai hurt, after that?????

Isn't Guite currently the lead recruiter? I mean, fine if you guys want him, but he wouldn't be anywhere close to the top of my list if I were a UMaine fan, and wanted to jumpstart the program.

Personally, I'd recommend driving the Bangor Brinks truck down to Providence with the school president, and make Walshy's former volunteer assistant an offer he can't refuse ...

You forgot the best one, Michel. I think Gibson, Perez, and Robbins will all come good. I've watched Rai in warmups and he can really shoot it. Larry mentioned the other night that he has been tentative because of his concussion issues. If he gets bigger and gets his confidence back I think he would be the best of the bunch. Becker is a D1 player but not a whole lot more. I agree on Muelbauer. I can't see any of those guys leaving early and I think they are a good foundation. I know there are a lot of people who want some sort of quick fix but that isn't reality.
