Fire Dick Umile!!!!!

Re: Fire Dick Umile!!!!!

Denver takes its hockey seriously. They just dumped their coach, who, oh by the way, has two NCAA Championships on his resume.

Meanwhile, in Durham...

maybe if du had won friday night it would have been the other way around???

Re: Fire Dick Umile!!!!!

Why is there no mention of Sean Tremblay as a replacement, anywhere that guy goes he turns into a winner. And he has coached a hand full of the team already in all-star games and with the Monarchs.

Backto UNH, IMO Umile can retire whenever he wants to, kinda like Charlie Holt, and don't forget about Brian McCloskey with the UNH women's program and DaveLassonde who is at Denver, both very capable coaches!
McCloskey has now led one of the most storied women's programs in the country, one which had NEVER had a sub-.500 season in it's history, to .469, .329, .471 over the past three years. Those 3 seasons account for over 23% of all the losses the program has had in it's 36 year history. The idea of rewarding that with a promotion to men's head coach is truly mind blowing.

To be fair Cloud, when Asst. Coach Erin Whitten got pregnant, she didn't travel and the recruiting did suffer...thru graduation and transfers the team just didnt have the horses and depth to compete at the D-1 level...also the last few years we didn't have the goaltending to make the timely saves, to say the least! All that said, I don't know if B-Mac would take on such a heavy commitment now....

Hey, Scott, if the shoe fits.....................BTW, it is what it is. It has nothing to do with "bitterness"

Do you mean ....

1) That the UNH coach would have been let go? :-)
or
2) That the DU coach would have been retained? :-(

So the head coach had nothing to do with the recruiting deficit, or the transfers? A pregnancy and the goaltenders was causal?

The transfers were huge, and it wasn't just fourth liners who weren't getting ice time fleeing to somewhere they could play - which should tell you a lot.

Thanks for making this point so well...its bugged me for a while when I hear people pining for McCloskey (aka the Michael Bishop of UNH hockey) to take over the men's program, yet they ignore his total lack of success on the women's side...

The McClockey story might also be considered a cautionary tale for those mentioning other names as possible successors, and projecting their own unrealistic expectations upon them.

May not be a great head coach in the womens game, but the man could recruit for the men's game.

Re: Fire Dick Umile!!!!!

No argument there JB, he helped bring some great players to Durham, although recruiting is but one facet of the job.

Obviously there is no way to answer this question, but if McCloskey was still recuiting for the men's team would he still get those types of players? Its easy to say yes looking at his track record. But part of me thinks that even his success might have waned. It just seems to me that UNH was a program on the rise back then, with a new building and all. Everything runs its course, times change, the national landcape shifts and you have to do things differently. Perhaps we would be still be moaning about why UNH can't the types of players it used to.

Like I said, we will never know, just food for thought.

Explain the Michael Bishop thing....

McCloskey was a master recruiter, and the talent has been down since he left, especially offensively. I also wouldn't call his league championships and trips to the frozen four a 'total lack of success'. The last three years have been disastrous, however, and I hope they can somehow recover.

Ps, I'm not suggesting her be a good fit as men's head coach, but you're giving him no credit and brushing off the success he did have on the women's side

Regarding the Michael Bishop comparison - for those who don't remember, Bishop was Drew Bledsoe's backup in the late 90's. Very athletic, but a one dimensional quarterback. Yet I always heard cries for him to play more. After all, as the saying goes, the backup qb is the most popular player on many football teams.

I always felt that McCloskey, who was Umile's assistant during those same years, was in a similar situation to Bishop. Like Bishop, McCloskey had a single, great talent - in his case recruiting - but that didn't mean he was ready for the top job. Just as was the case when Bledsoe struggled and fans clammored for Bishop, it seemed that everytime UNH lost a big game, there were calls for McCloskey to replace Umile. Yet those fans ignored the fact that McCloskey was himself part of that coaching staff. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't he an assistant when UNH collapsed in 1998, (though that team did rebound in the NCAAs) wasn't he also behind the bench in Anaheim and St. Paul in 1999 and 2002? It seemed to me that he got all of the praise and bore no responsibity for anything that went wrong.

Ultimately, those who wanted Bledsoe replaced were correct, but it wasn't Michael Bishop who got them to their ultimate goal, it was obviously Tom Brady. Likewise those who have called for Umile's head my be correct - but it may take someone else to get them there.

You are correct, however, in that I was a bit harsh in using the term total lack of success.
