Freddie, I've been to both arenas recently. And as of February, no, BG still looks like they haven't pushed a broom through there since about 1985. There's cobwebs in that arena older than I am. I'll take Ewigleben over BG every day of the week. At we've put a coat of paint on our place since the Reagan Administration.
Ferris is doing the best they can, facility-wise, with a ~40 year old arena and a very limited budget.
Yeah, but they have a curling rink.![]()
Sure, enrollment is up, but Mecosta County isn't exactly overflowing with money, either.
Touche.Yeah, but they have a curling rink.![]()
Ferris is really underrated as one of the toughest places to play. I can't think of anybody that plays well there.
Touche.![]()
Sometimes Ferris is included in that mix.![]()
The fact of the matter is, there's just not a lot around Big Rapids. You've got Cadillac an hour north (woo-hoo!) and Grand Rapids an hour south, and CMU just short of an hour to the east, and not a whole lot in between, jobs, money or city-wise. I spent 4 1/2 years there. I would know. Outside of Ferris, you could probably fire a cannon through most of Mecosta County and hit nothing but trees.
There hasn't been anything to do in Big Rapids since they bulldozed the Chieftain Roller Rink and built an A&P.
I also remember meeting Top Taggert at the "wecome back" cook-out downtown.
