Yeah... fair enough. It's tough to get it loud enough from just one or two tubas to be heard by the entire arena if it's played 100% correctly though. The point gets across either way

Don't know if its been mentioned, but one of my favorites is at UMN right before the opposing team has a player come out of the box the students chant "what's that smell" then the announcer announces "WI at full strength".

Alright, so somebody here at PC wrote an article about how embarrassed she was by the student section crowd because we were too "negative", "drunk" and "rowdy" because we screamed things like "sucks!" and "safety school!" against UMass. Before I write my response letter to the editor, I was wondering what some of your favorite traditions are at games. Like for example, at UMaine, they yell out "Loser" and "Big Deal" when the opposing starters are lined up. Any creative goal chants, anti-opposing team chants, etc would be helpful. Thanks!

After reading the article it is fairly clear that this poor girl never played a team sport before, the newspaper should let a sports person write about sports and allow this girl to cover something that she is more familiar with...I dont think the paper would let a student that loves sports write about how boring the musical they went to was...

Didnt read all the posts however if it hasnt been mentioned the Cornell fans have some great traditions...I swear they get together during the week and practice in the rink just like the players do!

It's not even a question of what instrument does what, it's a question of the tones that are used. I'm not talking octaves, either. Whatever though, it's your band, you guys do what you want.

Communists from Pyongyang, N. Korea are brought up in such a disciplined manner that they don't require practice.

One more tradition at Maine occurs when the referees hit the ice prior to the game and between periods, the band plays the "Smilin' Bob" theme. They used to play "3 blind mice" but that was quickly squelched by the administration (and maybe Hockey East)

Although I hate to admit it, "Black Betty" at UNH is pretty cool

RPI will only do it if the refs are really bad at a particular moment, and it's a VERY rare occurrence that the band leader will ask for it during the skate-around. Although I do remember one game where both bands played it... AT THE SAME TIME. Let's just say that person no longer refs in the ECAC...

Really? The article is labeled "commentary" and is written entirely in the first person, so it sounds to me like she's speaking for herself.

So can we both agree that the Cowl made a mistake in publishing this? I understand that brilliant sports commentary is not exactly overflowing on the campus of Providence College, but the team actually manages to win a game and we have to read some woman who doesn't like hockey whine that the students were mean? could it be any more obvious that the administration at PC doesn't care about ice hockey when they're now allowing articles referring to the students watching the game as uncouth drunks?
And BTW, yes, her subject sample is awful. That was not a rowdy PC hockey crowd. I've seen and heard of much worse. Ask Zudnic about the clown who jumped on his back one night. i've seen rougher crowds at Merrimack when they were awful. That woman would have killed herself in shame if she had gone to game at Alfond, Matthew, Lynah, Kohl, Yost, etc...
I don't think even UMASS fans would debate that for a ten year period, their fan base was overly fond of loud chantings of the F word.

If we're talking about great venue/crowds/atmospheres, I nominate SLU. Appleton is a phenomenal place to see a game.

I enjoy the "Hey! Drop the puck!" chant before each period. I thoroughly enjoyed it last year when we inserted "Hey! sue suck!" instead when und came to town.

I like getting to the game early and watching warmups as well as listening to the band warmup and play "HailMinn" as it echoes a little bit throughout the arena, I love that song.

Others were listed by Brenthoven, but I always love the "doo dah" song at the begining of each period and the funnel chant if the Gophers score enough goals.

Least favorites:

F the "other team". So unoriginal.

The sconnie "we want more" cheer. It's like a third grader's cheer.

The Michigan Tech Pep Band still does this at every home game, everytime the refs touch the ice before every period. There are 2 refs and 2 linesman now, but the joke is still there

-Northeastern's rendition of Gary Glitter's "Rock and Roll, Pt. 2" after NU goals. "Oooooohhhhh, sieve, you suck!" It goes on forever and is really annoying if you're an opposing fan. Awesome if you're an NU fan or neutral observer, though.

Especially is Northeastern is getting beaten badly, at the Maine game when we scored to make it 5-1 Maine we chanted that for a solid 5 or 6 minutes

Somehow I forgot to mention my absolute favorite: BU student section vs. NU student section at the Beanpot. They sit right next to each other and each one takes up 6-8 sections of the Garden balcony. The signs, the chants, the bands... everything about it is awesome (well, maybe not the NU band, but everything else).
