The national champions have been crowned and the D3 portal has started to grow with the offseason here.

Stories to watch so far:

- Mercyhurst's men's program closing adds 20-25 players to the portal and leaves a handful of prospects with an uncertain path forward -- where do Mercyhurt's players disperse and which D3 programs could land some D1 talent?

- First year of CHL player eligibility sees 300+ players committing to/playing NCAA hockey, with domino effects becoming more clear

- 50+ D3 players have entered the portal already kicking off what should be an active offseason as conference realignment solidifies

- Top pickup listed so far is Concannon Award winner Jonathan Surrette out of D2 Assumption, putting up a massive 34G-31A-65P season

It's interesting that at the D3 level, entry into the transfer portal seems exponentially more common among eastern region teams. It was the same last year with the exception of basically the entire Northland roster (and surprisingly some of Aurora's best players - not sure what was up with that? I think they all stayed. Probably D1 dreams foiled by CHL players.)

I was going to make a comment about how there are 2.5 times as many East teams as West teams, but I count 3 players from Beloit, one from Trine and one from Dubuque, so it's nowhere near proportional.

I think Akl and Schmuck both hit the portal after putting up big numbers for Aurora in 2024-25 and they both stuck around.

Not an insider - but feel it’s more likely than not. With his college stats though wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a bit of D1 interest. He’s a Mass native at a school in Worcester, so maybe there’s some AHA/ECAC interest (would be an easy pick up for crosstown Holy Cross or nearby independent Stonehill).

Zero chance. The days of D3 to D1 are pretty much over. Especially a kid who was playing in the NE10, regardless of the numbers he puts up.
